Pomegranate Health Benefits Are INSANE | Benefits of Pomegranate Juice
The pomegranate is a superfood with insane health benefits. The pomegranate is a fleshy berry and a great source of fiber, Vitamin C & K, iron, and potassium. They are also rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Many studies in humans indicate that pomegranates are an excellent defense against several diseases. They also contain the precursor to a powerful “anti-aging” molecule called Urolithin A.

The most significant source of its antioxidative properties is a chemical called punicalagin - a member of the family of ellagitannins found in the EDIBLE portion of the fruit. When we eat a pomegranate, our gut bacteria convert ellagitannins into Urolithin A.
To understand why Urolithin A slows down the aging process, we need to look at how our muscles age. 90% of our energy stems from microscopic structures in our cells called mitochondria. The cells in your body contain billions of tiny mitochondria. You can think of them as mini-batteries. Our bodies need to repair and sometimes replace defective, damaged, and old mitochondria for our body to work well. When mitochondria are damaged or defective, they self-destruct through a process called mitophagy, and once this happens, your cells make brand new mitochondria. During this process, dysfunctional and toxic elements in our cells are recycled or eliminated.
When we are younger, the mitophagy process happens more often. But when the process of mitophagy slows down, toxins may not be recycled or removed fast enough; this makes our body’s cells age faster, including muscle. Studies on humans and animals reveal that in the elderly, walking slower and poor muscle strength is associated with poor mitochondrial function. Improving mitophagy in older people has been shown to slow muscle strength decline from aging.
Maintaining a regular exercise regimen triggers the production of new mitochondria and boosts energy in our skeletal muscle cells when we age. A study found that Urolithin A promoted mitophagy, produced more mitochondria, and helped improve mitochondrial function in elderly individuals. These effects of Urolithin A mimicked how a regular exercise regimen benefits our muscles and helps us retain energy even when we are older.
Additionally, several rat and animal studies show that Urolithin A increased endurance levels in young and old rats by improving muscle health.
So what does that mean that Urolithin A and exercise combined have an even greater effect? Probably, but this is still an unknown. The effect of Urolithin A on humans is underway, and early results look promising.
Our gut is a collection of digestive organs that includes the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, or colon. There are a hundred trillion bacteria in our digestive systems. Having a diverse range of good bacteria in our gut is extremely healthy, and they are collectively known as gut microbiome or gut flora. Our gut microbiome regulates our immunity, prevents inflammation, fights against diseases, produces important vitamins, helps our body absorb nutrients from our food, and creates and regulates essential hormones. Not only that, but good gut health also affects our sleep, memory, moods, and mental health.
When digested, pomegranates act as a prebiotic. After digesting a pomegranate, some breakdown products include gallic acid, ellagic acid, and glucose. Bacteria in the colon then convert that into something called Urolithin A. So these natural substances keep our gut microbiome healthy - similar to a prebiotic. Prebiotics are fiber-rich plant foods that promote the growth of good bacteria in our gut. Urolithin A promotes the growth of good bacteria like Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli while suppressing harmful bacteria like Clostridia.
However, there’s a catch.
Much of our gut microbiome composition is determined at birth. And many lifestyle factors like smoking, alcohol, a bad diet, and too much exposure to antibiotics can hurt our gut bacteria.
Suppose someone doesn’t have the right gut bacteria to make Urolithin A from ellagitannins. In that case, they cannot access the anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties of Urolithin A. More Urolithin A-related studies are underway to determine the benefits of ingesting Urolithin A directly so even people who cannot produce Urolithin A naturally can reap its benefits.

How much antibiotics exposure is too much ?? How would we know if we aren't able to metabolize the nutrients?

@@ThereseCatanzano going to answer as someone that has read a lot of these things. Juice usually is only the liquid of the veggie or the fruit. The fiber is where the majority of the nutrients are. Juice is good yes, but only if it’s natural and does not have it. So I’d go juice once in a while, pomegranates in yogurt, salads, deserts all the way.

@@twelvesmylimit speak to your doctor. There are probably conditions where seeds are an issue. But nevertheless most doctors will tell you veggies and fruits are good.

My grandma died when I was 14 years old, she was 80. I have never seen her sick. She had a very small yard - 60-90 square metres. In that yard she had a Pomegranate, apricot, plum peach and mulberry trees. It was always a great pleasure to visit her 😍

@@bighands69 I would personally take making it to 80 with no health issues over 90 but burdened with chronic illness the last decade or so of life. But I still disagree that dying at 80 is good genetics. It doesn't make sense, especially if the cause of death is cancer, heart attack, stroke or failure of any body system or organ. But hey, it's not worth arguing over.

