This was a very thorough and informative lecture... Not only was the past history of the Romani tragic and filled with horrors, but their present situation in Europe is one of discrimination and disenfranchisement. This needs to end- education is the key... there is so much misinformation out there, one needs to take it upon themselves to learn about this fascinating and vibrant culture and eradicate stereotypes.

There’s a profound irony that Dr Hancock is speaking about racism, yet he uses an extremely broad ethnic origin as “Asian” leaving the audience to assume the Roma are from anywhere from Armenia to Siberia and south to Iran and India. But genetically and linguistically we know the origin, India (as in pre partition India which was much broader geographically). I mean he didn’t even say “south Asian” so raises interest in Roma’ views of south Asians… shame.

I think mentioning the slavery period of the romani (which lasted for nearly 5 centuries- one of the most, if not, THE longest period of slavery in the documented history) in Romania would've been worth mentioned as you were talking about romani's early history. I think it pretty much set up the scene and put a limit to their opportunities right from the beginning (since it started at the end of the 14th century, the approximate period in which they arrived in Walachia, now Romania, land).

Thank you for spreading awareness, it's crazy how little talk is about the Gypsy genocide, more importantly it wasn't just burning gypsies.... For example they used to rip of women's hair with their skin and than asked them to clean it... Also made them wash themselves with soaps made from their children... After revealing that most of the gypsies immediately died knowing that they washed their bodies with their own children.

The irony of Nazi racism is that the Germans themselves were not and never have been “Arians “ but Romani people are Arians by their language and their Northwestern Indian origin. Arians being the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European family, I never understood how the hell the Germans got the pretenties of being “Arians” ??? There is so much linguistic, cultural and historical evidence of the northwestern Indian (especially Rajasthani and Sindhi) origin of the Romani family . I myself speaking Kurdish and Persian and having some basic knowledge of Hindi can make myself understood by most Eastern European Roma, by using the the most basic words of this languages with the grammatical structure of Hindi. When I went to Rajasthan the cultural resemblance, clothes and favourite colours, music, dance became undeniably obvious. Also historically one part of Roma were originally Rajput warriors that got separated from the the rest in a battle against the numerous raids of Mahmoud Ghaznavi into India . Thus they belonged to Chatriya, the warrior cast . Another earlier group of Roma migrated into the Persian empire on request of the Sasanian king Khosrow Parviz who asked an Indian king to send him a few thousand musicians, dancers and acrobats . This is narrated in the Shahnameh, the Iranian epic. When I see how Roma people get treated in Hungary and Rumania still at this very moment, my heart breaks , knowing that they are such a talented and noble people.

I must add that the Roma were shuttle slaves in Rumania until 1884 !!!!!!! Roma have undergone such horrible mistreatment since they left the Byzantine empire , that a very deep trauma has deeply shaken their self esteem, knowing the glorious part of their history will definitely enhance their confidence in their culture, they also have an incredible vitality and joy of life which helped them through all the persecutions . Thank you for this much needed lecture. (I'm the daughter and granddaughter -- niece, cousin....-- of Jewish Holocaust victims and survivors.) Finally, there is some recognition and remembrance of the Roma Holocaust in Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary (my ancestral home(s)). But unfortunately, so many videos in these languages are full of hateful, racist comments. Very sad.
