Pool School

In this video we look at three examples of pool matches played under World rules. Each demonstration talks through different approaches to winning a game of pool. The first example looks at clearing the table in one visit. The second example looks at how to play cautiously against an overly aggressive player and the final example discusses tactics between two cautious players.
There is no right and wrong way to play a game of pool so everything discussed here is purely my opinion and how I would play the shots. I'm sure lots of people would play many of the shots differently.
The shots are carried out on a 7ft UK 8 ball table.

You want to keep as many balls on the table as possible. Wow man, that's blown my mind! I'm a fairly good potter and I play snooker mostly, when I play pool I just go for everything, if it goes then I'll have a go. I'm not like that with snooker but I've learnt (& always learning) a bit about tactics and they make sense and win you games. I'm really looking forward to playing against someone again after watching this. Thanks mate a really well made video.

Yep another great video. Very realistic and portrays how the majority (70-85%) of pub team pool players games can end up panning out. Once you get to the 1st/Premier divisions of pub leagues it really gets much more tactical and is more like a game of chess. One bad safety shot and it’s generally game over because the top 15% can find both good cue ball position and have mastered their cueing action for potting.

Cheers, I'm glad you found it useful. I'm no pro, just a decent local league player, and talking through (in my head obviously!) exactly what I'm trying to do, am I going for a clearance, am I playing safe, can my opponent finish, where will the cue ball end up, is this shot too risky, what happens if I miss...etc! has massively improved my game (as well as lots of practice of course!)

While a good video describing how to play against someone with the mindset he described of just being an average level Potter who doesn't think ahead, if you were playing a pro they, as the yellow player would have gone for a clearance alot earlier. Not necessarily because they're just that good and don't need or want to have the easiest possible clearance, but rather because if the red player was a pro, you wouldn't want them to have 4/5 goes at a "miracle double", as the pros might just get them, at least alot more of them than average players.

Really interesting how the English game is different. I’m an advanced level league player in Canada. I’m also an intermediate snooker player. A lot of how you’re playing 8 ball here is specific to a snooker style table with the rounded pockets. The tables we play 8 ball on have squared off pockets you can run balls down the rails no problem. Also your pocket blocking balls are irrelevant on our tables. We can just sink both balls and continue. It’s funny how a few subtle differences can change the whole approach.

Exactly what I was thinking. Plus in the UK ‘Blackball Rules’ are becoming more popular which allows you to pot your opponents balls alongside your own object balls in the same shot. Therefore adding another dimension to the game. This guy really needs to address that and also needs to pay attention to his subscribers comments and questions.

Couple of weeks ago, in a knockout match, I was in a doubles match teaming with my best friend and we was against the aggressive type of players.... Not caring for position n going for pots all the time whereas me n my friend are more controlled and actually think bout our shots.... Anyway they storm ahead but we kept calm and just forced them into fouls (we even fouled once cuz my friend feathered the cue ball and it didn't touch the object ball but we got away with it), eventually we pounced on a crucial mistake and took the win, classic case of being behind on the table but we never felt we was behind :)

Thanks for taking the time to share your videos. I would say that any half decent player could have and would have taken on some of the shots you decided to play safe on and most pub players definitely would have. Personally, I think this video over did the strategy aspect of the game for the average pub player, where most of us play, but probably did so on purpose to reinforce the point he is trying to make. I certainly certainly took something away from this video as I am too aggressive so I think I'll incorporate some parts of this video into my game. If I played someone, who played like this, it would drive me mad and I'd probably wrap my cue around his 🤕

Thanks. Exactly, things are obviously exaggerated to try and demonstrate a point, it's difficult to play as a player you're not! Everyone player is different as is every game and situation, these are just intended as some ideas to try depending on what you're faced with.

