What a fab episode D.U. I’m with you on visiting these locations, they are so interesting. I knew those tug boat operators were on good salary, a friend of my family was one on the east coast - off Caloundra, to navigate ships into Brisbane Port. Port Hedland is much more active, exciting to watch, immense is understatement, and extremely profitable. Apply pressure to your MPs in all electorates, we need to ensure All Australians are benefiting from the royalties - spent wisely once your State or Territory receives these funds. Your hospitals, roads, infrastructure and more, hold them accountable for what we should have in this wealthy country today, because we certainly don’t see that wealth around ALL Our regions. Port Hedland was One of our highlights of the whole trip. The tug boats put on a fabulous 'dance routine' which included huge water sprays. It was fascinating, we watched for a couple of hours. Really enjoyed the iron ore tour aswell. Great episode from you guys.

Omgosh that was brilliant! I was born in Port Hedland but we left when i was 9mo and never have returned. Our holiday planning for June next year we are planning to go and see my birth home town! I can’t wait. I really appreciate you guys enjoying and exploring this amazing town. Mum and Dad would often go down to the port and watch the ships come and go, enjoying fish and chips for dinner. They have fond memories living there over an 18month period of the start of the marriage. I can’t wait to see where they lived, the place my dad worked and the hospital i was born in. Great episode :) Here is a random fact for you. BHP have 5 Car Dumpers (train unloaders) which tip and empty either 2 or 3 ore cars at a time (depending on which one). Three on the Port Hedland side and two on the Finucane Island side. However the random fact, one of those car dumpers was from the Hoover Dam project. BHP bought it and operate it still to this day in Port Hedland...

Thanks, guys, for such an interesting episode. I had no idea Port Hedland played such a huge role in Australia's economy: one 257-carriage train every hour for 24 hours is mind-blowing. I was doing an environmental survey and was based at Millstream Station in 1970 when I came across a geologist in my 4x4. He was looking at a cliff on the Robe River and said it was 90% iron that they were going to mine. It's now Panawonicca. I hope you don't mind me wearing my hat as a communication professor, but we always taught our TV students to remove their sunnies when talking to the camera because eyes carry so much communication potential. You both have such expressive eyes, and it's better than looking at Chris's skungy, two-tone beard. Miriam (my grandmother's name, too): I'm glad you got rid of that misogynistic guy you had reporting your Mt Gambier episode. This guy has a much nicer disposition and is more interested in information that educates us, including how to spell Hedland, which I didn't know.

I drive the quad roadtrains up here into the port to unload . Used to sit at the entrance on a nice night counting the ships waiting to come in . 42 waiting was the most at one time I saw .

Yep our little home port contributes 4% of Australia's GDP. Last financial year was almost 7000 safe shipping movements and 573 million tonnes exported. If you average $100 per tonnes for easy maths, wow! I loved your comment, Chris, about how much money is generated out of PH any why you can't understand why we don't have a better town. Most of us who live hear think the same way. We should be as nice as Karratha or better. Fun fact, when I was a kid everyone who lived in Karratha used to come to Port Hedland to do shopping. We get the family thing which is why we do 2 or 3 months then head back home. When we do longer trips we have brother in law and his wife with us in their van. You can tell because we have identical white triton dual cab utes and almost identical Jayco vans like the one you had. It works well for all of us, so no change for now. The guys getting on and off the little jet boats are the draft surveyors. They check the waterline of the ships to determine how much it has in it and at what point it can depart the port etc due to depth restrictions. Those little jet boats run all the ships lines, sending them to the wharf for tensioning.

Over the back from where you were camped, and down the beach in the port direction is another beach where the leatherback turtles come to lay their eggs. You can wander down and see them come out of the ocean and up the beach. not a bad pub there also

Hi Team, little bit of info, the iron ore trains lengths are about 2.2km to 2.4km average long, average 240 to 300carts, about 25T ore per car. The ships average loading turn around is 18hrs for 200,000ton ships and large 320,000t ones are about 24hrs average. One major company exports 260Mt, another 200Mt, another minor company 65Mt and another 35Mt. So a lot of ore out the PORT. If you think ore price of $95 to $125 per ton there large numbers. This is what keeps Australia on going. Then there is also salt and few other minerals. The port is very close to capacity with ship movements. I’m sure there is a lot of your followers which have exact figures but these are just averages. Karratha Port is around 360Mt so if you add these there is a few Chev’s on each ship.

I work in this industry for one of these large companies. The stats are astronomical on the machines just remember alot of these machines are robots controlled from Perth at control centres. One iron ore company is moving to autonomous trains ie no driver. If you get chance to go to large mine, go and have a look as alot of haul trucks have no drivers, there autonomous also. Maybe on your next lap, I think they have these in Queensland also just not as big scale.
