Many people comment Indonesian sounds like Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Russian.. it's because our languages are pronounced phonetically syllable by syllable to [a i u e o], [ra ri ru re ro], [sa si su se so] etc. and also spelt phonetically to Latin Alphabet.

As someone who speaks European languages, I find the Austronesian languages of maritime Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines) to have a less harsh sound than the more interior Southeast Asian countries (Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and to a lesser extent Laos and Myanmar). I think it has to do a lot with how the languages share more familiar sounds to European-language ears. Vietnamese, Thai and Cambodian, for example, sound more pitchy with the tones.

In Indonesia, cell phone = telepon seluler, shortened as "ponsel". It's usually used in formal context, like in news, book, etc., but in daily basis, we call it "hape" (shortened from handphone and pronounce it in Indonesian way)

As an Indonesian, I was told by my nanny that eating spicy food helps me pronounce RRRRRRRRRR~ clearly. F is not existed in Javanese, Sundanese, and many local languages. So f is changed into p. When Thais, Malaysian and Singaporeans, took "card" from English, Indonesians took it from Dutch "kaartje". No, Javanese is still able to pronounce "F". Traditionally they have "Fa" and "Va" on their writing system. You can check Hanacaraka, there's "aksara rekan" on it. Also Javanese writing system is still implemented for educational & religious reasons. Hindus and Buddhist Temple (Vihara) are still implementing the Javanese writing system. And they actually can pronounce "F" and "V" clearly. If it's not exist why they put it on their writing system tho??🤣 As Javanese I never heard any Javanese said "Pu Yung Hai" instead "Fu Yung Hai", neither "ka-ep-chi" instead "KFC".

@@steinlfromthebronx7372 Actually those rekan in modern Javanese script are used for writing Arabic loanword that have “f”, “z”, and “sy” sounds. The one for writing Buddhist and Hindu texts are Kawi script, or old Javanese script, which have more letters compared to modern ones. Why i said different? Cuz rekans are just usual Javanese letters but they added “cecak telu” on it, while Kawi have their own letters for those Sanskrit loanword sounds

Not even the old old old elderly Javanese. But based on my experience, sometimes elderly Javanese love to replace "z" become "j". For example Ajis instead "Aziz", Ajan instead "Adzan", Rijal instead "Rizal". In Manado kids were feed spicy food so they'll be able to pronounce hard R, if you can't pronounce it, some people will assume that you're a "bad manadonese"(in a joking manner) bc Manadonese is known for having a thick tongue for spicy food. The mention of Indonesian spelling is influenced by the Dutch, because Indonesia used to be called the Dutch East Indies, using the Van Ophuijsen spelling, the pronunciation of the Indonesian alphabet with the Dutch is only different in C, G, J, Q, X, Y and the rest are all the same, until now the mention is still ongoing. Just a disclaimer: Vietnam also adopted lots of French loanwards, an Italic/Romance/Latin language as opposed to English, a Germanic language, so that's why "Ice Cream" is "kem" or "cà rem" from French "crème (glacée)" which essentially is cream in English but the difference is that in French, it's pronounced differently, resulting in Vietnamese "kem" and no "r" bc French's "r" is perceived differently. Next to French loanwards, Vietnamese (even though it's a southeast asian country as well) has around 70%+ chinese loanwards that are sometimes so extremely diluted, that not even Viets/Chinese would be able to say "Hey, that's a Chinese-origin word!". But these phenomena happened to all languages, just with different other languages lmao.

Language is always bound to people and to an extend, their geographies if it happens naturally (today we obviously have more "unnatural" opportunities to go to places further away) but even then, languages people bring with them impacts other ones and is being impacted

Vietnamese words are really close to Chinese, especially the cell phone one which is called Dianhua (电话). Cellphone in Thai is fully called โทรศัพท์มือถือ or simplifiedly มือถือ or โทรศัพท์, but โทรศัพท์ is more broad since it is able to mean telephone too.

