Poor work or bad day? We had to put it right either way!! Day in the life of a Plumber

Just another day in the life of a plumber but I Would love to know what plumbers thoughts are on the situation we found ourselves in on this job, have you been in this situation? Following the rules as a plumber or gas engineer is never easy there are grey areas that we come across sometimes where your judgment has to come into it which is what we had to do on this job you will see.
Also we have some very handy videos on fixing a very common fault when it comes to toilets, if you know what part to replace and how it comes apart it can be the difference between a few hours struggle to a 10 min simple job. But not even we get it correct as you will see, we made a mistake on one of them!

Respect for giving the other installer the benefit there! Dead easy to rip into other people’s work! We can all make mistakes. If it is shoddy and he keeps doing it then it all changes! Can’t be leaving dangerous work!

The filter- weve all had shit jobs where you struggle for space and try to keep it tight, but no excuse for not sealing the flue

another great video, well done mate, one thing I learnt many years ago, its so easy to criticise, anyone can do it, if you look hard enough you can always pick fault in someone elses work, like you, I prefer not to criticise, people do things for a reason and I think most people are doing it for the right reason.

Agree we all get a bad run out of materials ie sand & Cement Trying complete the job in one day can’t go back next day because got another booked in, but I can’t let bad workmanship on a blr pass pop round one evening or a Saturday and seal the flue outside it’s only costing you time after all you’ve been paid to complete the job plus you can sleep at night knowing you left no gas safety defects.

Good video mate, would always recommend holding the basked when taking out the centre flush on the toilet as it can spin and then start leaking from under the cistern

Iv now converted to Fischer cement in a tube . Forget knocking up in a bucket anymore and making a right mess

i use KOS Fire cement. either comes in a tub or a silicone tube

Not sure id have been brave enough to risk the service valve on that wirquin toilet. No way to replace it if it weeps set right into tiles on the floor. 😬 Few good jobs as always. 👌

Ow bin ya mate. Great content again....the boiler....sorry, no excuse for not sealing the flue, just laziness. We all have bad days yes....but to not seal the flue, not good enough. Then the condensate...silicon? Mmmmmm nahh. Good chance the leak was showing when they were commissioning too. But at least you sorted it now buddy. Good work again, look forward to the next one.

I thought on a worchester that because it had a screw fixing u didnt need to seal the flue, because on the older one it ment u could get fge flue out to replaced the expansion vessel

Always known outside minimum has to be sealed on flue to be honest

When removing the vale take your time push down and hold square or you may break the lugs that hold it in

Had the cage come loose too as it was put in loose and it was letting bye and ran constant ,also had the too tight and the china was out of shape in the base and bulled the cage out of shape and it kept letting bye.

Taps at the back of the bath on an external wall any tricks to get them off to get in and out quicker no access from either side😭😭

Loving the channel mate, nice to see an honest engineer doing a solid days work. As said, it's so easy to slag off the previous workman but it's a low blow most of the time, I prefer to try and maintain professionalism unless it's safety related. In my experience roofers are the worst trades to follow re riddor situations! Out of interest, are you ex BG? I'm a BG engineer and a lot of your work practices seem very in line with how I work! Just curious

Great upload again Luke... Sorry but not sealing the flue either inside or out is a big red flag as an engineer who doesn't care... Either that or he had an apprentice who said he had sealed the flue when asked... Either way its a big risk if your putting your signature to the installation.

Basic checks flue sealed and working pressure, plus silicone in condensate is just lazy by looks of it…they am jobs you would give an apprentice as well but you always check there work just to be sure so sloppy work by looks of it 👍

Once the work has been carried on the Worcester boiler, do they continue their warranty or once it has failed the installation guidance Bosch void the boiler from guarantee?

Warranty will continue as long as all defects have been put right, if Worcester come back out and work hasn’t been carried out they wouldn’t honour warranty, we done them a report with photos they could send to Worcester 👍

Does the outside need sand and cement, if its got a rubber seal fitted? What if your not sealing to brickwork, wooden or plastic cladding for instance. Also if you use a high level flue kit all the work is done from the inside, Im only putting these questions out there 👍

It’s a great question mate especially for working at heights as like you said you can fit them Worcester’s from high level…I would think high level inside properly sealed minimum? Il have to check with that one

Put it this way, if it’s at high level then it will never get checked. Worcester for instance say that the seal alone is fine but gas safe want both sides sealed. The inside is sealed to stop products of combustion entering inside if the flue was to leak inside the hole it passes through, corrosion etc. the outside is to stop products of combustion being sucked back into the hole the flue passes through so the rubber seal if sufficient in doing that job. That’s my take as a gas man.

Commonly find brand new installs with condi pumps wired on the switch, honestly feel bad for the guys doing it as they're clearly not prepared to be doing the work they're doing and probably won't improve the way they're doing it. They're only going to shoot themselves in the foot in the long run.

Didn't notice you use the isolation valves on the magnetic cleaner. If so, wise choice. Went to close mine to clean it and they started to leak from the tap seal 😱. Opened them again and they resealed when the hot water started to flow 😌. I guess I have to replace it. Didn't know the boiler has isolators. Can I can use them to avoid draining down? Or are they flakey too?

Isolation on boilers rule of thumb don’t touch, only certain boilers them ok to touch, normally a Worcester your ok, unless it’s a really old CDI them they will leak just by looking at them

Too many red flags for it to be a bad day, low working pressure, unsealed flue and external condensate not lagged, installer needs a refresher.

Probably ran out of sundries, sand, cement and solvent weld glue. Micro leaks are a pita, everyone has them from time to time. I know on installs, I call the team and ask how they doing and if they need anything. If the installation guy has a service contract why not rectify these faults on a service. A bit slack really.

Yeah it’s had 2 services since it was installed so had 2 chances to sort install defects out, could of been a bad day but could be like that’s everyday which would be worrying

As for that Worcester. Some dipsticks should be banned for life from any plumbing work. I've spent two Saturdays installing 6 (sic!) pumps in manifold cabinets that were two sizes to small, because some imbecile wanted to save some pennies. Not to mention that the same imbecile was brave enough to assume that the internal pump of a gas heater will suffice for 3-storey house with floor heating and radiators. I did two houses, each one of them opulently finished and decorated, so it was a very stressful job. And worst of all I know that installing 3-zone hydraulic separator would be the best solution, but piping is laid so badly there no physical way to do it without ruining the interiors. I wish people would clean their toilets before our arrival. Anyway, you did a great job again.

Sounds like you’ve had a nightmare job there mate! When you change a shower valve you should always flush the pipe work to ensure there is no more debris in the pipe work.
