Correction: the Spyder RS featured in this video does not have the Weissach package.
I've never driven a Porsche Spyder I didn't love. There's something special about their more road focused intentions compared to hardcore Porsche GT cars. But with the latest 718 Spyder RS, let's see whether Porsche's taken the Spyder recipe too far, and if it's worth the massive premium over a 718 Spyder or the much older 987.2 Boxster Spyder.
See how I rank the cars I've reviewed in my Zygrene Performance Index (ZPI): bit.ly/3Vo0Idd

3000 miles into it with my Spyder RS and it’s an incredible car. Especially great here in SoCal. Have owned quite a few GT Porsches and this is my favorite. It could be even better if it had three pedals but the PDK is crisp and sharp … I don’t think I miss it all that much haha. It’ll go down as one of the greatest cars Porsche has ever built.

Cheers! For a double Spyder owner this was a sweeet comparison. Should have driven the 981 Spyder (perhaps instead of the 718), though. It has a stock soundtrack to match the aftermarket exhaust in the 987. The 981 Spyder weighs also around 75 kg (1315 kg) less than the 718 Spyder. But of course, great cars the 987 Spyder and the 718 Spyder too! My next Spyder might well be the 987.

13:22 The Weissach package doesn't add the magnesium wheels on the GT4RS or Spyder RS. You need to spend and additional $16k on the magnesium wheels on top of the $14k Weissach package which pretty much just gives you exposed carbon bits (but it looks cool). Also I just watched Matt Farah's 3 way Porsche Spyder comparison video as well as Throttle House Spyder RS video and this is the perfect follow up video to those. Would have been great if you had a 987.2 Spyder vs a 981 Spyder and the 718 Spyder/Spyder RS compared.

Its a Spyder and second the latest Porsches are better hands down otherwise Porsche would not built them. For me the best Spyder for sure is the 718 as it has all the GT4 stuff what the 987 lacks, more comparable to the 987 Boxster S what are great cars to.

@leonardoluc6362 he said 981, the 2016. Not the 2011 987. It's not even a close competition between 981 and 982, 987 is a very distant 4th
@wrefordmiles
@wrefordmiles Ай бұрын
@@KArione-z2kdistant 4th by what measure or viewpoint ? Of course a 718RS being a newer car will score higher on several aspects but scored on driving enjoyment those that have experienced it recognise that the 987.2 Spyder offers something equal or more to many current alternatives and for a 4th of the price. Evo magazine retested the 987.2 Spyder in 2020, gave it 5 stars and summarised y saying “I can’t with confidence say I’ve enjoyed another Porsche more” Of course if you were hypothetically presented with a line up of all the Spyders and you were asked which one you’d take, you’d go for the RS. But if you could only take the 987.2 (which is the real world reality for many people) those that know smile in the knowledge that when you’re on that empty, challenging backroad with no one to impress but yourself you will be having as much if not more enjoyment. A distant 4th is for hypothetical chatting, in the real world the 987.2 Spyder despite now being 12 years old is right up there if your measure/viewpoint is driving enjoyment
@KArione-z2k
@KArione-z2k Ай бұрын
@@wrefordmiles By first hand experience. The RS is obviously the top dog. I put (and so do many many others) the 981 above the 718. The 3.8L is just better. The suspension, the body lines, the absence of black plastic, the 3 ecu options, and honestly sapphire blue. There is a reason 718 GT4CS uses the 3.8 and not the 4.0. The 718 as may flaws as it has in comparison, is still miles ahead of the 987. Ok it has car play, thats it, but ther 981 has bluetooth and you can add bluetooth to a 987. I once had a 987.1 with a sharkwerks RS370 build that would run circles around the spyder and was able to do all the trim the same way minus the humps (because I didnt want to buy the deck lid). The 987 just isnt special, its just a dressed up S. I've driven all 4 plus the RS60 spyder edition 987.1 aka the bastard spyder.

Nice video….I have a 2010 manual 987.2 2.9L, full SOUL exhaust (comp catless headers, two way exhaust valve), Softronics ECU tune, BMC air cleaner, and Numerics shifter and cables. The SOUL system and other mods make a huge difference in the sound, aggressiveness and fun factor. Plan to add a GT3 brake master cylinder. I paid $35K for this CPO car (mods another ~$7K) w/27k miles. Currently the car has 145k miles. It is my only car, I drive it every day for errands and mostly FUN. Great and interesting comparison. Not sure if you’re aware the 718 Spyder holds the world slalom record 47.5 sec. I did a track day at a tight circuit and this car was the fastest of the day beating much more powerful cars. It was 3 seconds quicker than my base 981 Cayman which was stock apart from an X73 rear roll bar.

My 987.2 has the factory sport shift, it’s very good as is. I also have the factory sports exhaust and to be honest when making progress I keep it on quite, yes on occasion it’s nice to hear more noise but for me the 987.2 is about driving and if you’re cracking on a bit I don’t need the extra noise or more importantly want to draw attention to myself. Onto the stock brakes, one of the benefits of a 987.2 is a great driving experience for a relatively low cost of ownership staying stock and steel rather than carbon ceramics helps with that. Stock steel do feel soft but they do work and once you get use to them you start to see the benefit when on a bumpy, downhill wet road and you find a need to get speed off with control (track use might be different, but from experience on poor, wet tight backroads I’m very happy) Saving the big point to last - For me the 987.2 is all about driving experience, it’s a small car that you feel very connected to and that includes your connection to the outside with the roof off or as tested here with just the top cap on (and in a wet UK with just the top cap on is quite often) - This comparison video even picks up the difference between the 987.2 and later Spyders here, in the 718 you enter a safety and comfort first wrap round experience it may not be that noticeable when coming from your daily driver as you need to get into a 987.2 to really feel that enhanced openness and connection. 981/718 are close to modern cars the 987.2 has a touch of classic feel about it. Don’t get be wrong though, I’d like a 718 RS but it would be in addition to my 987.2 Spyder 😊

