The economic effects of technological advancement is being understated. There is a domino affect that is causing greater issues than is reported. It was stated that 3 million truck drivers would be out of a job with self driving trucks. That leads to 3 million+ meals not being eaten at truck stop cafes. This leads to lay offs of college students supporting their college education through waiting tables. This leads to more people unable to educate themselves for the new tech jobs. This increases the gab between the haves and have nots, creating an even bigger divide in the nation. Not to mention that most technology jobs are in large urban areas and rural areas rely on the trucking industry for economic stability. This is becoming an issue of urban wants versus rural needs. This is what American politicians are not seeing. Education doesn't help you if there are no jobs in your town. Some may say that people just need to move to the city. Well, can the cities handle a mass influx of people?

Sure there will still be some customers but many of these places probably live off the truckers. It is the price of a modernizing economy and a better standard of living and it has been happening since the industrial revolution. Yes truck drivers will lose their jobs, but think about this. If you were a shipping company would you rather have a continuous year round costs in labor, or pay for manufactured labor that is much more cheap and efficient? This is a good thing! The costs of shipping will go down which mean more money can be spent in other places, shipping companies can invest in other businesses which means better and cheaper products and the overall American economy will be improved. Advancement isn't some politically motivated unAmerican idea. It is what makes us strong.

That's exactly what happened with the industrial revolution, many, many people ended up suffering a lot with the drastic changes. The reason populism has flared is because the political and media elites have become so disconnected with the suffering of those impacted by automation(and globalization as well but of course the Economist will underplay that for obvious ideological reasons) that those people are rebelling through democratic institutions. Oliver, while I agree with you, this documentary feels like nothing but mumbling against a crushing defeat. Every media outlet that's given up on the full-on liberal propaganda has shifted the gear to this other milder approach, going poetic and unspecific, even nihilistic, bittersweet envision of the future, because they can't argue anymore about the present. Populism and demagoguery are a fact, in south america we are having a lot of trouble because of this. In Colombia, for example, they say the system is wrong (which is true) but they can't think about real solutions, as a result we had a pause of 2 months for the end of a half-century war and renegotiation came to nothing much different because they had no arguments... The problem is that people with a low education often believe them just because their frustration is represented in their speech so the only way to fight these charismatic leaders is educating people and punishing the elites voting for new options, but real options.

I am a little too, just because it gives lots of room for whoever is in charge to play games with such an income in government. I'm more for forcing businesses to compensate with shares along with wage and salaries that produce a dividend as a method to provide incomes to people. Meaningful amount of shares. Perhaps they can't be just sold for cash, but traded only, and those shares provide incomes. Of course that would rock the apple carts of the oligarchs. But the system is about blow up the apple cart as it stands anyway. A universal income wouldn't be extremely bad. But a share system would probably be better. And even coop agreements for basic goods like homes and apartments. You don't pay to a 3rd party that's just trying suck maximize profits and doesn't give a rats ass about the quality of the place, but has a living stake in keeping it nice because they live there too. Mix of a shares and wage compensation, co-op, and universal basic income system will inevitably be the solutions especially as automation becomes that of Futurama. Seriously, you have robots that repair the robots. You don't need human labor whatsoever at that point.

+killman369547 The alternative is people are poor and jobless as automation continues to displace more jobs than it creates (because unlike big technological innovations in the past which would create new jobs in the same supply chain or open up a new supply chain run by people, almost every supply chain can now be automated aside from a few skilled technicians and engineers and a few other highly skilled positions). But I agree about the concern regarding not voting out the "hand that feeds you" and state control. It's too much power concentrated in too few hands to be a good idea to completely centralize it. However, most effective countries with strong social nets create those programs away from the levers of government so that they can function somewhat autonomously (with the understanding that, if they're ineffective, government has the power to reform them). I think this is the model we need to keep in mind. It's not perfect, but I think it's probably the best option we have on the table.

Actually with border security and reduced migration, many of the so-called jobs that Americans could have filled remained empty. That's bc most migrants take jobs that Americans don't want. For instance in 2011, after the market crash and unemployment reached an all time high, there were 6,200 open farm jobs in North Carolina and only 256 applied, but only 7 worked. That's bc we live in the Information Age and most millenials are college-educated & tech savvy. They're more likely to seek jobs that reflect their education & that offer esteemed title or status. Nobody aspires to be a farm hand anymore. In the Industrial Age, not many baby boomers were as educated. They were more likely to do labor than to work in an office. Farm work requires skill that demands stamina from dawn til dusk. Many migrants are incredibly skilled & most certainly have the stamina, even traveling hundreds of miles to obtain work. This proves that they don't steal jobs, they fill a very real gap in many labor industries. Most of these will go to automation. But in the meantime, border restrictions have led to farms closing down, bc they can't compete against corporate farms that churn out more yield with automated machinery. And the best part is that these workers are taxed, yet can't reap the benefits of those taxes. It's basically free money that goes directly to the American ppl for programs like Social Security, Infrastructure, Public Safety, etc. We're idiots for closing down the borders bc that was money we could've used. Now Social Security is depleting and programs like the ones for Veterans and Medicare are dwindling. We completely misunderstood the value that migrants brought to our economy. Any money we paid them to work is most certainly not going to anyone else now. No millenial is going to do labor when they lack the skills to do so, especially if they can more easily make money online from their couch. We're dreaming if we think the old workforce of the Industrial Age is alive & kicking. It died when the Internet was born. Technology is our economic future. Get used to it.

Technological advancements have benefited humans in the past. Look at the Industrial revolution. Although millions lost their jobs, our overall life quality has gotten better. At the same time, although we've gotten healthier and our life expectancy has risen, millions of people did lose their jobs, they were sacrificed for our well being, this we shouldn't forget. I understand peoples outrage against these rapid changes that threaten their jobs and income, but shouldn't we focused on softening their transition. Shouldn't we discuss policies that benefit this transition, from manual labor to automation? Like reeducation Programs, banning companies from firing veteran workers and having the workers do the same tasks the robots do? At the same time I'm wondering what should we and our children learn for the future, what should we prepare for, so that we can work and have an income? Or will we live in a Utopia where people won't have to work anymore, where robots take over our activities - and we benefit of their labor? I personally don't think that Utopia will come until, let's say 100 - 200 years, so I still need to know what should I teach my kids, so that my grand-grand-grand children will get to live in the before mentioned Utopia.
