I once decided to befriend a girl who warned me she was "crazy" and would say to me "I get what I want" and whom repeatedly threatened to send "receipts" to my then partner if I didn't agree to date her. I was like "there aren't any receipts though, and I've told my partner about this girl, so it's an empty threat... I have nothing to worry about, I've been open the whole time about this" so I didn't take it seriously, assuming that whatever she would try would _obviously_ fail. Well when I went into hospital with a lung infection, I discovered what she meant. She'd made her own "receipts" to make it seem like I was cheating with her. She was genuine about it, and my partner would not listen to the fact that half the things in those receipts didn't even make sense and that I had not hidden my friendship with this girl in anyway, which surely I would have done had this been true. She even accused me of "faking" my child abuse and strained family relationship because the crazy girl didn't know about that (as why would I advertise that?) and had put in references to my family. The girl who warned me she was crazy then befriended my partner to really push that she could be trusted and I couldnt - and while all this was going down, I was on an oxygen tank unable to breathe not knowing a thing about it. After a few weeks, the girl who just dropped an atom bomb on my life contacts me and is like "cool we can date now you're single right?" and I'm like "😶" Basically guys, Todd's right. If a girl warns you she's crazy, fucking listen and stay far, far away. Don't think you have nothing to worry about. I made that god damn mistake and it cost me dearly. I'm not even all that angry about it anymore, I'm just shocked she managed to cause such damage so quickly and didnt think that I would be upset by it.

*Has Egyptian aesthetic* *Song talks about Greek Goddess* Logic: 100 Edit: I see that people are talking about how Cleopatra was Greek and how Greeks shared some gods and goddesses with Egypt, and that's well and good and I'm all for factual evidence. However, I very much doubt that they actually thought that hard about it, and Aphrodite is still more associated with the Greeks than the Egyptians (at least in my mind), so I still think it's kind of thematically jumbled, if that makes any sense.

The sad thing is the whole "dark and gritty crimefighter" thing is largely a modern development. My brother (or sister as I can not tell by your name), then I have a feeling you have not dabbed into the Broadway musical “The Book of Mormon”. Dahmer gets to pop on stage for the song “Spooky Mormon Hell Dream”. Of course it’s meant for comedy since the main character is terrified the minor shitty things he’s done will put him in Hell with Dahmer and Johnny Cochran (with his catchy line with the way he sings it - “I got OJ free”. And I think Pol Pot is the other guy in his dream (?) - it’s been a while since I listened to the song. Best line still has to be the main character angry screaming - “I can’t believe Jesus just called me a dick!!!” But considering he was a cannibal and trying to make sex zombies...Probably not someone to put in a song like this.
@s.g.75725 жыл бұрын
I love the Book of Mormon. But a reference to one of the world’s most twisted serial killers works in that because it’s got a constantly dark and offensive sense of humour, whereas Katie Perry...well, I’ve seen episodes of Sesame Street with more morbid tones. It’s like if I was watching Kung Fu Panda and they made a reference to Mao, or if I was reading Harry Potter and Fred West was a character. Dark shit only works if it matches the tone.
@kimberlyhaines1075 жыл бұрын
S. G. Well...It is a bit dark in that she seems to kill some dudes, and alludes to some bad punishments. Though I’m sure it’s meant to allude more to that she’ll have your heart in a metaphorical way, so that you can’t give it away to someone else. Still a bit morbid. Bit sad I didn’t get to see it (unless you consider our local dinner theater doing it) when the tour came through to my city because I was in Florida and the Bahamas for 3 weeks. Though I feel like I remember they said there were 2 companies and one was a bit lackluster.

Greek mythology should be a correct theme to adapt from because of Aphrodite being mentioned in the lyrics. I mean this song's market isn't really the boys the lyrics ostensibly talk to; it's girls pumping themselves up, imagining being powerful- I say this as a girl who quite likes this song. It doesn't have to be convincing, it's only the desire to be this that has to be relatable, because it's no secret that this is something Katy Perry wishes were true, she's not being Beyonce, she's telling a story. A power fantasy story, but it's not quite the same as like a power anthem. So yeah, nail on the head, power fantasy, but with a knowing wink. (I know this was ages ago, but Katy Perry still tells stories, in a slightly different way to other pop stars. I don't see her as inauthentic as much as role-playing to process the personal. I mean that's done in pop and all, but it's a real throughline here.)