Singaporean here. Our official national language is Malay (since it was originally our native language which is why our drill commands are still in Malay) but we adopted English as our mainly spoken national language. Plus we have 4 official languages: Malay, Mandarin, Tamil and English. Haha. So despite speaking in English, our pronunciations, intonations as well as sentence structures are a mixture of the different languages. Thus we call it Singlish. Some people may view it as 'broken English' though but its just our way of communicating amongst ourselves in an informal way.

Malay is still our national language lol and that's why, as you explained, our military commands are in Malay, but also the reason why our national anthem is in Malay. however, English is our official and most spoken language, mainly because the government wanted a way to unite Singaporeans, way back when we were a newly independent country. i think the concept is similar to how in China, every city has their own dialect, but they all speak Mandarin, or 普通语, as they call it lol

Some people are commenting that the Vietnamese girl isn't pronouncing the words with a Vietnamese accent she's translating instead... but that's because in Vietnamese it's so easy to make new words. Simple words in Vietnamese are one syllable and complex words in Vietnamese are just compound words. German is more famous for using this same trick (with a lot more syllables lol): vacuum in German is "dust suck thing" while vacuum in Vietnamese is "machine suck dust." So when a new thing comes to Vietnam they can very quickly have a universally understood Vietnamese word for it. Really, it's so much easier to just combine simple words in a new way than it is for everyone to learn the foreign word. That said, Vietnamese doesn't always do this (they have a ton of Chinese loan words and also some French loan words) so there is a mix of strategies and younger Vietnamese will commonly use the English word for new things. But in general yes, the Vietnamese language does have more of its own words for things that other languages wouldn't bother with.

In Thai, ไอศกรีม(ice-cream) is very formal. Mostly we say ไอติม (i-tim). Also อินสตาแกรม(Instagram) is very formal too (Mostly used in news). We call it ไอจี(i-g) instead. We can pronounce many foreign word in Thai because Thai language has many sound and vowels, but we usually abbreviate it to make it easy to speak such as Facebook -> Face, ice-cream -> i-tim.

The mention of Indonesian spelling is influenced by the Dutch, because Indonesia used to be called the Dutch East Indies, using the Van Ophuijsen spelling, the pronunciation of the Indonesian alphabet with the Dutch is only different in C, G, J, Q, X, Y and the rest are all the same, until now the mention is still ongoing. If we're talking about Indonesian's accent, well it's bit confusing since Indonesia consist of thousand islands 34 provinces and each province they have their own mother languages, accents, cultures, tribes then those cultures and languages are supported our National Language, Bahasa Indonesia. Well, in Thai, cell phone(American) or mobile phone (British) is the subset of telephone. Cell phone in Thai is called mhue-thue which literally means hand-hold because we use our hand to held it to go anywhere. The word ‘mhue-thue’ is much more suitable for this context rather than ‘tho-ra-sab’ (telephone) that means all kind of phone (including landlines)

Interesting thing to note - the Vietnamese word for cell phone is 'Điện Thoại' has the same Chinese origins of the word 电话 (diàn huà), 電話 (でんわ denwa [Japanese]/전화 jeonhwa [Korean]) which are all use to mean 'phone' in those languages! (It is also written in chứ nôm, the old vietnamese writing system for chinese characters adopted into the vietnamese language, as 電話 (điện thoại) which makes it all the more apparent!)

It was interesting to hear the different pronunciations. Many were pretty close to the American versions, but this makes sense because these a mostly brand names. Vietnam had the most variation. From what I've seen in World Friend's other videos, China (not in this group) seems to have similar domestic words that are not a hybrid of English. I think that you should add China and Korea to this group for future videos, for the diversity, and even more fun.

But I've been watching the World Friends channel for a while now, and my recommendation was actually to them. Jane from China, Heejae (Hyejin?) from Korea, and Kotoha from Japan are regularly featured in their videos. Adding them to the topic discussion (with this group) would show up interesting similarities and differences in pronunciation.