That 987 really needs some proper wheels. Even OEM ones are great but those 997.1 Turbo style ones are not it. I worry those are heavy as well. Also correction here this Spyder RS does NOT have the Weissach Package. You can tell because the intakes are not carbon fiber, and the seats don't have the logo on the headrests. The wheels are also the base wheel and not the magnesium Y spoke wheel (which I believe is still optional with Weissach unlike on the GT3 RS).

For today the spyder RS is the king of the 3 no questions about it, but has quirks which is digestible (drony for some, powerful for street (which 99% you would be driving not more than 10% throttle) to behave like everyone around you). The white spyder is the perfect selection one, it has the balance of everything, and shows mild porsche character and elegant lines to be the top cruiser (since we are talking cabriolets)

Great review as always. For me, all these cars are achingly close to perfect, but none of them actually are. The 987 is close, but maybe not special enough and eclipsed from a capability point of view by the other two. The 718 has inferior steering, and the RS doesn't have a manual gearbox and clutch! With their next cars being hybrid of EV, I would really have hoped that Porsche would have made Spyder perfection with one of these cars. I think the 987 makes the most sense. I'd prefer any GT3 over the 718s.

The brake pedal feel comes largely from the brake master cylinder, fluid and pad coefficient of friction - there is virtually no benefit changing out the Porsche brake callipers and rotors on any of their cars. The tires contact patch governs how well a car stops. Also very little benefit of a tune on a Porsche NA engine.

@@Ryem3 That's silly mate, a sub-100K plaid is faster than both your Artura and Huracan, but that doesn't make it a better car. Also there is no way that the Spyder RS would feel slow compared to your Huracan, it feel roughly the same, maybe even the sensation of speed might be greater because of the sound and feel, and any real difference in speed would come at high speed. Also also talking value while owning a McLaren is hilarious considering they're terminal in both reliability and resale value. Also also also none of those are track cars, but Spyder RS is probably the best for that as well. Also also also also you could buy your Huracan experience for 1/2 price with R8 performance if you want the best value. It's easily a $200K+ car now, and as more people get to know it, outside of talking shit online, they'll continue to climb. It's as fast as a Ferrari Enzo, sounds like a literal racecar, and has one of the most perfect interiors alongside superb reliability, and extendable warranty to 15 years/200K km. Assuming the world moves in the same direction as it is moving now - electrification and stricter CO2 norms, it will go down as one of the best cars ever made.

I had to do a double take on the 987. It reminded me of an RX8 at lower rpms with that header setup. Very cool.

I know a few things about these Porsche. Own a 996 c4; and 981 Spyder; Germany based. When it comes to this comparison I d like to share my thoughts with you: designwise 718 Spyder beats 981 except for the headlights in my opinion. Those e better with the 981. overall the engine sound concerning the 981 that is especially here in Europe a bit tighter emissions regulations bla bla.. 981 has no particle filter… so it sounds better than the 718. handling cornering ect 718 more fun. But when you go by emotions…. And this is the car you throw around serpentines the alps or country roads…. 981 is by stock what you want.. and now here is another truth and pay attention… the 987 was a low spec then…. Nowadays you pay ridiculous money for a just cleaned out car… to me 987 towards the end of the production line… sports exhaust oem whatever… that’s it for me. In time the crackling noise also with the 991 until I guess 2016 .. somewhere yall know what I mean… even with the cabriolet gts… same engine sound kinda… I kinda got tired of it… its just not real … I m kinda starting to finding annoying especially it reninds me of the DSG clutch in a golf vw gti that time and era… but I know high complains. In a way … I think the high pitch noise of the 718 rs spyder is delicate and won’t be annoying in time. So in the end… when u r new to the idea u want a Spyder… I think u will fans 981 for a rusher long period… in the end…‘it should come down to 718 spyder rs or 987 spyder. Fix the exhaust and climb the mountain passages …. Also.. the design.. it’s perfect . Whatcha get outta of this? The comparison is kinda weird here tho.. 981 should have been in here. Thanks for puttin in the work tho in makin this video. Drive safe yall

Those wheels on the 987 Spyder were never an option as the Spyder had other wheels. Those are the 997 Turbo design wheels which are possibly the ugliest wheels ever designed by Porsche (and they also look very wrong a Spyder). The original Spyder wheels looked great so I see no reason to change them for these ones.

Slightly confused about calling the deafening exhaust blare from the 987 a "flat six howl". If anything loud exhausts like that reduce the flat sixness. The flat six 'howl' is induction based, not. exhaust blare based.

Ughhh... No. Induction noise doesnt really matter on the configuration of the 6 cylinders. Its just sucking it in has zero zero zero zero to do woth engine lay out. What he daid is correct.

@@technom3598 Ugghhh, yes. Flat sixes have a very distinct induction howl. But thanks for your input!

"no underbody guide fins" ? There are! It's exactly the same as the GT4RS. Even the partnumber is the same. #9GT807913 (I have it on mine) BTW there is plenty of understeer when you don't put the rear swaybar into the hard-hard position, and have the max -2 degreees camber in the front.