I have a tree that is off the chain productive. I bought a citrus press from Israel and every year we juice about 8 gallons and freeze it drinking it all year. The tree itself is glorious with shiny leaves, bright Orange trumpet shaped blossoms and right before harvest it’s loaded with massive garnet colored globes. The tree requires virtually no care. Thank you for your work.

I've been in love with this fruit for decades... Can't live without it. Fascinated by everything, the taste, texture, color, ritual of opening it... And also, I've always been amazed by the inside architecture of this fruit. I think the perfection of its structure reflects well on what you say here. There's something very unique in this fruit. I love the ones with very sweet light pink seeds... OMG!.... POMEGRANATE FOREVER 🙏☝

You can do either, eating the seeds has more nutritional benefits apparently. I find them hard to eat sometimes, so I’m going to start making smoothies or something with them because I do want the extra benefits.

The fiber of a fruit is always good and spitting out the grainy aerials is a habit I once engaged in however, when I learned that the insoluble fiber benefited my gut microbial, which makes me healthier, I learned to love eating it.

Not sure if it's related, and it will only apply to women of menopause age - only this was my experience with pomegranate. After one month of everyday heavy bleeding - I began to feel dizzy and knew that I needed help with replenishing my blood count. I'm not a fan of iron pills and prefer to heal as naturally as I can so I wanted to consume foods that naturally build up blood. By sheer coincidence the local grocery store changed out their fresh orange juice with pomegranates. I remembered that this fruit was on the list and bought my first fresh pomegranate juice ever. Well it had miraculous effects. The bleeding stopped immediately and my energy restored within days. I'm not a big fan of the taste only a huge fan of the results. So if you are a woman in need of a blood booster and you might want to consider giving this miraculous fruit a try.

Am from Guwahati, Assam, India. By God's grace I am eating pomegranates daily and since the last week from morning to afternoon 12 pm , my breakfast includes only pomegranates - 400 grams and bananas - 100 grams and I have been feeling very sprightly and lively!!! Pomegranates are very easy to grow ...i know, cause daddy landscaped the house w/agriculture including pomegranates. Instead of blossoming red flowers, I’ve got large ruby pomegranate ornaments & hundreds of burgundy jujube fruits that landscapes the front of the house. They not only look nice, you get to eat them too!!

@@MultiSciGeek if you don’t have that excess kibbles, buy the cheapest food to compost, potatoes, carrots etc cut them so they are no bigger than 1”. make sure you soak beans rice pasta or cheap dog food high in corn [for NPK phosphorous]. If you can get fish head, frozen sardines, canned mackerel at dollar store. Make sure you throw that in first so night critters won’t dig up your compost, so pack the dirt tight when you bury it. Collect water run off when washing dishes to water the plant ...no, the soap will NOT kill the plant, but aid in plants growth. You will have fruit next year!!

@@MultiSciGeek here’s how to get plant to produce fruit. if plant is more than 4’ high, do underground composting about 1’ from stump & 2’ deep & on both sides of the plant. throw in about about 1lb of any old kibbles you collect; the more rotten the better, like bread, old milk, flour/grains, old herbs/spices/jello pack, fruit peels, egg shells, table scraps, etc.

Wow. Didn't know I was getting such a health benefit from eating pomegranate seeds. Wanted to add more colorful fruits and veggies to my diet two years ago so I added pomegranates. Fresh pomegranate is not always available. I found frozen pomegranate seeds in the frozen food section. Thanks for the video.

@@28fabrice - we are more subtropical here in the far north of New Zealand. My understanding is, l will have some fruit next year. So they will be two years old. But it will take up to five years to get a heavy crop. It is the start of spring here and the growth on my pomegranates is already massive.

In Asia Pomegranate is a daily consumption along with many nutrient base fruits that provides several health benefits. As kids we would pick all the exotic organic fruits from the trees. They were always organic and naturally juicy.

Even in south east asia like india and nepal . Everytime a girl gets pregnant they have to eat it and whenever someone is sick people visit with pomegranate .it gives huge amount of energy. Growing up i dint like it but its most expensive fruit here from decades.

So sad. You've eaten so much processed junk food that v you're body no longer can digest whole foods? You need to start slowly incorporating slow cooked vegetables like in soups and stews.. Don't eat cold uncooked fruits and vegetables until you build your stomach acid back to normal..

