I'm Malaysian and if I hear Indonesians speak to each other really fast, I only probably understand like 50-60%, the rest would just be guesswork depending on context

I was in Singapore 🇸🇬 early this year, afyer my travel to The Philippines 🇵🇭., which was last year. Some Singaporean Malays look the same as some Indonesians and some Filipinos. From my observations, the difference between Indonesian and Malay is the slang. I will learn Indonesian after grasp intermediate level of Tagalog. Good 👍 video, Grace.

As an indonesian this video was super interesting! Im trying to learn malay as well since i lived in singapore. Its so similar to indo and yet so different For grace, i get what you mean that indo in jakarta sounds different from the indo youre used to learning in books. Informal indonesian is very different from formal or textbook indonesian. In jakarta, our informal indo has many words from hokkien and javanese. You can argue its a different language called betawi. But thats maybe not correct because betawi language has its own rules i believe (im not betawi. Cant 100% confirm). But other parts of indonesia will speak indo with their own flavor, mixed with their own local language. There are indeed families who speak bahasa indonesia at home only rather than a regional lang. My family is one of them. They tend to be concentrated around jakarta. You just have to find em. Best of luck for your indo journey. I feel like i should learn thai now in exchange! Uniting all the southeast asia via language learning 💪

Great video. I am learning both, but mainly Indonesian too. You can get by using Indonesian in Malaysia but I think to be able to claim speaking malay, one has to learn the malay vocabulary. Is not as similar to Indonesian as people think, I believe. I found great value in the channel of Tina Amir. She has hundreds of amazing videos that cover literally everything one needs in Malay.
