Trying to find a relationship is stressful, and trying to go after someone who's not into you romantically is only going to hurt you both. Respect costs nothing. i gotta mention that 15 year old girls can definitely be in abusive relationships, but yes, the song is so insincere, selfish, and out of its depth that it's downright insulting to abuse survivors to treat it as any kind of response to domestic violence
@AlbinoTuxedo6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the record label realized that the song's lyrics are kind of irksome and tried to correct course by making the abuse undertones more prominent in the video. That way you can justify the whole thing by saying it's anti-abuse, when the original lyrics don't mention abuse at all and just focuses on how better Mendes is compared with the other guy.

I hate the argument about the video being about domestic violence. Nothing in the lyrics of the song, or even the tone of the song, reference domestic violence. There are LOTS of music videos that take a song a different route entirely, or have nothing to do with it, and this is no exception. That video is a weak cover for this "I know better than you, I'm a nice guy so ride my dick" song.

I'm surprised Todd didn't mention Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" when talking about female versions of this type of song. I know "Girlfriend" paints its protagonist as the pettiest, most vindictive, most immature of punks, but at least the song is upbeat and playful, and showcases enough self-awareness to know that it's nothing more than a stupid, petty party anthem about a vindictive brat. Side-note: Has anyone ever noticed how similar Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift's careers are? They both started as promising singer-songwriters in genres that were probably way too out of their depth, thereby making them look like posers in said genres. Built a strong teen girl fan-base as the antithesis of other contemporary pop stars by writing lyrics that better relate to their core base. Then when they reached adulthood, they had no idea how to age artistically, made a drastic change in their sound and image, and now arguably have become the very things they spoke out against as teenagers. I'm digressing. This video is about Shawn Mendes, but I don't care enough about him to warrant even mentioning his name more than once.

Another way Taylor's song works better than this one is the fact that she actually lists some specific reasons the girl isn't right for him and why she is a better fit. Like I'm not a fan of the petty, smugly superior "she wears high heels and I wear sneakers" nonsense but in the verses she does go little beyond that and explains some specifics like how the girl is mean to him and how Taylor's character understands him better. Shawn gives absolutely no reason why this guy is supposedly not good for her other than "he's not me".

Bryan Smith I agree. The line is, in fact "wasted crying". Which makes mendes look like even MORE like a douchebag, because he's just mad that she's not with him, and with someone else, and is just thinking with his dick, NOT his brain or heart, and trying to be there for her emotionally, but just saying "hey, baby, what are you doing with this douche, and crying about it, when you COULD be with ME!" Although that's the whole song. I agree, if he REALLY cared about her, he'd be there for her when she needed him, NOT just there when It's most convenient, or only as an object. Having seen people be abused like this myself, and having female friends, I try and treat every single one of them like people, and not as objects, something we should do for all of our friends, male or female. Something Shawn Mendes needs to learn, because he's a very, VERY poor man's Nick Jonas.

Go ahead, I'll wait... though I do suppose I'd be waiting a really long time, as there isn't a single lyric where that happens. So instead of pushing your bullcrap belief that this is an anti-abuse song, how about checking out some REAL anti-abuse songs: - "Face Down" by Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - "When the Thunder Rolls" by Garth Brooks - "Mansion" or "Therapy Session" by NF - "Luka" by Suzanne Vega And finally, for a role reversal on the subject (a man being abused by a woman), try "Pulling Teeth" by Green Day.

The worst part about this song is that lyrics are just nice guy douchiness. Then the video drops, trying to paint that it is about an abusive relationship, so everyone jumps to defend it. If the original lyrics reflected that, it might have turned out decent. But it doesn't. It is one of the worst songs I've heard in a while, mostly because of this mentality and the attempt at hiding the bullshit in the video that doesn't really represent the lyrics.

I think that the main issue is that "nice guys" ( the kind that Todd mentions in the video) is that they don't seem to understand that being nice doesn't automatically give you access to the twins and their little sister. Being nice should be a common courtesy that you extend to most people, not jut people you want to bang. You need to put in more work if you want to win the heart of someone. Okay, I'm stepping off my soapbox now. XD

There's also the fact that very often your stereotypical "nice guy" doesn't seem to understand what constitutes actually behaving nicely towards a woman. Or anyone actually, though woman in particular. A general lack of social skills coupled with too much red pill will do that to a person. The whole "nice guy" rhetoric is a way of blaming anyone but themselves for their own absence of social graces.

Like, Quasi in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996) as opposed to himself in the much less artistic, much more mean-spirited sequel!
@GivenFailure8 жыл бұрын
I think a large part of the difference between a song like "You belong with me" or even something like "Girlfreind"(which is super aggressive "nice girl" syndrome) is that judging by the video and tone it seems like the girl Shawn Mendes is talking about might be emotionally or physically abused... and then he's like "you need help getting out of this relationship... how 'bout you get on my dick"
@8bitdiedie8 жыл бұрын

I hate whininess. I hate Treat You Better and I hate Belong With Me. Actually I abhor Treat You Better. At least Taylor gives legit reasons that she is better. "You're on the phone with your girlfriend She's upset She's going off about something that you said 'Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do" "And you've got a smile that could light up this whole town I haven't seen it in a while since she brought you down" "Oh, I remember you drivin' to my house in the middle of the night I'm the one who makes you laugh When you know you're about to cry And I know your favorite songs And you tell me about your dreams". She's established that she actually has quite a relationship with this dude, a very close and intimate relationship. The worst part of the song is the whiney 'you'd be better with me' (not just 'you belong with me', that would be fine if he's single. It's 'she's not good enough for you') and the whole mean girl cheerleader thing. And of course it’s internal monologue, she’s not actually telling this guy to his face, at the end of the video he figures it out for himself. Mendez is a whiney 'nice guy'. ‘He’s a jerk and you belong with me. You should be sleeping with me.’ At least Taylor was sweet and innocent. Mendez isn’t sweet or innocent. He’s not like ‘he treats you wrong but I’ll treat you better, I’ll listen to your feelings and tell you you’re not emotional. I’ll hold your hand through rough times because we’re friends first.’ No, it’s ‘I’m such a nice guy, why won’t you sleep with me?’ And I hate it so much.

