If you look at the side of the alternator where the long bolt goes, you'll see that it has a steel bushing stuck into the aluminum housing, and the threads that long bolt goes into are actually tapped into that bushing. One of the keys to reinstalling the alternator is to knock the bushing out a millimeter or so, so that it's no longer an interference fit. It'll move back into place when you tighten the bolt. Hitting the end of the bolt is supposed to accomplish this, but I found that I couldn't hit it hard enough in the car to budge that bushing significantly. It's much easier when it's out of the car, and you can hit it straight on.

I have a 2007 S, almost 98k miles, my car didn't start the other day, never had any issues ever w/ starting my car, Put a battery tender on it and got the car started, drove to auto zone to get tested, and they told me my alternator had failed. So car having trouble cranking, or car doesn't start would be some symptoms.

Very interesting. Thanks for the video. I think I need to take the alternator out to check/fix a vacuum leak in the vacuum system that sits under the manifold on my 986. What's the torque spec for the alternator bolts?

Hi Aron - I've got occasional grinding/clacking/ratcheting coming from one of the pulleys and I'm pretty sure it's the alternator pulley as it's the only one making a little noise when spun by hand. The battery light also comes on but very intermittently and only stays on for 20 minutes (I can go months without seeing one). Do you think a bad alternator pulley bearing could cause the light? I'm wondering if I should just spring for a new alternator given the occasional battery light.