From experience. Most of the people who I know and have volunteered for at retirement and veterans homes is that the oldest, and most alert / active seniors between age 89 to 100. All had very little to no processed meats in their diets. The ones who were frail and not as old, had eaten more plants and processed foods where more overweight, and least mobile and didn't live till age 80.

Dr. Mike. I wish you would do a similar video on the health benefits of Mangosteen fruit and its husk. I've been taking it for many years and have found numerous health benefits, primarily with its anti-inflammatory effects. I was able to replace Naproxin with Mangosteen juice for severe lower back pain and a friend eliminated Celebrex with Mangosteen for his severe knee joint pain. I wish more people knew of this healthy alternative to medicine.

Hi Dr Hansen, great video on Pomegranates. I am a small mfg. We just developed a green coffee energy drink which has a large amount of pomegranate arils in addition to Green Coffee, cinnamon, green tea, concord grapes and some Tarragon. I have been drinking about 8 oz a day for 3 weeks now and I have noticed that in addition to having more energy that my brain functions are improved and my appetite has been reduced. I am not an expert like you, but I am excited to see the effects of this drink. I am guessing that the Pomegranate has a lot to do with it. Thanks Jeff Osterlund

I had high trigs for a few years. I didn't want to take a statin so I went to my local supplement store. They sold me cholesterol supplements and fiber which helped very little. I went back and bought pomegranate supplement and the trigs went down to the normal range.

We have pomegranate everyday as one of our 4 to 5 fruits first thing in the morning. Both my husband and me are fit at the age of 75 and 68 respectively. We believe pomegranate is the best among fruits in terms of healthy ness.

@@ramona7160 if you just suck the juice, you are increasing your sugar level. Juice of any fruit is not healthy as eating the fruit as whole. Try and chew the seeds slowly and you will get used to eating the fruit as whole. Hope this helps.

Before you cut it bang it with a rolling pin and put it in a large bowl the mess will be in the bowl and the seeds will fall out easy after you assault the pomegranate with a rolling pin

I moved to US in 1976 at that time I couldn’t find it in the grocery store while living in Pakistan we been using this fruit from childhood and a lot of other fruits and spices American were not aware of the benefits

Pomegranate is being mentioned in the holy Quran... i was coughing continuously for 6 days, on the 7th day when i was in Kl masjid india, i bought a freshly squeezed pomegranate juice and drank the whole bottle. Alhamdulillah my 6 days of coughing suddenly stopped. All praises be to Allah♥️

I grew up eating it straight out of our front yard garden. Not sure how the 1st seed got there as the shrub just grew out of nowhere. It was an acquired taste.

I noticed that every time I eat pomegranate with meal, my blood sugar turns out good, not high.

The food you eat could counter- act the sugar in the pot juice. If you are metabolic healthy your body may compensate by increasing insulin to offset the sugar. I'm a type 2 diabetic, any sugar, regardless of "healthy" or "unhealthy" designation casing my blood sugar to rise over 200 and stay higher in a higher range for multiple days. In other words, the sugar stays in my liver.

From what I understand, various raspberries, blackberries, and a few types of nuts also have Ellagic Acids in them as well. Good gut bacteria converts Ellagic Acids into Urolithin A. According to Wikipedia, yellow raspberries have the highest amounts of Ellagic Acids.

Agree. Too many people don't realize the benefits of whole foods as opposed to juices - which are loaded with sugar without the fiber. Few Doctors understand nutrition as Dr. Hansen does.

@@williamrussellmorley Eat the entire seed. If you don’t it’s essentially pomegranate juice with little to no fibre. It’s interesting to me that someone doesn’t know how to eat pomegranates-and I don’t mean that as an insult. Without actively seeking them out I’ve probably had 50 pomegranates in my life and don’t think of them as rare or exotic.

@@MultiSciGeek I read somewhere that the peel contains a lot of anti cancer nutrients. I've simmered it in some water and will strain it then freeze into ice cubes to be taken in say a smoothy or freshly squeezed lemon drink . Since I'm new to this I will only have a cube at a time and be cautious. 🙏

As expensive as they are. We were blessed to have a tree/bush producing about 500 in one year. Ignorance keep us from eating such nutrients, yes our parents didn't want to deal with the messiness. I tell my children just to wear a red t-shirt or a piece of clothing they don't care about. It that easy to give the freedom to eat such powerful nutrients.
