I don’t get the love affair with the fluval FX6. That’s all everyone in YT land uses. Rarely see any reviews on the eheim 2262. IMHO there’s nothing that touches it. No comparison. Been using them for 20 plus years. The best on the market.

A tip is to cut the foams just slightly larger than the diameter of the filter space because over time when you clean them out they will shrink a little and you don't want bypass at the sides.

The mech (rings) eheim have for their filters is awesome (any rings will do). When I do filter maintenance there is 10 times more muck trapped in the mech layer than in the sponges above it. It also redirects the water in every direction meaning that the flow into the next layer of media is evenly distributed. There is also the bank of biological bacteria that the rings provide which gives partial insurance if human error or misadventure ever compromise the health of the biological media during filter maintenance. Also, I'm a massive fan of the sub-filters eheim offer in some regions. I use one on my 2217 and have all of my mechanical media in it, freeing up the powered canister for biological media. When combined with a frequently cleaned pre-filter it reduces the filter maintenance many fold.
@OriginalMindTrick
@OriginalMindTrick 3 жыл бұрын
The black plastic ridged rings (Mech Pro) are fantastic as the first thing to collect particles in the water and you don't want to clean out the filter too often. HOWEVER, the rings will start to degrade after a few years and after a while, it's useless as the rings are broken down into smaller and smaller pieces.
@bull3eye890

@@OriginalMindTrick I’ve had mine a few years and they’re as good as new. They aren’t exposed to light of any sort and aren’t moving in the filter, they’ll be stable for years to come, plastic simply doesn’t degrade that quickly.

@@bull3eye890 Believe me it does, or at least it has done so in all canister filters we have run if you give it enough time (I'm a aquarium technician so I work on a lot of tanks), and you might still have a few years yet when they are intact. The ceramic rings don't break down however, or at least they haven't broken down after 10 years of use.

I made a booster filter with a 3.5 gallon bucket with a gamma seal lid, 1" uniseal bulkhead fittings and 1" PVC pipes, and Eheim 1" hoses. This bucket has only mechanical filters (coarse, medium fine) and it needs to be cleaned only 1 in 4 months. I don't crack the biological filter more than once per year.

The simplicity of this filter is what makes it great. The design can be repeated easily with a little effort. As big of a container(s) you wish to deal with, some fittings/ball or gate valves and a great DC pump plumbed to it would make it silent and powerful. The key would be to have it leak proof for peace of mind.

Great video, as always! I had a thought while watching... If that were mine, I would buy (or make a DIY version of) a pond pressure canister to use as a mechanical pre-filter for the Eheim. Tank water would flow into the pressure canister and its outlet would connect to the inlet of the Eheim. That way the Eheim could be used solely for bio-media. Mechanical filtration maintenance wouldn't even require the bio-media to be removed!

I have 2 Eheim Classic 2217 (600) (smaller versions of that) and on one at the bottom is a coarse blue sponge with a few litres of Eheim Subtrat Pro and in the other, no foam at all and a bag with another couple of litres of Substrat Pro. They've been running for 2 and a half years and the Substrat Pro isn't clogging with dirt at all. Bacteria secrete a slime layer around themselves and when people see brown on their media, they probably think it's just dirt but it's just as likely to be bacterial film.