I didn't like this song when it first came out. I tried to avoid it but it was EVERYWHERE and it eventually beat me into surrender and compliance with it's relentless airplay. That's not even sarcasm. I love this song now. It's in my playlist! It's so catchy!

I mean her vocal range is actually pretty big for someone of her style, and her performances from the quarantine show real vocal improvement. I suggest watching her performance of roar from international womans day. Her vocals are really good now.

Watching this knowing that after this it would start her complete downfall kinda makes sense on why her career without Dr. Luke fixing her songs just went down the toilet.

I had to look up that lyric from Juicy J. Jeffery Dahmer, was a serial killer who literally cannibalized his victims. Yeah that seems like an appropriate line for a Katy Perry song.

I never got the impression she was doing the scorn thing. I just thought she was saying "Look before you get into this, know that I'm a fuckin broken psychopath, and it's gonna be a nightmare"... Which is something I can totally get down with. If you look at the lyrics, aside from the "make me your enemy" line, I don't think she says anything about doing her wrong. I also think I just hear what I wanna hear sometimes.
@meddle3335 жыл бұрын
I'm saying this because it could potentially be a flaw with your whole critcism... You say it yourself, that you don't buy KP being some implacable rage goddess... Especially after x amount of breakup songs where she talks about what a mess she is. I see it as just another song where she talks about what a mess she is. Idk. It's not one of my favorite songs of hers anyway. I just thought I'd mention that. No one is ever gonna read this anyway. 🤣

I hate the music video and juicy j in the song, but I think it’s a great love song. It shows the ugly side of love, the dark and passive nature that comes with love. She’s saying worship me and I’ll give you everything “perfect magic” her love is overtaking. It’s inspired by the craft, hence the levitating line. It’s not a perfect song and lyrically is a Lot of chaos

The dog made me sad. He could barely walk on his front paws, so when he stood up, it shows it was one of those cases where they hit the dog’s front paws until the get up just to keep themselves safe. It’s kind of minor but it’s annoying.

Ah there we go. 11:38, he finally figured out she's supposed to be a goddess. It doesn't make the song any better or worse, but hearing him fumble around with things like "witchy love magic" despite an Aphrodite namedrop so early in the song was a bit embarrassing. That's probably the one clear metaphor in the song: she's a fickle and vengeful goddess.

@@LUNITUNZBackup So what say you? That's how I understood the song. so I thought Todd well either missunderstood it or took it differently perhaps. But yes to me that's what it sounded like. That falling in love with her is like playing the Ouija. You'd better be dam sure of what the hell you're doing and be carefull to do it right or else. Either way if a dark horse is what Todd said it is I guess Kate was wrong in saying that then. Because it's a demon you call forth from a Ouija.

Listening to the song, I've come to 2 equally possible explanations for "Dark Horse": #1 It's meant figuratively - she's coming at you with the force and terror of a dark horse #2 Katy Perry mispronounced "dark curse" and the lable didn't allow for a new recording, but changed the title instead 😂

What the fuck happened to writing catchy pop songs. After all, there is a legitimate art to the writing of a catchy 3 minute radio friendly song. Look at the Smiths. The songs are catchy with witty tongue in cheek lyrics and infectious guitar riffs. Granted, the Smiths are not what we really would consider pop music, but they show that you can make catchy, upbeat songs without sacrificing your artist integrity. Look at Madonnas early stuff. Super fun. She didn't take herself too seriously. What happened? Katy Perry, Taylor Swift...these artists are trying to hard and the results are shit. Not even listenable. Not at all fun.

@nekovalley8 жыл бұрын
She could have easily said something like "make me your cleopatra" and it'd fit the syllables and everything, just tweak the rhymes a bit and it would've fit with her dumb fucking Egyptian thing.
