What would be a decent alternative to Biohome Ultimate? That is available in Australia? As in Australia it's wildly expensive unfortunately. I have seen a comment where you have recommended Aqua One before? Was that their standard ceramic noodles or the premium white sintered glass noodles? Thanks :)

@@AlishaField1609 As fr as ceramic noodles go the Aqua One noodles tend to be good but the nearest alternative to any form of Biohome would be the Eheim Substrat Pro.

@@pondguru Thank you for the recommendation, I wish Biohome was cheaper over here in Australia, but $41 for only 1kg is too pricey for me, and many others. Otherwise I would fill all 4 trays in my canister with it. With the Aqua One bio noodles however, would you recommend the ceramic ones or the white sintered glass ones? Aqua One have two options and I would really love your feedback on what you would go with, out of those two options. Yes, the Italian pumps used to be worse than cheap Chinese pumps many years ago and while they always looked good the quality was lacking. Now they're great. The small oxy-water pump I have on my website also come from Italy.

I’ve got this filter and it clogs quite easily. I’m using the coarse pad it came with and a medium bumpy pad and pre filter on the intake. Media in mesh bags similar to how you set it up, you’ll find you have to swap out that fine pad so frequently other than that it’s a good filter highly recommend.

I had the same problem with clogging. I ended up putting some of them plastic bio balls on the bottom of the basket to lift the sponge off the bottom. It helped to not clog so fast.

Pondguru, the thing is that if you get it stuffed with media in that extent, it clogs, and it causes an overflow, you cannot get that tray as crammed as you recommend.

Yes, because the bypass is designed in to continue to provide Water Circulation and Oxygenation when the Filter Media needs cleaning. That's why Seachem only supplies a Sponge and a Mesh Bag of Matrix.

I have one of these and love it! I have it set up more towards your tradional way. I rarely have to clean it. I also use an undergravel filter into a fluval canister filter. The tank is 20 gal US. Plants doing great! Guppies flourishing!

the size of the drip media tray is laughable, finally ditched mine after 2 years, half that filter is a giant chemical section, i use just the 1 part foam, not the 50/polish/50 foam pad . then fill the chemical section with a real porouse media, then u can put ur chemical filtration in the drip spot instead imo

Great filter, I've got the 35 on a 70l small community tank. The main star of said tank being a male Halfmoon Betta. I have found that even on its lowest setting, this does still push him around a bit too much when he comes to the surface. I've just orderd a custom baffle from etsy which I'm hoping will solve that. Another problem I did find is that the surface skimmer on this absolute shredded any floating plants up. I want red root floaters but I simply can't with this. I'm thinking I might take it all apart and add some filter floss on the intakes to see if that will solve that issue. I'm terms of actually being a filter however, this is awesome! It keeps the tank clear, it's reliable and quiet also.

Problem with all the Tidal series filters is the amount of filter bypass they have even when the filter media is really clean and the water is flowing through it good let alone when the filter media starts getting dirty.

I do like this filter I use it on my 70 litre QT tank or at the min a fry tank with a sponge covering the inlet to stop lil un getting sucked in. I have it setup the same apart from i'm not using the gravel and the Maxi just the standard biohome ultimate. It's been working a treat although i agree recommended tank size is mental, great for smaller tanks though

It seems to small for the tank it says it can operate on , I don't like the lack of circulation with HOB filters , the inlet is close to the outlet aswell that doesn't seem ideal but iv only rum cannisters and sumps they allow for better circulation and and flow in a tank , these best suited to small fish or others that don't like high flow , great update though keep the vids coming bud 👍

It will "fit" but it entirely depends on how heavily stocked your tank is or what you are housing in it. I have had this Tidal 55 for almost a year now. It worked amazing on my 20 gallon long!!! I had to "uptank" my fat-boy, blackmoor goldfish 'Moorley' to a 40 gal breeder (36" x 18" x 16") in April and I found that I definitely need to "upfilter" for him as well. Debating on going for the 75 or just keeping this one going and add a canister for main filtration. I do think the 75 would work perfect though since I only have him in the tank with a bunch of plants.

Just occurred to me an ideia: to connect a small hose to the end of the telescopic intake of the Tidal 55 and use it to siphon the substrate on site... Would it be feasible? Probably the internal walls of the hose will cover the intake grooves, not allowing water circulation. Does the intake have grooves on the bottom of the tube? If not, I think the only possibility will be to create a wider chamber around the intake connected to the hose... These are just a few ideas that, if they worked, would certainly make the job of siphoning much simpler for many aquarists.