Yeh i would agree that unless your good enough and confident enough you can finish up giveing the fact you had 5 or 6 yellows left still when they are in their last ball i would normally go ahead and pot what i can to get the game closer naturally. But i can see the strategy to an extent but i think this only applies if you are good enough to make thr clearance. I would say most average or average to good players would rather try and pot their balls rather than risk the other player not being able to pot their remaining 1 or 2 balls so dont bother potting anything of your own. If you later miss one of the balls in the clearing up your still in the same situation and will still lose.

It would be great if you could do a video explaining some of the major pool rule sets for 8-ball pool. It seems everyone I play with has their own interpretation so it would be nice to understand the main ones and their differences so when playing with friends and family we can choose a rule-set that suits us. I've heard rules referred to as English rules, world rules and international rules but it's not also easy for a beginner like myself to understand the subtle differences. An explainer on this would be great if you needed ideas for more videos.

6:28 opportunity there to play a simple but really nasty snooker and most likely get yourself an extra visit, though I suppose there's a risk there cause that type of player would most likely hit the cue ball extremely hard to try to get out of that shot and balls would by flying everywhere and some of your balls might be left in bad positions afterwards. Great video!
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The snooker would certainly have been another good option there. Like you say though, sometimes when you've spent time getting things where you want them, you don't want to give a player an opportunity to smash things around and undo your hard work! Having said that you'd almost certainly end up with two shots, so probably would still have won. There's always more than one way to play every situation.

At 14.15 there is a big gap to pot a red from up the table in off the yellow; freeing up the pocket. You still have the yellow blocked on the bottom right side as you look at it on the video. Would this be a better option given you tied up 2 of your reds with your shot and with world rules you have to hit a cushion after contact with a ball and therefore have to hit it hard enough not to foul

@@ianwithers7395 I see. It's a possible option, not one I like personally as depending on how you contact the yellow it could end up sticking to the nearby red anyway, plus even if it goes well you've got rid of 2 of your balls and you've still got that problem area over the right of the table. I wouldn't want to be potting any balls the way the table is laid out.

Interesting that in the third frame you opted to play safety rather than go for the pot on the red that I think was probably “on” for a player of your skill level with a shot at position on the next red to get to the final red. The safety was probably more difficult than it looked. I hate to lose on a poor safety - I would rather give it a go in those circumstances rather than lose a frame like that. Perhaps the reason for my downfalll. Looks like a good/solid pool player needs to have a lot of self control to bide their time and then have the confidence to pot 5/6 balls and then the black! The player “bottled”the black. I am pretty competent at potting but have missed some easy blacks after potting much harder balls to get to that stage. Any tips on how to hold yourself together for the black? I find that sometimes I play it too slow without the usual confidence. Also concentrate on the black so much that the cue ball sometimes also finds a pocket🙄
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 4 жыл бұрын
It's always difficult on the black purely because of the pressure. Some people deal with it fine but for some the nerves start to creep in, they start to doubt themselves and like you say you tend to see more blacks missed than anything else. A little tip that I try to do which helps take the pressure off the pot and also avoid the in off, is to try and treat the shot like you are going to play another shot after it. Think about where you are going to put the white so that you are considering position, just as you would do with any other shot. It's always good to put the white in a relatively safe position after the black anyway, just in case you do miss. By doing this you feel like it's just another shot and it's not the scary final pressure shot it was before. All easier said than done of course, but it does help.

“Taylor Made” is the brand, it’s a play on words, made by a guy called Gary Taylor. It’s not tailor made for me (different spelling).

I feel like this is bad advice. You're playing down to the level of your opponent. Then when you play against someone good and you give them this many chances by playing half assed safeties, they're going to completely thrash you. Not to mention if you give your opponent enough chances they could fluke it eventually.

It’s advice aimed at lower level players who are playing league pool against opponents of a similar calibre. It’s solid fundamentals of tactics. Obviously when the level is higher things change a bit due to better potting and positional ability of your opponent, but I don’t think that’s the point of the vid.

right, so i just let my opponent on the last ball and then pull out the magic?? yeah sure
@PoolSchool

DiscriminatedMilk the easiest way to clear the table is when your opponent has made loads of space for you. It’s also so easy to snooker your opponent if they only have one ball left and you have all yours. Trust me it happens on a weekly basis in the league I play in, one player goes for it, misses his last ball and then the other guy clears up.

