5:55 As he speaks, most Japanese study English for 12 years in school, but forget it because they have little opportunity to speak it. And the English they learn in Japanese schools is for exams, not practical English. Today, practicality is gradually being demanded, but some people resist speaking a foreign language because they have experienced being laughed at by other classmates when they practiced English pronunciation in Japanese schools. There are probably many Japanese who are traumatized by speaking a foreign language for at least some reason. I also use a translator because I don't speak in English...

One thing that I do find interesting here is that if an American goes out and speaks someone else’s native language to them, it’s impressive and respectable, but when someone speaks English to an American, it isn’t seen as too impressive or anything. It’s just such an odd double standard that I wish we could change.
@princessleira2663Ай бұрын
No hate to Americans but we are unfortunately known for being kind of lazy when it comes to language learning because the majority of Americans don't bother learning another language, with the mindset that English will suffice. Statistics say that only 20% of Americans can speak more than one language. It's sad, but it makes it understandable as to why foreigners from other countries are so taken aback when an American can fluently speak their language. Another thing is that America is so so diverse, if for example, someone who was Japanese spoke fluent English (at least within the United States) to any native English speaker, it would honestly be weird if the native English speaker reacted in a way where they were completely shocked that the Japanese person knew English so well. In my opinion, that would almost be disrespectful, like the English speaker would be implying that they didn't know that someone from another country who moved to the U.S. could possibly learn the English language so well. And no doubt the native Japanese speaker had to put in WORK to learn English, but at least in the case of them interacting with others within the United States, how is anyone supposed to know their background with learning the language unless they specifically shared their story? For all we know that person could have been born and raised in the U.S., because again, the country is super diverse. So I think that's why there is that double standard.
@eggytricky29 күн бұрын
i mean whenever you show off your english to non natives they're easily impressed so there's that lol

Generally, I think this is true but I've been impressed by non-native English speakers before. An old coworker of mine was Korean and I assumed he was Korean-American because his accent was flawless. He'd only been in the country for six months and had no prior English lessons. I had a similar reaction to the people in this video, I was so taken aback.
@zir45620 күн бұрын
I think It also depend on where they speak the language, people might not react so much if someone speaking English in USA but for example, american see japanese able to speak fluent English in Japan, it would be impressive Theres also the fact that English is International Language so American might not react that much Also American learning Japanese, Korean or Chinese need far more effort and reason, it didn't even need to be American, learning these complex language just that impressive

As a native mandarin speaker with my skills slowly deteriorating, this is strangely motivating for me to try to speaking it to people outside of my family. Your chinese is insanely good with little to no accent, If I met you in in game I also wouldn't believe you are American too haha. Hell, I think my chinese sound more accented than yours with the few years of being in english speaking environments. How do you find people who speaks chinese in vrchat? Through japanese servers? As _just_ a bilingual, I already sometimes have trouble forming full sentences without using words from the other language by accident. It's insane that you are managing five. These videos are a delight to watch, never stop! I love wholesome "language trolling" videos and never knew it could be done in vrchat. Being the translator in a conversation would never not be cool.

1:34 It's very common for different languages to have what's called a "tone average" where people that speak that language may have a higher voice or lower voice depending on what language they're speaking. It's a larynx and vocal chord thing like how Japanese calls for a shortened and more constricted vocal tone to sound correct to most people. While english is a way more relaxed tone and can be spoken a lot with less strain on the vocal chords. Some people may not notice this but it's a genuine thing.