Follow me on Odysee: odysee.com/$/invite/@PondGuru:0 Biohome, mesh bags etc.. www.filterpro.co.uk The FilterPro site has links to other distributors around the world (flags are links). Eheim 2260 / 1500XL (Amazon): geni.us/aXas Eheim 2260 / 1500XL Lattice Screen (Ebay): ebay.us/rmdYPS The filter seems very expensive at the time of writing this on Amazon UK but it may be cheaper in other countries - search for best prices online if you're in the UK. The 1500XL is a proper monster of a filter and it is no nonsense - a trip back to Eheim's roots and it is a world away from the wi-fi enabled, plastic media nonsense of the pro 5 range of filters. If you are looking for a filter which holds a nation of media and will live longer than a Greenland Shark then look no further as it's literally 2 x FX6 filters rolled into one. It will easily hold 11kg of media as shown in this video but if you go with one single media bag you can easily get 13kg-14kg into this filter. Eheim media bag (Amazon): geni.us/uytmR A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere. Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome ultimate does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios: (1 US Gallon = 3.8 litres) (1kg = 2.2 lbs) Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres You may be disagreeing with the above figures but remember that they are for a FULL CYCLE not half a job - achieving 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite is quite easy since aerobic bacteria grows freely on any surface but the anaerobic bacteria responsible for COMPLETING the cycle needs more a specialized habitat. Size a filter properly, set it up sensibly and you will have perfect water - it's that simple....and your filter won't be the dreaded 'Nitrate factory'.....you'll spend less money on treatments too......basically the filter is the foundation of a successful aquarium. This series of videos is all about trying to squeeze more efficiency out of internal and external aquarium filters which generally have a limited filtering capacity - If you have a filter you'd like me to feature in a video then please contact me on: sales@filterpro.co.uk 07772848730 (Richard) Anyone who sends a filter (UK only at present) will have it upgraded and returned to them for free and the only cost you will pay is how much it costs to ship it to me - I'm helping to boost your filter and the resulting videos will hopefully be useful to viewers all over the world so it's a win/win. Awesome review. I've gone to your website and selected the international stockist for Australia. I'm after the ultimate biohome, it says its all out of stock. Do you know when more will be available in the bulk bags? Cheers

Having WiFi is actually very useful for automation. So if you had a self sustainable system and for some reason you needed to control the filter, you could remotely access whatever parameters the application allows for that filter. Don't be scared of technology, yes it's true if left in the default setting, accessing the data on any IoT device is easy and a potential security risk, since it would be a rather easy access into your home network, as a filter company is highly unlikely to impliment IEEE security standards but that's like buying a home alarm and using the default password and expecting your system to be secure.

It's a gimmick that is pretty useless.
@Antonio-Montan
@Antonio-Montan 3 жыл бұрын
@@ManicMindTrick you might think it's a gimmick and you're entitled to your opinion however if you have the right type of fully automated system it's certainly not a gimmick. For instance, I use a dosing pump as part of an auto water changing system which has this feature and it enables me to alter the level of water I input or output from the system. Comes in handy when I've gone away for any long length of time, since I can also monitor my water levels. I don't know what the features on a filter would be but having the facility to turn your filter on or off or if there are other parameters you can change such as flow rate, might be useful for certain applications particularly on automated systems. You can also achieve a simple on/off and timing feature buying a WiFi enabled smart plug. I also use one of these for my lights, which again can be automated, so if you have too much algae growth for instance, you can monitor, change or switch things on/off.

I think I’ve watched all these pimp my filter videos and if you are correct which I think you are why do all these filter makers still sell them with what is technically the wrong information for setting them up and have you ever contacted any of them and told them their filter information is wrong and what sort of response did you get.

It's either the case of profit-maximizing by incorporating cheap media, making the customer buy replacement filter media (like Juwel with the fine pad on top), poor knowledge of how filtration works, or sometimes it's to delay times between cleaning.

The only one that is "better" costs like 1500 and is made by ADA. It's very similar to this filter but made out of stainless steel and has a quality Iwaki pump on top.

@ThousandYardStare 2 жыл бұрын
(my other channel) As there's an option to fit another pump to the 1500 XL and it holds a nation of media that is easily the most powerful both from a flow and media capacity point of view.

With a normal stock, yes. However, if the stock is heavy you'd be much better off with a proper sump.

You will be overdoing for 200 litres. However you can use a Double tap connector to regulate the flow. Take this only as my suggestion and go ahead which you feel is appropriate.

FX6 is poor by comparison it's like comparing Kia to Rolls Royce. I have both but the FX6 is a polishing filter and needs way too much maintenance. The motor gets clogged way too easy and it holds a pitiful amount of media for it's size. The only good thing it does do is purge itself, but it only needs to do that cause the flow gets reduced from sponges clogging. It's not a good long term solo filter. Even a DIY 5ltr bottle moving bed does more biological filtration than an FX6.

Yeah pretty much. And it's the best filter I've tried and I have tried a lot of them working as an aquarium technician. You just want something that does what the hell it is supposed to and just keeps on doing it. As long as you keep the o-ring lubed up from time to time you won't have a problem. The pump is super reliable.

Seems plausible to build one from scratch because the concept of it seems simple enough. Knowing that it's Eheim, must've cost a fortune for something with a simple design.
