Port Adelaide AFL Bid Video

The Port Adelaide Football Club presented this video to the AFL in 1994 as part of its successful bid to win the second South Australian AFL licence.

Port always had greater differentiation from the Crows so they a better fit than Norwood for the 2nd licence. Had SA’s first conglomerate team had a more working class identity and more Port aligned it would’ve been the other way round.

In what universe was Rugby a competitor of Aussie rules Football in SA in the 90s? But yeah, Port was the only logical choice of all other existing teams, by far the biggest and most successful club an in a way a natural rival for the Crows. Of all possibilities, this is probably one of the best. Obviously, you couldn’t include most teams, 2 teams is fairly representative in terms of the SA population. In the end it was the by far biggest club, and a club to represent the rest of the clubs. The showdown is a fierce and awesome rivalry, even though it lacks the long history of other rivalries in SA, particularly the Norwood/Port rivalry.

The Rugby Wars of the 90s were definitely a thing. The AFL would have been wary of the money been thrown around by League and Union to establish national competitions themselves. The Adelaide Rams were alive from 1995 and there was a debate in the soon to be created Super Rugby as to if Adelaide or Perth was a better option.

@@BryanLikesCandy I know of the Rams and the SR discussion. Still, the discrepancy between the two/three sports in SA was enormous at that time (still is since nothing has changed since the Rams were removed).
