Porsche 944 Dash Upgrade | Early 944 Gauge Swap

In this video, I will show you how to remove and replace all of the gauges in an early Porsche 944, including the center console. This task is a bit different because you have to remove the steering wheel and the stocks to do it, but it is quite easy compared to a modern car. I also take time to replace the bulbs with LEDs as I like the look.

For the center stack adding an extra ground to the stud below the center speaker helps improve the gauge accuracy and reliability.

Yeah wow! This is soooo exactly me last week. 😀 But I removed all the switches and handles as well, to proper clean all the contacts and stuff. 🙂

You can also swap the speedo and tach to put the tach front and center, which is pretty nice for track use. If you're someone that enjoys that. BTW, careful with LED lights, especially taillights as the Cruise Control monitors the resistance on the brake lights and won't work with the lower resistance of the LED bulbs.

Once you add some resistors to the turn signal circuit they will work, but I agree, adding LEDs can be tricky in some areas.

Hey! Very helpful video, but do you have to remove all of the components(such as the heater controls) in the center to remove the top center gauge cluster? If so how do you go about doing that? Thank you, my oil pressure light is out and I want to replace it.

No, the heater controls and radio can stay, they were removed by a previous owner, an I have not got around to fixing it yet...the top center cluster is its own thing.

Hey! I recently bought a 1984 porsche 944 base, and I wanna replace the gauge custer and center console, with a better not cracked OEM version where did you find those parts? Also any idea where I can find tuen signal and windshield wiper stalks?

Are you talking about the dash itself? Because I don't know how the gauges would be cracked. If you are looking for a dash I would go with a cover because the acual dash itself is like 1.5k. If you are ok with used parts, I usually go to Plyhammers Parts. The owner of Plyhammers Parts buys wrecked or salvaged 944s and parts them out online for very reasonable prices. I believe I have seen the stalks you are looking for on his website.

Hey so I just went about and replaced all my gauge lights with the same ones as yours but my chunky white lights in my left gauge don’t come on with all my other lights. Any suggestions?

They are polarity sensitive, so you will unfortunately have to take them out and flip them around...I made this mistake as well.

LS Engines do in fact fit and multiple people have done them, and as for transmission, I would go with the AGR trans from a 944s. It is a still a transaxle so it will maintain 50/50 weight distribution.
