Mehran Haq You’re testing the memory banks here. As I recall there was not. Most of the changes to the 930 happened when it was reintroduced to the US market, primarily for emissions regulations. It still had the four speed transmission. It was more civilized but it could still bite you in the rump if you got careless or ran out of talent. I believe the last year in the US was 1989 and that did have a five speed.

Ah this brings back memories! Especially the sound.. I remember borrowing an '85 4-speed version of the turbo from my employer in my early twenties. What a boy's dream. I remember the clutch being more like an on/off switch and the first time i took it out i spinned out right away on a wet road when the turbo kicked in while trying to get some power out of the engine. A few years ago i traced down the car to a Porsche club here in Holland and got the current owner's info. If i ever get the room to store it properly i will adopt her. I just have to remember to bring an extra pair of undies for my first drive.
@byf438 жыл бұрын
Excellent video. Loved the detail showing the rev counter to demonstrate the turbo lag. The interior of a 911 is actually quite durable and yes the doors are heavy and feel solid. The pedals you get used to. They're part of the car's identity. The thermostat regulated ventilation system is not unique for the Turbo. It was in the non turbo cars as well. It was first introduced in 1978 models. The round door knobs were there to make it harder to break into the car. When the car is locked the doorlock pins disappear into the door trim. That way a thief would have to reach further into the car to open in. When I sit in a 911 I instantly feel "at home". The car is a bit strange compared to other more normal cars but everything in it is well thought through and well made. And when you hear the deep roar mixed with the sound of the aircooling fan it's wonderful. In spite of the non adjustable steering wheel the seating position is good. Thanks for a great video.

This is such a great video of the 930. It's my dream to own one of these someday. Would you recommend getting a 70s non-intercooled one or a late model 930 like yours? Which one do you think is more fun to drive?
@harrysgarage9 жыл бұрын
Michael Klein Best value are the 3.3litre Coupe versions, 78-88, a 5-speed like mine carries a slight premium. Early 3.0litre, non-intercooled 930 are now collector items and priced accordingly. They are a bit lighter than a 3.3 930 but the turbo delivery is even baggier. The only reason I'd pick one over a 3.3 is for investment reasons, rather than how it drives.

bcsngan well said, when i look at most of today's rich and fabulous' garage and house pictures, you see multiple ferraris, a rolls royce, and a lambo, that just shows that these people only care about flash and cash, rather than the engineering feat of the vehicle. I understand its a matter of taste and opinion, but the rich have no taste, and no value for money... another example, i give a lot more respect and attention to someone driving a BMW M5 than someone in a gallardo.

Great review. Ive had my '88 930 for 13yrs and I still mix up the sunroof switch for the mirror toggle switch. The opening/closing of a 930 door is something of legend with the sound it makes -- like a rifle bolt. I can assure everyone its not an urban myth. The 4-spds up through '88 were notchier than the G50, but the gears are so long you hardly have to shift. Third gear will take you from 30mph to 130mph.

Brilliant Harry. When mentioning the death of the duck tail as sad, I think its extraordinary they managed to come up with something as great looking as the also iconic 'Whale tail'. I'm a motorcyclist myself, but my word were these cars gorgeous.

Dear Sir Harry, the very reason that the later famous Ferdinand Porsche thought of having an engine in the back of the car, is not - as you suggest - to have a compact power-unit and lots of interiorspace for the occupants, but... young Ferdinand was an apprentice engineer at the pre-war Tatra factory in Kopřivnice, in the region Moravia of TsechoSlovakia. Now situated in Czech Republic, near the border of Slovakia, and the region where my darling wife comes from. Ferdinand had a few very talented teachers at Tatra that were pioneers of building cars with air-cooled rear-engines, just think of the famous Tatra-plan. Not a shy person, Ferry 'borrowed' their designs in the pre-war years to present a 'KdF-wagen' ( Kraft-durch-Freude ) to a certain Mr. A. Hitler, himself a lover of automobiles. This Mr. H. gave permission to Mr. Porsche to start manufacturing prototypes of the KdF wagen, later to be well-known as the People's Car, or Volkswagen. The rest, as they say, is history and led in the end to the 911, of which I am a proud owner too! Mine is a 1982 Carrera SC, 3.0 and pre-G50 gearbox. Just some facts: Porsche GmbH paid patent fees to Tatra ( now Skoda) until 1972 I am told for using their basic designs. Ferdinand Porsche was born in - now - Vratislavice, before the war known as Maffersdorf. That is about 6 km. from our home in Liberec, CZ. His family Porsche tombe on the local cemetary is visited by me and some 911 friends every year. You are very kindly invited to come along next year with your gorgeous 911 Turbo. You'll love the driving here in Ceská Republika. Love your channel and way of no-nonsense presenting. Keep it up!

Reminds me of my childhood. My dad had a 87 930, 89 930 targa turbo. 83 Ferrari 512bbi and a 89 lambo 25th anniversary countach. I loved them all. But the 930 was my favorite. Great memories

I saw a convertible, low mileage, 930 Turbo reach $1.5 million at a Sotheby's auction. The rare car market has plateaued. It must have. Great insight into the car's failings, not a gushing promo' vlog like so many are. Good work.