Oh I've been waiting for this one! Also, I'd say that one way "You Belong With Me" is better than "Treat You Better" is that Swift at least makes a case why they AREN'T right for each other. Like how his girlfriend doesn't get his humor and how she brings him down. That relationship has obvious problems! Mendez just describes this as a "wrong situation", which could be taken as abuse, but could also just be seen as him thinking it's wrong because he's not in on it. Without the video, there's no indicators that she was abused or that the relationship even has concrete troubles.He just focuses on what he'd do different or at least better. Not a good case.

As a several-time victim of "nice guys," I can concur that this god-forsaken lines up PERFECTLY with how these assholes act. It's especially jarring to me because it's really, REALLY hard for me to have any attraction to anyone who I'm not good friends with (with few exceptions), and when people who I think I've gotten to know suddenly switch gears from "yeah hehe we friends it's cool" to "I'm owed a relationship to you because I've been nice to you." There's a huge frickin reason why I've been single my whole life XD. But seriously, this whole idea is atrocious and deserves nothing but scorn from any and all genders. You are not owed a relationship, it's not a prize to be won. It's earned through MUTUAL RESPECT.

@sinistrality78832 жыл бұрын
ain't C the key every pop musicians use since it's the only key with no Sharps and Flats? so if you wanna write a chord progression you don't have to worry about it being flat or sharp, it's just one whole note.
@HyenaFox2 жыл бұрын
@@sinistrality7883 Actually no, though that's good thinking, it has a lot more to do with the instrument you play. A lot of guitarists generally write songs in keys that can take advantage of the common open chord shapes on guitar as they ring out the best, so those are the keys of A, G, E, and D major. Also C major, but C major has an F chord which is difficult to play for beginners on guitar. Shawn Mendes uses the key of C# in a ton of songs because it's C, but with a capo on the first fret, so all open shapes are still usable, but you get a different sound. C is the easiest key to conceptualize if you're learning sheet music or piano, because you don't have to deal with sharps and flats, but guitarists don't really have to care too much about that making things more difficult to play, as it kinda doesn't make things any more difficult.

even if that were truly the intention and not just a coverup for the annoying nice-guy qualities in the song, it sounds more like hes trying to take advantage of a girl in an abusive relationship. actually supporting an abuse victim should revolve around the victim and getting them out of/supporting them in their situation, not " *i* can treat you better", " *i* would be a perfect boyfriend", "you should go out with *me* ", "dump your abusive guy and choose *me* instead", " *i* am such a great guy"
@JennaLeigh6 жыл бұрын
That's an incredibly simplistic, basic, half assed cover up. The entire song is saying "leave him, I'm better". "You should be with ME." There is ZERO indication in the lyrics that this is about abuse. Nevermind that if a woman is being abused, trying to coax/persuade/force her to be with you is better....how? How about being there for her? Maybe stop presuming that she can't handle her self. There are so many holes in your argument that it's sad.

One of the bigger gripes I have with this song that wasn't bought up in the review was it's overproduction. WGWAG songs, whatever your opinion of them, at least have the impression of intimacy due to their minimal instrumentation and the fact that an acoustic guitar is rather soft-sounding, and some songs, such as "Hey There Delilah", benefit a lot more from it than if they had any more advanced instrumentation. But with the over-polished style and the loud drums, it removes any sense of intimacy, and goes completely against the image Mendes is aiming for. It doesn't feel like a guy serenading you. It feels like a guy making an extremely grandiose statement while pouring his heart out, which goes completely against the message of something like "Stitches" or even this repugnant song.

IMO in the song Mendez is just imagining that the girl he likes is in an abusive relationship because he's jealous that she's with the other guy and not him.

Mendes sounds *exactly* like Phil Collins on "Illegal Alien" with that "betta dan he can" line.

Also, the music video's narrative is all about an actually abusive relationship, which is meant to make the song seem more reasonable. Compared to, y'know, an actual abusive monster, Shawn Mendes is indeed a 'nicer guy'. But this concept is never once mentioned in the lyrics! We actually know nothing about ANY relationship here except that Mendes has convinced himself this random girl isn't in love with her partner, based on zero evidence other than "I can see it in your face". Which means that whoever directed the music video heard the song, was like "This is utter bullshit", and deliberately changed the narrative of the song in an attempt to make it slightly more palatable. And EVEN WITH THE CONTEXT OF AN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP, Mendes is STILL an insufferable little shit. Truly impressive.

I think it's kind of fucked up how instead of being concerned his friend out of an abusive relationship, he seems more interested in swooping in and taking her for himself. Like, dude get your priorities straight. It's also probably a bit douchey to even try to go after someone in such a vulnerable position like that. If he were actually a "nice guy" he would at least wait a while before trying to start something with a broken woman just coming out of an abusive relationship.

@vulpinedeity33798 жыл бұрын
Really? To me it sounds too guttural like he's singing in the back of his throat and it hurts because he doesn't know how to properly access the head voice. Weird thing is, it even sounds like that in the lower notes. In what should be his base register.

The music industry look down more and more their audience (not completely unjustified) and push up more of those kind of singers.

Bless this review. The fact that people don’t realize that this song is condescending to the girl in this song infuriates me. Mendes sounds like every entitled guy that thinks that if he acts like he knows what’s best for you, you’ll immediately hop on his Johnson in appreciation.
