Love my 996.2 GT3. Best part about it is how you can throttle steer it and make slide all over the track anytime you want. Love how it demands respect, yes I have spun it. Love how all the parts are still available and you can keep it in 100% condition. Love how when I’m at the track, some drivers flock to my car to tell me how awesome it sounds and how much they regret selling theirs.

Nathan continues to set the standard into what I consider true knowledge about so many different Porsches. Although I consider myself very knowledgeable about these cars, I feel that Nathan is just a cut (or two, or three) above most of us with his ability to remember, explain, and describe so many of the features of these amazing machines. Thanks for another truly great video, and I always look forward to these.

Another great video Nathan! I’m lucky to own a .2 not realizing fewer than a thousand were sold in the US. If anyone is interested in Porsche deep dives, they should watch Nathan’s other excellent videos. Great video. These engines really come alive above 6000rpm and not sure those roads/traffic really let you explore that. You mention at the end about digging into the changes between the two engines....The Mk1 has the simpler 2 Stage 'Variocam' on intake side whereas the Mk2 has 'Variocam Plus' which is infinitely adjustable. On the Mk1, you really feel/hear the last cam stage come in above about 6500rpm as it's a step change, not gradual like the Mk2.

I would really like to find out on how many 996.1 GT3 are out there that came later than my "piano black" one that was picked up by the first owner from Dusseldorf at the PORSCHE factory on December 5th 2000. I know it is one of those last 518 that were built after the 2000 summer factory break. The 99.1 MK2 GT3 included a quite significant number of upgrades compared to the first batch of 1350 items that were produced in 1999 and first half of 2000. Upgrades included alcantara roof lining, stell synchro gearbox, optimized water cooling and motronic engine management, electric trunk and hood release, ...Do the VIN numbers actually follow an order over those last weeks? Which ones would be the latest?

Brilliant! How about a comparison with the 40th AE? If my sources are correct that car’s engine was developed by Porsche Motorsports along with the GT3 just in case the GT3 couldn’t pass emissions or proved unreliable. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts @NathanMerz
@nathanmerz
@nathanmerz 3 ай бұрын
While I REALLY like the 40th AE and think it is an amazing package, IMO a comparison isn't really worthwhile as while they have a similar amount of absolute power 345hp (AE) vs 380hp (.2 GT3) the cars have VERY different design goals and mission. It all depends on what you want to use the car for. I find myself driving my non GT 996 Aero much more often my GT cars or my Turbo as it is a GREAT everyday car that is comfortable, plenty interesting for street driving and easy to live with. The GT3 on the other hand is a MUCH more focused performance car that when driven as intended is extremely rewarding. So while one could use either car for either purpose, each car is best in its designed environment. Love them both.

I understand why you didn't want to quote estimated production figures for the 996.1 Clubsport models since no official numbers were ever published, but after years of research it is generally agreed they are somewhere in this ballpark: - 1,868 Mk1 996 GT3s - 374 total Clubsports - 283 LHD/91 RHD It is a far rarer car than the later 996.2 GT3 RS (682 examples).