Best Hang on the Back filters at the moment. Used a Fluval Hang on the back, but this was awful loud. Lot of vibration. The Tidal series is expensive, but has no alternative in my opinion.

There is no right or wrong answer to that question since every tank is different - just check it after 3-4 weeks and if it looks like it may go an extra 1-2 weeks next time just extend the time out after every inspection (and cleaning) until you hit the sweet spot for the tank and stock.

@@gk9417 That sounds like some decent filtration so best of luck with that. As long as you're not using 'prime' (which starves the bacteria) the whole system will be full of beneficial bacteria for great quality water.

@@gk9417 (my other channel) No worries - the choice of water conditioner makes a hell of a difference as to how much active bacteria is in the system. As long as you choose one which doesn't mess with the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate it's all good. API Stress Coat is as good as anything and I've not had any reports from people cycling with that one.

Got this filter on my 50 litre medium stock tropical tank with small fish that want low flow (Cory, neon, danio, rasbora). With coarse and medium sponges plus fine filter pad. Along with a good size bag of Eheim Substrat Pro (900g). Been super reliable, happy fish with controllable flow, just needs cleaning 2x a week to avoid bypass since fine pad gets mucky quick. However, it is very easy to clean-swap pads etc. Highly recommended for simple use, build quality, quietness, and reliability for smaller-low flow aquariums (high flow does bypass a lot). 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 But only if you don't mind the pretty frequent maintenance.

Having a sponge on the intake will work a lot better than the idea in your 110 video where you put a coarse pad in the gap the water goes down before going up through the media. Was good in theory but when I set it up, with the most coarse sponge I have ever had and only half the size of the gap, to minimise water flow disruption, about 1/4 of the water comes up and out the top without going through media. With the pad used in the 110 video and the full height like in the video too, a lot more of the water came out the top, as I tried that way first before changing it slightly. I have ordered some intake sponges so can take the sponge out of the gap :)

Great video mate. I live in Thailand and I hope to get a 7 foot tank x 3 foot! To keep south and central American cichlids in it. Do you think I could use those tidal filters hang on the back instead of the canister filters? The tidal hang on the back ones seem a lot more easy to maintain plus I have a bad back. I know I will probably need 3 or 4 of them because of the size of the tank. Any advice would be great. Thank you.

Most of the filters in this series belong to people who end me them to upgrade so they generally aren't run in the videos.

Hello! Can i use a tidal 55 for a 15 gallon? Because the tidal 35 does not have much features or the intake pipe, so i really would prefer the 55, but Im afraid even at mininum how much the flow will be. So i will be keeping a pre filter sponge/ a guard for the intake pipe, keeping it at mininum flow. With those factors considered, do you think its safe for the 55 to be on a 15.7 gallon?

I'm assuming that is 15 US gallons? If so then that is only 57 litres so the Tidal 55 will be fine, even if you have quite a heavy stock. Just make sure you use a 'normal' water conditioner which doesn't mess with the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. I always recommend API Stress Coat since it doesn't starve the bacteria like seachem prime does.

This filter would not be good for a shrimp tank. You can put a foam over the bottom intake, but shrimp (especially neo caradina) would get sucked into skimmer for sure Still looks like a decent filter.

I set up a Tidal 75 for my parents' tank which has a significant cherry shrimp colony. To overcome the skimmer situation you've described I've put a fine layer of coarse foam covering the skimmer inlet (simply edged it on left and right slids with a tea spoon). Worked like a charm! Did not notice a difference in the flow and neither shrimps not endler fry were ever suked in. Hope this helps.

I don’t mind pulling it out every week and cleaning/replacing it as needed - keeps the foam/floss I use in the basket much cleaner, so the matrix/rings stay good and clean, as well. Great filters from my limited experience with them so far! HATED my AquaClears as far back as ‘89, been using BioWheels since they were introduced and have HATED this latest generation with a passion! Would rather run one of the Whispers or Aqueons than another new Emperor 😢 sad to see what they’ve become. They work very well as a mechanical media in a sump and will support aerobic bacteria as well as most ceramic rings. If you're looking to fill some part of a filter cheaply and don't expect a full cycle from filtration then they're fine.

