The primary dopaminergic culprit in addiction is downregulation of the D2 receptor. Unfortunately, the only way to upregulate this receptor is to impose a physiological need for upregulation. This can be accomplished by decreased dopamine signaling (removing sources of dopamine synthesis) or via receptor blockade with antipsychotics. I strongly recommend against the latter, so the best thing you can do while recovering (and in general) is to remove as many non-productive sources of dopamine synthesis as possible. Less social media, less mindless internet browsing, less phone-checking, less gaming, less junk food, etc. If you drink coffee/alcohol or smoke marijuana, you may want to cut back or stop altogether if you can. You still want to train your brain to respond to positive stimuli, such as those Trish discusses in this video, but you really want to cut out any sources of pleasure that don't contribute to long-term joy and fulfillment.

Came across your channel 2 weeks ago in a period of using porn (multiple times) daily to feel good/find relief. I was very depressed with suicidal thoughts which i never had before.. Even when I had sex in real life I was thinking about that it would be better to just help myself. I also got impulsive thoughts and wanted to do crazy things in real life because of porn. I think it can trigger wanting to cheat or other types of risky behaviors . Its so destructive, and unfortunately so normalized , i know 16 year olds with “pornhub” phonecases. Because of your videos i realized it was all because of the porn that i was feeling this bad, i quit immediately no masturbation , i feel a lot better already clear in my head not going back the temporary relief isn’t worth it Thank you DR

Heres a conundrum for ya: I've already developed a life I don't want to escape from MOST of the time, yet I'm still struggling to stop. I already work out more than anyone I know. I use music to mood regulate on the regular. I eat quite healthy the majority of the time. I do my own form of brain training, studying & researching every day. Unfortunately intimacy is not possible for me. Maybe that will change, but at present, it's not looking like it. It's actually my biggest point of contention. That is literally the only part of my life I despise. If I'm escaping at all, it's from THAT! ....... and of course, what I use to escape (porn) is the one thing that'll make sure I'm alone for the rest of my damn life......

I don't get it. If PMO causes dopamine receptor down regulation wouldn't dopamine replenishing activity only add to the down regulation of dopamine? Please make this make sense to me. Please MAKE A VIDEO ON HOW TO UPREGULATE DOPAMINE RECEPTORS
@OrlandoAponte2 жыл бұрын
I actually just posted a comment about this. If you scroll through the more recent comments, you'll find it. There's no way to upregulate your dopamine receptors other than to remove sources of excess dopamine signaling. The other option is antipsychotics, but I don't recommend them for a multitude of reasons.
@Brownnproud912 жыл бұрын
@@OrlandoAponte so then if they can't upregulate then how do we even heal?
@Brownnproud912 жыл бұрын
@@OrlandoAponte I had a long time addiction to PMO. Until it started causing serious mental health problems and when I quit it caused physical problems. I now feel desensitized and habe muscle ridgity. I had tremors at some point to. I'm at half a year of NOFAP I want to know how long is this healing thing take for one to feel NORMAL again and symptom free.
@OrlandoAponte2 жыл бұрын
@@Brownnproud91 Dopamine receptors will upregulate naturally over time with abstinence, but there's no way to artificially speed up the process (that we know of) other than with antipsychotics and/or minimizing dopaminergic signaling in general. The symptoms you're describing sound Parkinsonian, so I would get checked out by a neurologist. In healthy people, dopamine neurons don't typically die off at an accelerated rate unless it's due to excitotoxicity-induced apoptosis. This tends to occur with highly dopaminergic drugs such as methamphetamine and cocaine. As far as I know, there's no evidence of excitotoxicity occurring with pornography, and the numerous anecdotal accounts of full recovery after prolonged abstinence seem to corroborate this. I made it to 6 months once and felt significantly better than I did when I started, but wasn't back to normal yet. I would hang in there and rule out any sort of pathology by seeing a doctor.
@Brownnproud912 жыл бұрын
@@OrlandoAponte I saw a neurologist 3 different ones actually and they all ruled out parkinsons. I told them my story and all but one said it was a dopamine dysregulation. All the others said it was "anxiety". I did a brain MRI as well and it came back normal. But my addiction was PMO for over 15 years daily

Music hells yah, played music most of my life! It's therapy!! Love helping others learn to play also! 3. Eating healthy. yep. Love me my Funky Monkey PB and banana protein smoothie! Although, have to be careful with saying what foods contain dopamine or serotonin as in certain forms they can't cross the blood-brain barrier. 4. I was using Muse and became frustrated with connection issues and found contrary to claim, it disturbed my sleep. I find it would be best for someone with little experience with meditation. But I may try a different model. Thank you for the discount link. 5. physical touch/intimacy is what i miss most as a single man. I'd like there to be a dating app just for this! :D
