I have owned two Porsches (2015 981 Boxster & 2019 Macon S) both had PDK transmissions. I did nothing but factory required maintenance on these vehicles and never had an issue.

Definitely sounds like not a good shop to do business with. I must confess and admit.....I am 100% guilty of replacing a battery on a Cayenne and didn't end up looking up whether it needed to be "registered" and let the vehicle go. The vehicle was a trouble child that wasn't even brought in for a battery issue, but a check engine light and trouble code for fuel pump control module. Turns out the battery at times when cranking would drop so much (temperature dependent) that it would flag the code. It took me a minute to figure it out, and by that time i just replaced the battery and made sure code wouldn't return. About 6 months later it came back for some overvoltage codes, I made sure to try and do my due diligence and not "throw an alternator" at it, and checked to see if there was a battery registration option in the tool, and sure enough there was. I looked up the previous invoice and got the battery information (because was easier than removing the seat to gain access to the battery to read the information) and input that into the vehicle with the scanner and it hasn't had the overcharging issue since, avoiding a very costly expensive mistake if I would have said it was the alternator's fault. I was one hundred percent transparent with the customer and publicly via a demonstration. I know I made a mistake and owned up to it and made it right and obviously never charged for the diagnosis of the overcharging issue. I have learned from this and know for the next one. Thanks for sharing and making others aware.

Nissan are the same way. Wrecking yards want like 1500 - 2000 for a used 100k mile CVT. List price on a reman from the dealer is like 2500. Its stupid to do it any other way.

Hey, thx for all of your wisdom here. I also have an issue with my PDK, after I changed the PDK oils of my 2017 Macan turbo, the calibration failed when I reached the "clutch bite point adaptation" all the other calibration procedures were carried out, but not this one. Now the car drives but doesn't keep much revs, even in Sport + mode when it reaches 4,000 RPM shifts to a higher gear, where before it used to keep the revs to 7K. For example, before, when driving in 7th gear in normal mode, when Sport+ was selected, it was dropping to 3rd gear, now it drops to 4th, so it doesn't feel as sporty. Any suggestions are much appreciated

So from research and understanding the battery code is only for warranty purposes. You actually input the type of battery and other infonlije ah. Which is what i do. i use the serial number ffrom the battery code, for the 15 digit.

The automotive industry indeed faces challenges due to the presence of individuals without formal training. You're a wise shop owner to recognize this. European vehicles, in particular, have a high rate of major component failure, which can lead to complications. It's concerning when shops attempt to shift liability onto others. When it comes to nationwide chains, particularly franchisees, many of these individuals are not from the automotive industry; rather, they've essentially purchased a job for themselves. I have one such owner in my area who transitioned from the finance sector. It raises questions about their understanding of transmissions and other automotive components. Their knowledge likely stems more from corporate training than hands-on experience in the field. This may result in a misdiagnosis or costly repair to the consumer.

PDKs are very robust. ZF makes them. There are a few problems here though. First one is the ballers on a budget that buy cheap Porsches and dont keep up with the expensive maintenance. Secondly, Porsche owns the patent on the PDK which makes it hard for an indy shop to work on them with limited repair documentation or parts available. Porsche refuses to fix them, only replace them for 17-20K. There are a few fixes for common issues like the gear position sensor, but you usually need to go to a Euro shop that knows what they're doing
@YoshiV819
@YoshiV819 17 күн бұрын
The "PDK" in the Macan is not a ZF unit. It's an in house DSG known as the DL501 marketed by Audi as the "S-Tronic" and Porsche as a "PDK" to match the marketing material of their other vehicles. The DL501 will suffer the same problems as all DSG gearboxes if fluid maintenance is not completed regularly.

All valid points. PDKs are not junk though, rip one apart and you will see. It's more about the lack of factory support to repair them. But there are plenty of performance shops that do. Obviously there have been several versions and applications over the last 15 years but at this point, they have no secrets left. The dealers around me are completely void of all information. They will throw a valve body at it, after that a whole trans. For 20gs, no thanks. The company will not let them be rebuilt but there is nothing too it. It is almost impossible to get one to fail mechanically even under extreme competition use. All the shops that think a PDK is some type of mysical object are antiquated, no offense to you. You can watch animations on youtube.

Ok but first of all its not a real "PDK" its a volkswagen DSG, the DL501 0b5. The things that fail on these are, the gear position sensor, the mechatronik unit that could be any of the valves in the hydraulic unit and or the TCU itself, and the clutches. The mechanic part of the trans almost never gets damaged unless you get an incorrect oil into it. The used transmissions arent bad, but most likely will fail eventually. Just fix any of the used trans omg.

This video was honestly pointless. Code the battery! All that's important are the specs for charging, no one cares what S/N is coded. The battery I bought from Autozone literally has Made in Germany on it, was over $100 less than one from Porsche. Coded with Autel and just changed the S/N by 1 digit from the old one. If you're going to do a video on the Macan DSG, speak to how important regular fluid maintenance is to keeping these units operating properly.

What i just got out of this is you are ranting openly on youtube about your customers. As for the pdk, they are not junk. What the issue is, mechanics dont know how to work on them. Those transmissions do require fluid change and calibration, which most people have sticker shock from the dealer for a simple service. Most mechanics also google pdk issues and will jump on the valvebody bandwagon, replace then ironically it doesnt click they have to calibrate it when installed. This is basically a dual clutch electronically shift manual that acts like an automatic because its two in one. As someone that owns porsches i can dispell the blanket statement that they go out. They dont, and from experience its either lack of maintenance or hack mechanics working on them. I agree that majority of shops will just swap out then rely on you to troubleshoot their issue. If you put in a different trans you NEED to use the pwis and put the pdk in calibration mode and follow the steps. Telling them the trans is junk before you even plug in, is going to cause you to lose customers because if your bread and butter is diag, you need to diag it. I know people will take these comments personal, but its just some advice from someone who has been in your shoes when i was younger, set the ego aside, diag it completely then make your statments.
