I don't normally say this, Weird Al Yankovic's parody of this is actually better than the original song. Not only because it's called Word Crimes and complains about the popular misusages of grammar, but also because I honestly can't remember the lyrics to Blurred Lines even while I'm listening to it in this video. Yankovic has effectively replaced this song in my brain with his own, which I am surprisingly okay with.

I dunno, it seems a HUGE stretch to consider it "rapey" It's a song quite literally about consent and about how it can be ambiguous. A concept that is so universally understood that "affirmative consent" is considered a better alternative, and many argue it must be both "affirmative" (ie: verbal) and ongoing. Thicke may be a douche, but the people describing the song as "controversial" in content are substantially worse bc they demean the debate around consent & abuse...

Stumbling across this video 4.5 years after the hayday of this song is a trip. I remember being in high school and having a brief disagreement with my gym teacher. We were cycling (which means we were listening to this CD that had a bunch of pop songs on it, and it was the same CD every time) and I was asking if we could volunteer our own songs for it. She was saying probably not since kids these days like music with terrible messages in it as this song was playing over her. I pointed out the clear and obvious meanings in this song after she defined "terrible messages" as promoting drug use and violence. Blurred Lines references using pot, and more importantly, sexual assault. But nah, you see, that song was popular, you know, with the kids. So it was okay. Looking back, she was an anti-vaxxer, so I guess I shouldn't have been expecting her to think through her stances very thoroughly.

The thing is, though, Sex Type Thing was/is a song that Scott Weiland wrote specifically as a disgusted criticism of rape & rape culture. Truly. Look back on many live performances. He would come out dressed in dresses & lingerie, makeup, etc...he would preface the live performances with something about douchebag meatheads who actually think like the lyrics of the song. That makes Blurred Lines all the more inherently gross because I do NOT think those lyrics are self-aware or done to speak out against rape or meaningful in any way. Sex Type Thing is an anomaly of art- It is a song about a most unsexy reality that simultaneously manages to be sexy (mostly because of the bassline, thrashing guitar hook & the brilliant vocal delivery by Weiland). By contrast, this song by Robin just feels so icky & tasteless. *Edited to add: Watching all of this twice, I am pretty sure you absolutely GET IT. Otherwise, you wouldn't have made the comparison.

This song makes me cringe. Especially after Robin Thicke turns out to be as much of a creepy douchebag in real life than he was in the song. I mean, it's one thing if it's a image. It's another thing when your image gets too real. I just noticed. Paula could make for a great episode of Trainwreckords.

It is a blessing that I am German when it comes to this type of songs. I learned English in school but heard English songs before I could understand their lyrics. That means, I still don't listen to the lyrics unless I am focusing on them. I just hear the music and the voice is just another instrument for me. Sounds weird, I know.

The only good thing about the song is the beat. The only good thing about the video is that... well, I gotta admit, "ROBIN THICKE HAS A BIG DICK" is actually pretty hilarious, and it feels like it was intentionally silly, so they succeeded in making me giggle at that part. Besides that, though, the song's gross.
@browncoat6977 жыл бұрын
Pharrell said he sampled it IIRC, while Robin Thicke insisted it was original but "inspired" by another song. Lost in court.

Pretty much all of the problems with this song could have been solved by bringing in a female rapper instead of TI. He didn't do anything wrong, but they could have portrayed the female's perspective at that point in the song, as a rebuttal. Run The Jewels do something similar in Love Again.

True story: Blurred Lines played during the reception of my brother’s wedding. I immediately sat down in protest. But then I went to the DJ and requested “Get Lucky” be played after this. Interestingly enough, I think “Happy” had played after it (it was May 2014). But “Get Lucky” did play and I was much happier and returned the dance floor. Doing God’s work I guess =]