No they get points instead. 4 points for a standard foul and 5, 6 or 7 points if the foul involves the blue, pink or black.

bkzwolf same. Started playing local pool club 8 and 9 ball tournaments, and was astounded by how little a safety actually meant there. If I left a difficult pot on, they most likely went for it, sometimes got it. If safety wasn’t the only option / super easy, I would not consider playing it and just making the frame longer. However this is English pool -so different rules and measurements. I guess I’m just a more attacking player.

@@TobyMacNewsboys ah. English pool. Okay. I grew up playing somewhat commonly. no one in my family actually played in a team but we all enjoyed it; my pops I assume grew up playing it in bars. The idea was practically there's no shot you couldn't make. Long as that angle was 90 or smaller, if you hit it where you had to, it will go in. My father was a phenom at bank shots but beyond that I was blind to other strategies It wasn't until some months ago that I took a venture myself into what the internet had to teach that I learned about hitting left or right English and how that changes things. So it was primitive and about shot accuracy. I'm not saying I'm incredible. But there were shots here that I would feel confident in making and it was a big surprise to see him pull safety.

@@bkzwolf 100% agree with. Cue control and technical side of the video is spot-on. But as goes for attacking/defending, I guess a good snooker comparison would be Trump/Ronnie vs Selby/Ebdon.

John Lloyd the whole purpose is I’m trying to help all levels of players but in particular, beginners. If you’re a beginner you’re likely to be be playing lesser skilled players in lower leagues. If you know how to take advantage of their weaknesses you have an advantage, even if you don’t possess all the skills to be a good player yourself. Unfortunately if you’re a beginner playing a good player, you’re likely to just get beaten whatever you do!

Ok well I disagree. You play all pool rules with two thoughts - Can I clear up? Can I stop them clearing up? The frame at 11min was so bad I gave up.

Pool School let me expand more. At 8min the only shot red has (in WR) is to get the red up to the black and try cover the clear up. (Can I clear up? No. Can I stop yellow clearing up? Possibly). By going for the pot game was conceded; if it went in or not. You played to win as yellow
@PoolSchool
@PoolSchool 4 жыл бұрын
John Lloyd exactly! You seem to have missed the point, the red player in this video is exactly what you SHOULDN’T do, I’m explaining how to play as the yellow player. It may be obvious to most of us but I’m am still astounded by the amount of players I see in leagues that will go for pots like that regardless of what they face next.
@johnlloyd2513

Pool School I’ll say two things. 1. Your videos are well presented and edited. 2. This video would have been much better if you focused on the how to win a frame from the lesser advantaged player - that point was perfect to show how WR works - ie can I DF and gain advantage, is it worth a pot risk or do I attempt to block in the right corner. The problem is too many shots were bad shots in these frames. It didn’t emphasize WR enough and it could have / should have bring it is for WR. Just being constructive - I can understand you may not like that as editing is pain staking. And teaching the intricacies of WR is quite difficult. I play with Dylan Leary (current Euro Champ) and he’s a master of winning frames back from the lesser position by blocking balls in (and he got that from playing so much with Giuseppe D’imperio, who is the king of WR fudging). You said ‘red being the aggressive player’. But it was the wrong shot - as were many others. Teach the right shots. There may be several right shots, and point out the wrong shots. That red was just one of many examples of these frames all being played wrong (except the clear up obviously - but again that comes down to 1. Can I clear up v can I stop them. Which will vary depending on ability to clear up.). You talked of a difficult yellow on the rail, but it rolled to a ball over the pocket.

Shit advice, if your playing against an aggressive opponent, just give him 11 shots per game instead of finishing
