It is a little hard to follow when you are absolutely new and do not know at least some of Blender. However, you can be patient and pause and rewind to finally get something from it. Which is kind of a pain in the tail as well. However, if you really want to learn. You will deal with it and learn. I am surprised how much i have learned the past week. I used to mess with blender over 8 years ago. And was doing ok. Modeled a creature i drew on a napkin. Then started drifting away from it. And now here i am again. Using the newest version of blender. Modeling small stuff to learn again. Even used it to create a device for a 3d printer for a knitting machine. It's amazing how good blender has become. I just wished i had stuck with it until now. Because by now i would be making some amazing stuff at this stage.

I had a problem where the Bevel modifier wasn't working, after a lot of research I found out that it was because there are double vertices from canceling an extrude with right click and not pressing ctrl + z afterward. Just click the object(s) that aren't being modified, press m, then merge by distance. You should get a little message saying x vertices removed :) Hope this helps someone!
@chemicalderrick
@chemicalderrick 3 жыл бұрын
Very good advice. In fact, I made a habit of doing that periodically while working on anything. Periodically select all vertices and merge by distance. It'll prevent headaches and, in larger projects, an absurd amount of unneeded geometry.

I'm having a problem with extrude. When I press alt e, it only lets me extrude in the menu and it doesn't let me select like you did. Can someone help me?

Be sure you're in Edit mode, select some faces, then press Alt+E and you should get an 'Extrude' popup menu - select 'Extrude faces along normals' in this popup menu. Now you can extrude the faces how you'd like by moving your mouse around, then click to finalize their position. If that doesn't work and you are using a keyboard where 'Alt' is part of a dual-function key then check your keyboard settings.

I had a problem with the bevel modifier not working. I solved it by using "merge by distance" at .00000001 in edit mode. although I would like an explanation as to why I have to do that in the first place

It's probably that you have few vertices too close. You can disable "clamp overlap" in the bevel modifier settings (geometry section) , set desired bevel amount and see if it breaks somewhere

Great tutorial, and great style. Peripheral question : If I'd like to animate the the portal waves (the wood rings displace texture) like if the waves were coming from the center, what would be the best way to do it ? I tried to play with the empty (Pos, Rot, Scale) but nothing seems to get me to that effect. I looked for a "phase" option in the wood ring texture, but there was none. There must another way to achieve this...

I would search for this in the texture settings as well, but I would have to check

Great tutorial! One tiny thing that puzzled me: you later apparently use snapping a lot to move the floor plates around and such, but I never see it actually being enabled (i.e., the magnet symbol at the top stays greyed out). How did that work?
