Porto 1-0 Arsenal - Champions League 2024 | Arsecast

In this episode I’m joined by Phil Costa to discuss Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday evening. We chat about how different Europe and the Premier League can be, and the need for Mikel Arteta’s side to learn quickly from last night’s game. We analyse the performance, where and why Arsenal struggled, and how Porto negated our strengths with their, at times, extremely cynical game-plan. There’s discussion of the late goal we conceded that came from a catalogue of minor errors, what we can take from this performance in order to turn things around in the second leg, and lots more.

I think this game was like a clown fiesta. They was jast throwing themselves to the ground and crying every single time. I was literally starting to dislike football as the game seeing this spectacle. How everyone acting like ots ok and its fair play. Literally parody of a sport we like.

The problem was we played the same style of possessing the ball with no aggressive intention or looking to press the issue that we did in December. It really looked like we were playing for the draw, which made the late goal even worse. I have faith we will bring it back though. Now we need to focus on Newcastle and get back on track.

We were lethargic, toothless and waaaaaay toooo slow on the ball. We need to play front foot with this squad - period.

The issue with not making subs isn’t about changing the game per se. It’s about getting fresh legs on the field. We started the same lineup 3 road games in a row in 10 days and have another game in 3 days. We have to rotate the squad occasionally. Smith Rowe and nketiah easily could’ve played 20 minutes for us last night. Nelson could’ve played 10. Maybe they weren’t going to win us the game but it keeps energy levels throughout the team higher and benefits us for Newcastle. And with 5 subs available now you almost have to make subs just to match physicality and keep energy levels on par to the opponent. And if arteta didn’t want to play those guys against Porto he should’ve played them more against west ham or burnley. We didn’t look sharp physically or mentally last night.

I was a decent strike but raya concerns me maybe I'm biased as a ramsdale fan but this creeping off his line time and time again. ramsdale is a better keeper raya is better with the ball at his feet but a keeper has to be a keeper first before he's an outfield player.

A bad mistake by Martinelli but an abysmal one by Raya, (the guys just way too short in stature to be top class!) being on the edge of his pen box that late in the game, especially, 1. He invited the strike and 2. would have been saved easily if he had been on his line because the trajectory of the shot was great but it had no real power and would have been collected easily. Poor, fearful and waaaay to respectful of Porto from the start and we didn’t deserve to win, but we DEFINITELY didn’t deserve that sucker punch! 🤷‍♂️ I have no doubt whatsoever we will win at the Emirates cos Porto looked very average indeed. Also, that ref was nothing short of PATHETIC and rather than honestly REFEREE the game, he took the easy way out time and time again. 🙄

Earlier it was just Sports now it's Sports and Entertainment business. Arsenal showing they are trying to shoot but cant find a goal, and last minute falls back and opens a window for them to take a crack, was all part of the script. They win by one goal in the end, their fans are happy, next leg arsenal will win in their home ground, and our fans will be happy. The point is to keep everyone entertained for money to keep flowing in. Sorry for being a conspiracy theorist, I do get ridiculed from time to time, but my observations are based on data patterns.

Ref was very strict with the soft challenges. But you can’t control that. Arsenal were timid. The team has all the tools to go and provoke. Losing only 1-0 is a blessing.

If Arsenal go out of Europe at home in the 2nd leg for the 4th time under Arteta and fail to win the league after bombing out the cups early again, he's got to go in the summer. This squad is capable of more, need to stop relying on injury prone players (but some reason decided to give Tomi as a big pay rise this month) and stop freezing out players he previously wanted to keep (nelson, smithrowe)

I would agree with you totally about the future of Arteta but looking back at previous last 16 Champions league squads we are nowhere near a challenging squad yes when everyone is fit but Jesus Zinchenko Partey Tommi who are significant 1st team players are never fit so they need to be moved on along with Eddie Nelson ESR Vierra. and Cedric because none of them could even play for a lower premier league team and Iam not surprised that Arteta can't trust any of these players maybe Ethan is wonder what he can do to get into this squad on a regular basis oh and I forgot Elneny is still with us

I love the content gentlemen but I regret to say that I think we wanted a 0.0 draw and we over controlled the game and the intent was to manage the game pass back pass sideways and after 20 minutes I thought this was going to be a 0.0 draw we have to understand that this was an amazing result for Porto at home no away goals for the Arsenal I can't see us progressing

He was my friend but the Arsenal were awful Iam running out of years living when we could win this competition against Barcelona when we were the best team in the world lady luck was against us and iam afraid I don't think in my lifetime we will ever win the Champions league last night was all about naivety and lack of strength off the bench yes we have a good squad when everyone is fit but they are never fit for example Partey is world class but how many games has he played for us this season let him go now
