Having lived in Portchester as a child spent many hours in the castle grounds and church. Most impressed at how it is displayed today…. Must try for a visit.

very informative, however [current thinking] is that Carausius - the commander of the Roman Fleet around Britain who usurped power and declared himself Emperor of Britain and Gaul was in turn assassinated by his treasurer Allectus who is thought to have built the Saxon Shore forts [which I recently found out includes the outer- reconstructed- walls of Cardiff castle]... and as much to defend against Saxon raids but also Rome. Rome turned up in 296 and regained control .

Omg this place is absolutely astonishing.. great history and an excellent vlog .. I fished many times in Portsmouth harbor and spent alot of time over in Gosport and never visited Portsmouth it's self, I'm sorry now I didn't.

I enjoyed the history of this incredible castle, it certainly has a very long history. It must have been an interesting place during those gap years, between 1814 - 1926, when it was left derelict and unloved. I can imagine it must have been overgrown, possibly a place for the destitute. Hard times to imagine 😉😊 great video

I visited this castle mid 70s on a school day trip and can barely remember anything except the Keep seemed very high The film hasn’t triggered any memories. A fine castle Saxon raiders and pirates were beginning to plague Britannia Some were hired as anti piracy units by the Roman occupation of Britannia. Fascinating
