I’ve heard (but never seen) that for softer western pines they make a skip tooth chain so the saw can get rid of the chips easier . Any of you pro cutters heard or seen this. Sure is beautiful rugged country compared to Appleton.👍👌🇺🇸💪
@brucearney95362 жыл бұрын
You are correct , skip tooth on long bars allow for better chip flow .
@InTheWoodyard2 жыл бұрын
Ken has tried skip tooth and was not impressed. I have not. We do not use extremely long bars, just 24" they will cut down almost all trees here and retain chain speed, it gives you a 48" cut.
@InTheWoodyard2 жыл бұрын
Long bars.
@nickbanks28732 жыл бұрын
I am no pro cutter but have ran alot of saw on wildland fires and I only used skip tooth chain it keeps the chain speed up and my shortest bar was 28 inches and up to 32 inches I still cut firewood in the west and still use the same type of chain and bar sizes but some of the lodgepole pine i cut is over 100 feet tall and 30-40 inches at the base and the juniper is alot shorter but is wide at the base as well
@thefirewooddoctor2 жыл бұрын
@@nickbanks2873, once you get to the 28in wood in a single cut then the skip-tooth pulls dead even for cutting speed, depending on species. After that skip-tooth starts to become faster and faster as the logs get bigger.

The reason we don't burn pine here on the east coast is ours has 50x the resin and sap. You can't lean against a pine tree without feeling like you've encountered a 3M adhesive sales rep. I'm no arborist, but there must be a difference I guess.
@InTheWoodyard2 жыл бұрын
Most pine has a lot of sap/resin, it burns great.
@wolley20122 жыл бұрын
Sap=BTU. Burning conifers is fine. It has to be dry like anything else.
@JesseLJohnson2 жыл бұрын
It burns fine if its good and seasoned just it burns fast and sparks a lot. I wouldn't use it don't know anybody who does but there must be somebody. Fine for outdoor campfire use I wouldn't use it for anything else but out west that is probably about all they have and they have different species that I have heard is comparable to hardwoods we burn but I have no idea never had any to compare. Sure I have had some pine before since we used to burn a lot of slab from the Amish saw mills. Its supposed to all be hardwood but there could have been some pine that got mixed in over the years. I haven't bought any of that in 20 years or so though. I did buy a couple face cords from a neighbor that sells wood a couple years ago that was really seasoned just to use for kindling and I have bought pallets of slabs and scraps a couple times I had to cut myself but that was def all hardwood from local sawmills. Most of that was cherry and oak.

@@InTheWoodyard 50,000 acres in northern New Mexico? That is massive! I live here in nm. Been swinging a saw since I was 14. Now 56. These mountains fed me for many years. Logging, comercial firewood blocks. Never seen a ranch that large with pp in the north. Gotta be Valle Vidal or Indian land right?
