My momma was born in 1938 in France. She lived thru ww2 in France. She passed this past December. I am grateful she is not here to see what is going on. Over 3 years ago she said we were headed for ww3. She was seeing the signs and it scared her. So I am going all this alone with my dog.

That looks like what I do, but instead of adding hotdogs, which we do not eat. I add some corn beef and I will add also an egg or two. No sauce for us. Thanks for sharing Mama B!

I love Clara depression cooking. Her grandson filmed her I believe and asked her to cook for his friends. Making something out of nothing was what they did and shdd we showed us how her mother got them through tough times. Hell I’m sure a dollar was hard to find back then but simple meat potatoes and seasonings would send you to bed happy. I just watched her make Italian ice vid 👍🏼❤️

Love the one where she said they had some gal over for dinner then they went to town and saw her at a restaurant and they asked her why and she said they didn't feed her enough and she was still hungry. Here camera man was her grandson. She said they ate alot of potatoes.

Back in the 1950s my mom made a sausage stew, only she used sliced up hotdogs. Chopped up potatoes, celery, onions, carrots, potatoes, and the hotdogs. Water for broth. It was delicious. Could add parsley or whatever seasonings you like. Clara is a gem.

I had a dear elderly friend that grew up in the mountains of Kentucky and she made a meal she called Garden Goulash. She would fry up some bacon bits or left over ham add onions and whatever potatoes she had ,then whatever veggies were in the garden and of course some tomatoes and simmer. At the end she add a pinch of sugar and a hand full of corn meal and cooked until it thickened. It is still my favorite meal. Shes gone now but thank you Ruby.

My grandma has been making that for us since we were kids!! Yeah she would put it inside flour tortillas and make a breakfast burrito for us , she said she learned from her mother… so that was back in the 1950s!! And the recipe still holds up today… also instead of tomato sauce she would use jalapeño-tomato salsa!! And it was much better that way!!

It has been a few years since I've made this but you prompted me to pause the video and go get a pan of it started for hubby's lunch. Less onions for hubby per his taste and just two of the cheapo kind of hot dogs with 4 potatoes. It is smelling great and I remember that he enjoyed it last time. I'm thinking in the future of using a quart jar of home canned potatoes along with the 2 sausages for times when I may not have fresh potatoes. Thanks for the reminder of this goodie, Bev.

She was an amazing cook love her recipes. This looks fantastic. My oldest son the other day him and I were talking about when we use hot dogs on pizza when we would make a homemade pizza. He said he was talking to somebody at work my son is in his early forties and this coworker said they did the same thing when they were young. Pepperoni was a lot of money hamburger was quite a bit and I remember you used hamburger for something else but hot dogs we're more reasonable and so you use that as your topping on your pizza with cheese and sauce. Back then we would buy the package of the dry Pizza mix and that was a easy way to make a pizza for dinner. We did that once a week. It is very sad the prices that are happening my mom is 83 and she has had to learn how to cook through some really tough times when I was a baby. My mom said she would make a meal we were really poor and then how she would find other ingredients to add to the previous meal to try to make it stretch. She said many times she didn't eat because there wasn't enough food. I cannot imagine times like that. Although I remember time when my kids were young and I became a single mom my husband had left me with three little boys. It's amazing how when you have a knowledge of cooking you can create amazing meals and survive we did and now we've got to go back to the skills people need to wake up. I remember every Saturday night for a while my mom would make white rice we would put milk on it with cinnamon and sugar that would be dinner. My mom raised us kids my birth father was not around. My mom worked and she said she cooked homemade meals even though she worked full time so on Saturday nights we had white rice with cinnamon and sugar milk on it. We never knew why but my sister and I will say today we thought it was great it was tasty. My favorite thing someone could do if they had eggs is make a good old dish of rice pudding. That could make a good meal as well if you had your own eggs rice milk cinnamon sugar yum yum

I get my groceries delivered, I haven't stepped foot in a store since 2017/2018 probably. But the main issue I run into is produce. I usually buy my produce in singles versus the bags, because the people shopping don't give a crap. I've gotten a bag of apples or potatoes with a handful already rotten. I do get my money back, but I still don't want to have to deal with that. So I pay extra and get two or three at a time. I have tried gardening the last two years with no success, but I am learning more every year so it isn't a total loss. :) My Mom has a green thumb, but I am the opposite, she helped me get my garden set up and it was flourishing during the weeks of her visit, as soon as she left things went downhill. Hahaha I love Clara's videos though. I have watched them many times, it felt like sitting with my Nan - I LOVE hearing stories. :)

That looks pretty good to me. I'm in my 70's and from a family with 7 kids. Believe me the depression era spilled into our house many times. I remember my grandmother making scrapple but also we had fried "cornmeal mush" with homemade maple syrup from maple flavoring and sugar syrup. Many a breakfast was a large biscuit made in a cast iron skillet on the stovetop with butter and syrup. It tasted good to me then and it still does now.. Thanks Bev.

Been a minute since I made Poor Man’s Meal..my family liked it. One of the few dishes they all agreed on! I’ve used diced ham instead of hot dogs, and probably way more sauce than I shoulda. I also used regular tomato sauce as that’s how I interpreted her recipe before I saw her book. I’d just add Italian Seasoning. I will definitely be trying this out again since I’m only cooking for 4 instead of 12 like in the old days.

I know this is about frugal cooking, but I just finished doing the dinner dishes and I noticed that my favorite Dollar Tree round scrub pad with a course side and a mesh side...the sponge in the center was disintegrating, and my favorite Dobie pad with plastic on the outside, was falling apart but the sponge was almost perfect. Yes, I opened up the Dollar Tree pad on the mesh side, pulled out the disintegrating sponge, then I removed the Dobie sponge and inserted it in the Dollar Tree pad and hand stitched the mesh closed.

I have been making that for a will now every since I first saw Clara's video on it. I usual use small red potatoes washed well because I don't peel them and I used any kind of weiner or sausage from regular to little cocktail sausages. The first time I made it I didn't have tomato sauce or paste and used ketchup I stead.
