Pop Up Covid 19 Cycle Lane in Worthing - A24. Dashcam footage.

In August 2020 a temporary Pop Up Cycle Lane was introduced on the main A24 in Worthing. This is some dashcam footage showing the resulting congestion. Since this video was taken, a further stretch of cycle lane has been installed.
The journey was between 5pm and 5.30pm on a weekday - peak commuter time.
Since the lane was introduced, journey times have quadrupled. Congestion and Pollution have increased dramatically.
There is little evidence of cyclists using this lane.
The video has been sped up selectively, this 1.2 mile journey took 16 minutes. Note how as soon as the area with the cones is cleared, flow increases substantially.

From my experience of riding it during that time, I would agree that it was badly designed in terms of the junctions. I didn’t know if I was supposed to go through some of the bollards, or around them. But in terms of having a full lane, that was great. It was the first time I’ve cycled in Worthing and felt truly safe and not a second class citizen. I wouldn’t have minded them being removed, if they had been in place long enough to gather enough data that could then be used to build a permanent solution. But as it was, the drivers screamed and screamed, and got their way, as always. And once it was removed, it felt worse than ever after having something, to then go back to nothing. So I started riding at night, and then just stopped entirely. So congratulations.

Well driven and filmed sir. It hould be shown on South Today. How much did it cost to plan and install this non-sense ? The delay (and in places dangers) now facing car drivers and other road users is not helpfull to a struggling economy. The increased pollution levels in slow moving and static traffic benefits nobody particularly those inhaling more deeply whilst cycling !
