Even if you give him the benefit of the doubt with regards to the word used, he was literally complaining about "too many gay men" in the seminary. I think from this it's pretty clear that he has homophobic opinions internally, an apology in public for PR's sake won't change his true mind.

Why wouldn't he. Most clergy who were abusers suffered from same-sex attraction and abused boys.

One of the requirements for entering a seminary is that the man seeking to become a priest must bring several letters, each written by a woman, describing how he relates with women in general and individually. If the women's letters describe him as a normal heterosexual man, his chances of entering the seminary are far better than if he were homosexual. However, some homosexual men still manage to become priests, even though church law bans such men from becoming priests.

You realize that it’s not much about what he said. You said ppl will move on. But it shows that some ppl view others as less of a human simply for being different. It could have been you. But I take it you ever put yourself in ppls shoes you would know. By saying it’s ok they will live it’s enabling this behavior. ppl aren’t made of plaster we come with feelings and emotions too. If ppl said well he said that makes it ok. Then I will too.

Gay is considered an orientation or an inclination, not a sexual act itself. I think what they mean is that they don't want anyone in the priesthood who identifies as "gay" even if they are not acting on it.
