There's kind of a subtle joke in here that many won't get. They discuss the bird being a heritage breed and 100% organic, also male. The chicken that is shown is a female Isa Brown. The amusing thing here is that Isa Browns are a designer breed created by Hendricks Genetics for use as battery hens. They also have no meat on them and are incredibly poorly suited to eating. The bird is the furthest thing from what it's being described as and serves to illustrate that we have no bloody clue what we eat and don't care as long as it sounds fancy and ethical.
@KeithPhillips8 жыл бұрын
I mentioned today (and grossed someone out) that we only eat female birds. My partner didn't want any idea on what happens to the males after sexing... And it's "Hendrix" by the way. Don't want readers going on a wild goose hunt (pun intended...) :P
@SandraFowler8 жыл бұрын
Huh, you're right. Hendrix. What the Hell, brain? You know better. My bad, thanks for catching that. Yeah that practice of immediately euthanizing male chicks is part of why I got into farming in the first place. I found commercial farming practices unethical and I knew there was a better way. We raise all of our male chickens to adulthood and eat *only* male birds. Our female birds are allowed to lead very long, healthy and productive lives. Most commercial egg laying birds are rehomed or euthanized at or around 18 months. Most of my birds are going on 6 and 7 years old and still lay regularly despite the assertion that they shouldn't. It turns out that if you attend to the nutritional needs of elderly birds properly they DO continue to lay for most of their lives.

I’ve never seen an actress ever act so accurately like a waitress in a she or film. Usually, they are told to act sassy or weird in some way. This actress captures the exact vibe and tone of voice of a good server.

Did you all know this was the first skit in the very first episode of Portlandia ever. I was sitting and just watching tv one night and saw the show was coming on, and being an Oregon native, wondered what it was. Actually it was the second skit after the opening of Carrie in L.A. and then the dream of the 90s is alive in Portland opening, then the Colin chicken skit.

I'm a cook. The server walked into the kitchen one night and said the customer wanted to know where the pickerel was from. I was like, "ok, hold on," and I ran to the freezer, found the box, and it said it was from.....drum roll....Kazakhstan! I kid you not - Kazakhstan! I have no idea how there is money in flash freezing pickerel in Kazakhstan and shipping it to Canada when we have literally millions of lakes full of them here. And yet, that pickerel was from Kazakhstan.

ALSO: why would a reliable chicken farmer feed SOY to the birds? That stuff is garbage. I remember this skit from several years ago. I thought it was funny then. Nowadays I shell out $4 for a dozen PASTURE-RAISED eggs. But they’re higher in nutrients, and the chickens spend their days outside, eating grass and worms and bugs. Do I need to go visit Carol’s farm to verify this? Umm, hold my comment, I’ll be back soon.