@@sethat8e (my other account) The Substrat Pro from Eheim is close to the Biogravel and a bit larger so that's one I generally link to in the video descriptions and pinned comments as a good alternative. It's roughly the same price however. Cheap and effective isn't two things which really go together as it takes a certain amount of work to create a good media from scratch. However, if you employ a second filter with a really slow flow the water through that one will become deoxygenated very quickly and will enable any mediocre media to support anaerobic bacteria for nitrate removal. If you look at most 'nitrate filters' online they will contain plastic media which is the worst media you could possibly buy but because the water itself s deoxygenated the filters work. They work a hell of a lot better when the media is good though. I'm planning to make a video very soon about a hang on the back secondary filter which can be used to smash the nitrate and it is really inexpensive compared to normal 'nitrate filters'. It will be guaranteed to P off the manufacturers of expensive nitrate filters, lol

@@sethat8e It can be a decent media but lava rock is so variable that it can be anything from great to pretty much useless. If it's really well blown through with holes then it will be decent media when crushed. Anything is better than plastic media and most good lava rock / good quality pumice is better than crappy quality ceramic rings.

I'm not impressed with my Tidal 110 due to how most of the water bypasses the media, as others have mentioned. I just run it with a very low flow rate to minimize this bypass. Not sure why it gets such great reviews.

Unfortunately most of the Seachem products get great reviews online since most of their 'ambassadors' are paid to tell everyone they're great. The majority of their 'ambassadors' do 80% water changes every week which tells you that their filtration is mediocre and their chemicals are actively suppressing the natural bacterial processes in order to force the users to buy their 'solutions' to the problems (e.g. stability) which have been created by their 'treatments' - it's a very pharmaceutical business template which I won't be part of. I'm more interested in taking a holistic view and solving problems at the source - creating a system where costs and maintenance are minimal for the life of the tank. I just take everything as I see it for this series of videos and set the filters (sent by viewers) up as I would to make them more efficient compared to how they come from the manufacturer. What makes me different from most KZbin channels is that I've never accepted a penny from an aquatic company to make videos or promote a certain product, hence most aquatic companies hate me - there's nothing more dangerous than someone who won't be bribed, lol. The Tidal filters seemed to be made well enough but after seeing a few people talk about bypass it makes the optional foam on the intake even more important. Water doesn't need to all go over the media so I wouldn't worry too much if you're experiencing bypass - the bacteria living on (good) filter media will still actively consume the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in the water. Ideally all the water would flow over the media but as long as the filter is sensibly sized for the tank and it runs 24/7 it will be OK. If I showed you my deleted emails you'd be amazed at the amount of companies who want me to promote their products and pay me handsomely to do so. I can say with no fear of repercussion that I've turned down every single paid offer since I started making videos over 12 years ago. One company recently offered me $1200 dollars to feature and promote something I didn't agree with and would never genuinely use but I can guarantee that 99.9% of 'KZbinrs / influencers' would have taken the deal and bullshitted their way all the way to the bank......... The only advice I can give you is to only trust reviews from long term users of any product since the world is flooded with fake reviews - Amazon is a prime example where people are sent products to 'review' and they take a few photos of the packaging, bang out a generic fake review based on the information on the box then sell the product on ebay. I take great pride in my Amazon review profile but I turn down 99% of the products offered to me from sellers - most of them are either crap or I just wouldn't have a use for them. I've never sold anything that I've been sent to review but I have given everything away which I haven't found a long term use for. My Christmas give-aways last year on my Thousand Yard Stare channel cost me a fortune as I gave away about £3K of products to viewers, some of which I bought myself with my hard-earned cash. I'll do the same again this year. Sorry, I went on a rant there as I've just watched a video link sent me by a viewer which was from someone who would promote anything for money and it bugs the life out of me.

Yes, most definitely. Although people consider Prime to be Seachems flagship additive for aquariums I would say Flourish Excel is by far the best as it helps the bacteria as opposed to hindering it.

@@pondguru It's interesting you say that about prime. I've seen a lot of things lately that have made me raise an eyebrow about prime. There seems to be a lot that equipment manufacturers says that is a half truth at best. For example the 'false positive' on an ammonia kit after using prime. The more I research the cycle further, the more it seems to stand out. I'm very wary of these bacteria in a bottle at the moment.

Not that I can remember but it was a very long time ago when I filmed this. The seachem website doesn't say if it will work with only the skimmer but I'd guess that it won't.

