If you slam slicks on the road car, the springs will be too soft, if you slam semis on the track car, the springs will be too hard. But let’s assume same tires: 200kg less, more downforce, better weight distribution, better dampers(not stiffness, damper technology!) and I believe different suspension geometry/technology. Tires are a big factor, but the road version will be properly slower.

The greatest advantage the Cup car had was for sure the slick tires, which can give you a 1-3 second advantage per lap and with some cars even 5 seconds per lap. The 190 kg plus weight penalty also hurts the RS.

That is phenomenal. I recall seeing Patrick Long testing the new at the time Carrera GT vs. his GT3 Cup car at Laguna, and the cup car was nearly 10 seconds faster (on slicks) than the Carrera GT. The GT3 RS is a monster.

@@ALMX5DP cup cars are usually on michelin slicks. Of course there are qualifying slicks, but usually they are more durable. Cup 2R however, gets very close to slick performance, albeit for the first 2 minutes. That's why a fresh set of tires makes such a difference for a lap record. There is a very big drop off after a few minutes of lapping.

@ my point was just that I don’t think we know enough to draw any conclusions. How many minutes were each tire set used before this hot lap? What were each tire sets carcass temp or pressures? How new were the tires in terms of previous miles driven? What were their date codes and how were they stored if over a season or year old? I mean for all we know the Cup2s were brand new and freshly heat cycled with just a couple of laps to get consistent pressures and temps right? Maybe it’s possible too that set of tires was hooned by Chris Harris for 10 laps with only 1/32nd worth of tread remaining before Fifth Gear got some sloppy seconds? Maybe somewhere in between?

@@ALMX5DP fifth gear don't go thru the same kind of geeky tests that other publications do. So i'm pretty sure it's just 1 cup 2s tire for the test, and that's it. similar tests have been done at other tracks, with more serious testing parameters. The cup car is of course quicker. Tho, I think if the road car was completely stripped of everything that was unneeded, it may be very close.

lol. 4.4 seconds is a freaking eternity on a track that short. Thats approx a 6% difference. We fight for 0.4sec and this is 4.4 sec?!?!?! I guess 4 sec doesnt sound that large, if you don't race, but come on! Thats a pretty similar to comparing a new 993 GT3 with PDK on Cup2R tires to a 997 Carrera S (Nurburgring times) on old tech tires and the old, slower/rougher course. The BIG miss in this situation is that you are running racing rubber on one and street on the other. That's over a second right there. You're never going to make up that 440lb weight delta.

Its because all that aero added to compensate for the weighty homologation bloat is only effective in higher speed corners. 🫤 In low-mid speed corners on its semi-slick tires, the GT3 RS is probably just a great handling road car.

For the record, the 992 GT3 RS is slower round Anglesey Coastal than the 991.2 GT3 RS (1:11.20) the 991 GT2 RS (also 1:11.20) and about the same as the GT4 RS (1:12.44). The Cup car is about on par being 3 to 4s a minute quicker than a 992 GT3 RS. The 991 series GT3 touring and 991.2 GT3 RS are peak Porsche.

@@Top_Gear_Clips_Central The driver is a former professional BTCC driver. Who has done "1000s" of laps at Anglesey. In my view this shows the reality of the 992 GT3 RS e.g. its within the performance envelope of the 991.2 GT3 RS and the 991 GT2 RS. I drove all three at a local circuit (slow-med) and they were within 1s of each other per minute. In my view the car has been marketed. PS I've owned plenty of Porsche sports cars, did 5 seasons of Cup and still own a 991.2 GT3 RS - I passed on the 992 GT3 RS, because although technically very good, it didn't really offer any more than the 991.2 GT3 RS in the real world and was compromised by a lack of frunk. For the price tag - I went for a 296 GTB instead, which I'm very happy with.

GT3 spec cars are much faster, this year the fastest lap at the 24 hours of Spa was set by a Lamborghini Huracan GT3 during qualifying: 2:14.903. By comparison at the Porsche Supercup event the fastest lap was a 2:20.058.

I think the bit reviews are missing is that the rs is now doing race car speeds but has all the junk that costs $$$ if accident happens and is missing all the safety gear of the race car. Look at the dif in this vid, that someone can go at that speed with no safety gear is too high risk imo. I think Porsche needs to go all in and do as a cs but with rego plates. Please 🙏

People used to do that with the 996 GT3s, but Porsche got wise, there are so many things on the Cup car spec that are not road legal (built in air Jack's, no handbrake, no ventilation/heater, no door locks), there is also a hatch in the roof to allow a spinal board to be used if the driver needs one for extraction.

No offense to commenters but half of you are blindfully ignorant and it's clear have never driven either. I will leave this here for whoever wants information that is correct regarding the matter. First. Yes the cup car is on slicks. You cannot just put slicks on the 992RS. especially not the CUP car tyre. Furthermore you cannot just slap the 992RS tyre on the cup car. Second. 992RS even WITH the suspension adjustment via electronics is JUST A SMALL WINDOW. At no extreme of the electronics can you get the suspension stiff enough without the physical changes. Third. The Cup car HAS NO ABS AND NO TCS. The road car does. No matter how GOOD of a driver the journalist is, he will ALWAYS be closer to the limit in the 992RS because of all the HELP available. 992 CUP car you are on your own. This is the MAIN reason why track day people struggle with buying a cup car instead of tracking an RS. Fourth. Before anything, the 992RS would have benefited more from a track alignment than any other change. It would be the first thing to do if you are tracking the 992RS and don't drive too far to get to the circuit.

This feels like typical Porsche marketing. The aero package works well on high speed circuits like Spa, Silverstone on N'ring (because downforce is proportional the velocity squared) but much less well on slower circuits like Anglesey coastal. The 992 GT3 RS is a great technical car but real world is at best marginally quicker than a 991.2 GT3 RS on the same tires. The GT3 RS is not a Supercar. All modern 911s are high volume production cars - the numbers of GT division cars produced these days are very significant.

Not really. Did a track day recently on low spec track and rs was within .4sec of 992cup car on greens. The car is genuinely amazing and if u haven’t driven one on limit it might seem like marketing but it is not - it’s the real deal

@@Alandiversi I have drive one at the limit. Thats my point, my 991.2 Cup was over 3 seconds quicker per lap at the same circuit and the difference between the the 991 GT2 RS, 992 GT3 and 991.2 GT3 RS was a second at the same circuit (where a lap is just over a minute).
