I don't normally say this, Weird Al Yankovic's parody of this is actually better than the original song. Not only because it's called Word Crimes and complains about the popular misusages of grammar, but also because I honestly can't remember the lyrics to Blurred Lines even while I'm listening to it in this video. Yankovic has effectively replaced this song in my brain with his own, which I am surprisingly okay with.

I dunno, it seems a HUGE stretch to consider it "rapey" It's a song quite literally about consent and about how it can be ambiguous. A concept that is so universally understood that "affirmative consent" is considered a better alternative, and many argue it must be both "affirmative" (ie: verbal) and ongoing. Thicke may be a douche, but the people describing the song as "controversial" in content are substantially worse bc they demean the debate around consent & abuse...

Dm Gray it’s a song about pushing consent and pushing when it’s not given, what about that isn’t rapey? And “sexual harassy” doesn’t have the ring to it. Saying something is “rapey” doesn’t mean “this person is definitely a rapist” it means more “kind of getting a feel that you don’t really respect sexual boundaries and suck at taking the answer you’re given...”

God, I remember when this song first came out, I hated it on a visceral level: between his voice, the creepy ass lyrics, the fact that Robin Thicke looked like a sleazy drug dealer from a bad 80’s crime movie. It was all so immediately repulsive. I had to straight up stop listening to my local pop station for 2 months straight because I didn’t want to risk having to hear this song. Returning to it years later, I have to say.....nothing. It’s still horrible.

Not sure if Tumblr made me hate this song because so many people pointed out how predatory it sounds or if it's really just that horrible. For real there's a couple of lines in this song that were the exact words said to me by the guy that sexually assaulted me. "I know you want it" and "good girl". I'm honestly not sure if I would actually care about the song at all if it wasn't for Tumblr. I can't listen to this song without cringing. It's catchy as fuck though, I'll give it that.

I hated 3 of them and liked two but just decided instead to just hear artist that I found more interesting. Betweem Blurred Lines and Get lucky, I preferred blurred lines a lot more because it was at least fun. Get Lucky was ome of those songs I just got bored mid way through and just change the station to anything else. I would care for album of the year prizes and shit if we didn't live in a world were Taylor Swift won Album of the Year. I still remember it playing on the radio when i was like, five, or something.... This is so wierd... Please, someone tell me I misunderstood something in the video and Get Lucky is actually older, because I feel like my whole life is fake now.

Coming back to this... ugh, that video. On top of everything else wrong with it, I loathe the filter they put over it that tints everything a dull shade of salmon. It reminds me of some old albums I find at the thrift store sometimes, where I'm not sure if they were printed that way on purpose or if they just kind of faded, but either way it just feels... off. "Sickly" is the wrong word, but it makes everything feel that much more lethargic.

Oh my fucking God, Todd!!! You included a clip from a song from my *all-time favorite rock band,* STONE TEMPLE PILOTS! The thing is, though, Sex Type Thing was/is a song that Scott Weiland wrote specifically as a disgusted criticism of rape & rape culture. Truly. Look back on many live performances. He would come out dressed in dresses & lingerie, makeup, etc...he would preface the live performances with something about douchebag meatheads who actually think like the lyrics of the song. That makes Blurred Lines all the more inherently gross because I do NOT think those lyrics are self-aware or done to speak out against rape or meaningful in any way. Sex Type Thing is an anomaly of art- It is a song about a most unsexy reality that simultaneously manages to be sexy (mostly because of the bassline, thrashing guitar hook & the brilliant vocal delivery by Weiland). By contrast, this song by Robin just feels so icky & tasteless. *Edited to add: Watching all of this twice, I am pretty sure you absolutely GET IT. Otherwise, you wouldn't have made the comparison.

Stumbling across this video 4.5 years after the hayday of this song is a trip. I remember being in high school and having a brief disagreement with my gym teacher. We were cycling (which means we were listening to this CD that had a bunch of pop songs on it, and it was the same CD every time) and I was asking if we could volunteer our own songs for it. She was saying probably not since kids these days like music with terrible messages in it as this song was playing over her. I pointed out the clear and obvious meanings in this song after she defined "terrible messages" as promoting drug use and violence. Blurred Lines references using pot, and more importantly, sexual assault. But nah, you see, that song was popular, you know, with the kids. So it was okay. Looking back, she was an anti-vaxxer, so I guess I shouldn't have been expecting her to think through her stances very thoroughly.
