Matthew Goodwin makes me have faith in humanity again. At least a little.

My one major point of disagreement with Goodwin is his characterisation of this as a battle between individualist liberal democracy and the prioritisation of majority will. The problem with that is that the majority will is in favour of individual rights as far as I can see. It is the establishment itself that is illiberal, authoritarian and protects identity, not individa\ual rights. Personally, I am very much a populist and what motivates me is the desire for Britain to remain a liberal democracy where the rights of individuals, to speak their minds and to live without fear of an authoritarian government are respected. That Britain cannot exist where the country is treated as belonging to the world by authoritarian identitarians. I would like to see Britain as a genuine refuge for a limited number of refugees who genuinely have no other option and for those who have needed skills and are willing to respect the laws of the nation and the right to free expression of others. The left miss the point that respect for free speech protects minorities. The desire to reinstate respect for freedom of expression is not a cynical ploy as the left insists, it is a firmly held principle. He also totally mischaracterises the differences between Clinton and the "populists". Clinton is not a pragmatist. She is a bastardised mix between corporatism and ideological fervour and she is definitely authoritarian. It irritates me when the left proclaim Trump as an authoritarian danger to the free press because he, quite rightly, publicly attacks their lies while Obama went after the press using the DoJ to an unprecedented level.

Alistair Wardill Please, read Michael Lewis book ”The fifth risk”. Might make you understand what harmTrumps populism is doing to the liberal democratic institutions of the US.

It's always interesting to me to see how one side puts together a debate/discussion with itself and comes up with a solution that it believes the other side should follow, or how an agreement is made among them themselves why the other side believes what they believe.

Got those definitions the wrong way round Matthew! The “Pragmatic politic” is the conservative movement, the “Faith/Idealist politic” is the progressive movement; there is no classically liberal politic today.

I have no idea of whether climate change is due to human activity. However the given, logical reason that deniers are shut down is because if it might (turn out to be) true / proven then to have not taken corrective action may prove fatal (i.e. the safe option should be our default).

same reason you should believe in God and judgement day, just in case, only that's actually real and consequential, unlike the club of rome-created modern climate change con (nee global warming.)

Daz - its not about belief. Its about taking precautionary protective measures, or not, given the view of some scientists that we are at a tipping point. If you are not certain of the facts then err on the failsafe option. Seems reasonable but maybe just a convenient argument for one side.

If given a choice between public vs private schools, parents will ALWAYS choose private. Because government does a horrible job at everything.

I think you may be overthinking all of this. Democracy is nothing if not the pursuit of populism. Two sides run their chosen flags up the pole and wait to see who gets most salutes. I have not been hit by globalism but I voted to leave. I can see who is paying the price for globalism and I very much fear their survival response and its likely impact on us all when it comes.

Proportional Representation was the subject of a referendum in 2011 it lost by 68% to 32% So there will be no PR in UK.

Mass immigration is liberal expression of modern day slavery. Take the NHS for example. The NHS recruits poor people (predominantly of colour) to come to Britain to work, to serve the needs of the richer, predominantly white population, whilst paying the lowest wages that the law allows. And they wrap that process up in moralistic virtue. In reality, it has more in common with the Southern States of the North American Continent in the late 18th Century.
