We have a similar system in Morgantown, WV, USA, that connects various parts of the campus of West Virginia University in very hilly & cramped terrain. It has actually been expanded since I went to school there in 1980 - 83. The campus, & town, wholly rely on it. It's a bit more sophisticated, with solid concrete guideways & rubber tired vehicles, which are 3rd rail electric powered. It was a Federal demonstration project in the 1970's, is still funded by the Fed's (mostly). The cars run on set schedules at peak times during the weekdays & "on demand" at off peak times. When I was there, it was a linear system w/5 stations, I believe it was expanded to 7, both branches off the main line.

There are two loops: between the lower station and the intermediate station, and between the intermediate station and the upper station. Cabins switch cable at the intermediate station. The system could work with 4 cabins in theory (2 in lower loop and 2 in upper loop) but it was limited to 3.

C'est dommage que le truc n'existe plus. Assez rare comme technologie... Donc c'etait automatique et sans chauffeurs? Est-ce que la station du milieu se trouve exactement au centre de la ligne pour equilibrer les cabines et donc elles arrivent au centre au meme temps? Le changement des cables et la fonction des motours se passe automatiquement aussi? Quelle etait la raison le construire? On dirait tres cher pour une ville pas assez grande que ca non?

Oui c'était entièrement automatique. La station n'était pas au milieu, mais au 1er tiers. Les câbles sont indépendants entre la partie inférieure et supérieure. Le changement de câble se fait à la station intermédiaire. Le système pouvait même fonctionner avec 3 cabines (il y a un évitement sur le 2eme tronçon). Sinon l'ensemble reprenait le tracé d'un ancien train à crémaillère, peut-être surdimensionné pour une ville comme Laon, mais tellement plus pratique et rapide que les navettes de bus qui l'ont remplacé...

I confess to some suspicion about that figure of 19 million Euros for maintenance. The line was only 1.5 km long, just about one mile. The cost to construct such a system from scratch would be about that much, perhaps somewhat less. The video doesn't seem to show a ramshackle, failing system. Why was the projected maintenance cost so high? I understand this system was fully automated and did not require a driver. Did the bus driver union have anything to do with closing it?

Maintenance may have meant a rebuilt. People movers are notorious for being bespoke and hence getting replacement parts 20 years down the track can be difficult.

@@lindsaydonovan6241 "Bespoke" means they weren't off the shelf in the first place. And, very candidly, I doubt that cables and pulleys and rails are truly unique. And there's no indication at all that the pylons and stations needed replacement. Maybe the traction system was worn out. That's still not a total system replacement. No, there's something wrong here. Perhaps it should not have been built in the first place. But that doesn't bear on the question of whether the marginal expense of keeping it going, once built and operating, is or is not worth while.

Secondly, why does a town the size of Laon need mass transit system, after reading a little more I found out it doesn't and it's closed - Good, remove the ugly raised track system and voila a picturesque French town restored - What was the town council thinking back in the 80s, Can't help thinking of the Springfield Monorail.