So i got the 70 or 75 whatever it is. And i noticed this filter bypasses A LOT of the water and that the filter basket and the way the water enters the system is flawed. The water is forced up then has to do a U turn down and water leaks between that and the filter basket. The holes on the bottom of the basket are very restrictive and I have used a dremel to make everything on the bottom of the basket way bigger. Clean filter had about 40% or more bypass and after my mods to the bottom of basket a clean filter has less than 5% bypass. Need to put some sort of gasket where the water does a u turn from the pump and the basket to try and stop leakage. The filter is ok, but it still makes a noise that i dislike , other people have said it will go away once it gets gunked up. I honestly should have went with my gut and stuck with the Aquaclear. Lesson learned.

I was stuck deciding between the Tidal and the Fluval C series. Liked the idea of the Skimmer built in for the Tidal and Really liked the Filtration for the Fluval. I went with the Fluval C4 and been Loving it. Just fill the "Chemical media basket" with more Bio media. or fill half way in case you want to use Chemcial media you can place it on top. Purchased the Eheim Skimmer to make do.

Fishkeeping since the 90s had all kinds of hob filters and canisters but hate to tell ya but most tetra hob blow others out the water like for example the whisper 60 kills this tidal 55 hands down

Good one - whatever works for you is the best. There are so many fanboys claiming that their filter is the best but ultimately everyone is correct if the filter is creating a good water quality for the fish - there is definitely no 'best' filter.

I have a Tidal and it's a good hob BUT if you have live Bering fish, shrimp, or lots of plants especially ones that float this is not the hob you want!! Little babies get sucked up, plants get sucked into it. That makes it so loud

I've done this mod on a 75 and 55 and now a 35 and ran into some pretty major issues. Due to fitment issues with manufacturing tolerances and the fact it's made out of plastic some of these changes don't really work out. I found a solution on some of the issues and wanted to provide proper feedback with photos and other things to demonstrate the issues as well as potentially another solution method. I've been using these, aquaclear, and other HoBs with various success. I've been using the seachems for several years (different models) and can definitely provide some insight on how they "don't work" and what they do well. Is the email the best way?

Yeah its great that you "pimp / upgrade " the filter but until you actually test the filter or others you will soon realise that they clog easily. All well having new great media but pretty pointless if the filter does not work efficiently as it is meant to.

No worries, man - you're free to set up your filter however you want and this series of videos is just about explaining how the water flows through a filter and then offering a suggestion as to how it could be improved with better foam placement and more efficient filter media. Most of the filters are sent in by viewers so I don't run them. With regard to the filter in this video it's not ideal as far as mechanical filtration goes and with any filter the fine pad will ultimately be dictating how often the filter needs to be maintained.

I dont get the great reviews on this mine is a p.o.s it dosnt work the intake in the bottom dont work at all even when fully open trash and drebis goes in n back out hahaha even after cleaning it .Im going going back to the aquaclear .

You always recomend a water conditioner without a binder for ammonia,and nitrate as it disrupts the cycle. I am using API water conditioner that only claims to detox chlorine and chloramine. Is that an appropriate water cond. That wont harm my cycle?

@@FireGate_13 algaecide means it kills algea. Also no such thing as liquid carbon. Its Gluterhalderyde which is used for sterilising medical equipment and is carcinogenic.

I have one of these and I gotta be honest, I'm not really happy with it. I "pimped" it similarly to how you have here. Same foams, and ehiem substrat pro instead of biogravel which is essentially the same thing. The result is BYPASS! So much bypass happens with this filter. Unlike a canister which forces the water through the media, this thing has slits and grooves all over the place which give the water somewhere else to go other than through the media. Easily over 90% of the water flow misses the media with this filter, and just when you think its flowing right, leave it a few days and it will by bypassing in no time at all. And it not only bypasses your media, but your prefilter too! As soon as that thing starts to clog up (or even before) it will stop pulling water through it and pull all the water through the skimmer. Using the switchy thing to turn off the skimmer does nothing. It just lessens the flow to the skimmer but not enough to stop this happening. Its good in concept, but honestly I have found this filter near useless. I now have a canister for biomedia and just use the Tidal for some extra polishing and carbon. Which admittedly its quite useful for because I change the carbon more frequently than I do my canister so its handy having it separate. If this is to be your primary bio filter my recommendation is to look elsewhere.

Well that's what you get, and deserve, for not understanding these filter's Design Principles and simply abusing them. The bypass is designed in to continue *Circulation and Oxygenation of the Water* when the Media needs cleaning. The lower Wheel only adjusts the flow up the Tube. There is a fulltime inlet on the right side of the pump housing seldom shown in all these "instructional" videos. The upper Wheel controls the overall flow rate
