@@sweeney60hey man! Yeah, I'm a massive life long fan.. I know everything about her. She is not a trained operatic singer. Thats very different. And the family was not classical musicians. @claytonberg721 Жыл бұрын
@@sweeney60 Yes. She took vocal lessons in the early 80's because she wanted to do this and record an album of standards with Nelson Riddle. I feel she really found her voice on the heart like a wheel album, and then got even better in the 80's due to both this and the nelson riddle album. If you listen to her live performance of 'don't know much' in 1990 I think her tone was better then than it was in 1975. She's really one of a kind.

I think had Linda Ronstadt begun training early enough she could have been a brilliant opera singer. She was already past 30 by the time she started working on this. I saw this in Central Park, a perfect show for a beautiful summer evening! And among the fantastically talented cast -- Linda Ronstadt, Rex Smith, Kevin Kline, George Rose and Tony Azito -- the standout was the great Patricia Routledge as Ruth: a master class in how to project comedy to a huge outdoor amphitheater. Also, though she had sung G & S "straight" for the BBC (Iolanthe and Mad Margaret), the way she adjusted her vocal style for this version was so savvy. Glad there are clips of her and this show around.

If she sang this performance without training, it shows her promise. That promise was fulfilled after she had training and coaching before the movie was filmed. Holy crap. The whole production was done in order to get more people interested in operetta so they used big name pop ock singers of the time to get a larger and more diverse audience interested. They took liberties, used a pop singer with a lovely and not opera trained voice. I bet there are singers who performed as Mabel who were technically trained for it who did it in the correct key or whatever people are complaining about. It wasn't Lina Ronstadt who chose to move the key. It was the musical director's choice. She also is really a lyrics soprano that they made sound like a coloratura for this part which is very hard to do. As a classically trained singer myself (14+ years Bel Canto) who can sing both versions of the song, I prefer this one better because it shows off the entire voice rather than just one part. I also think it's makes it more fun to sing but that's my personal opinion.
