Hi Kalie and Josh. Another very creative video, the Francesinha standoff. Haha, yeah francesinhas do vary a lot. Even the ones in Porto and each person has their favorite! In terms of general recipe overview. I think the bun and meat increases quality, however the sauce is each house secret. Some sauces, are more spicy, other are more beer taste, others wine... Also, agree your statement. Nowadays, you can find more of these restaurants with good food quality/price and more "family" directed farther from the city center. City center is full of tourist traps, or more expensive restaurants. Although you can still finds some hidden gems :) - Yuko is more in a university students area, as it is near the faculties and universities hub. Saludos

Honestly, tipping isn't necessary, but it's greatly appreciated and sometime awkward. 😂 Here's our rule, if the bill is small or there is little need for service rendered, no tip. If the bill is €10-20 and there is service rendered we'll leave the change plus a euro coin. You should try Manjar das Francesinhas in Braga. There I think you will have the best of both worlds, good sauce and good meat. In Braga they are the best Francesinhas.

100% true. This is why I'm not a big fan of the francesinha...but...you get quality meat in it, it's a game changer. The lombo do boi at Belga and the traditional one at Yuko both had REALLY good meat. The smoked whatever it was in Yuko's was awesome. Kalie's right. If you could get the base of Yuko and the sauce of Belga, it's a fantastic frankenstein of a francesinha. - Josh & Kalie

Leah and I have been in Porto for about 5 days and have tried Franceschina twice but have yet to make it to Yuko Tavern we did stop today and had it at Cafe Santiago and the sauce (it’s all about the sauce, right?) was amazing. Here's the thing...what I noticed was a difference in the sauce, and yes...the quality of the meats. But what was the same in both locations is that Kalie is doing all of the stroller work! That's right. I tried to artistically show that in the thumbnail. It was definitely the sauce between these two that was the game changer. The meats were different and both were good. The Belga sauce was an exposition of flavor in your mouth. The Yuko one was familiar and like comfort food. Kalie will tell you the real reason she's always pushing in the videos is because we can never use her footage when she's filming. 😂 We've wasted too many shots with her holding the camera. - Josh & Kalie

A francesinha crawl is possible. 😂 We would have to split them though. We haven't been to O Afonso but we've seen it on a few lists of great ones but not all the lists include them. We'll try it but not this month. 😂 Some places, there's a fee to split it, like a euro or two and other places it's free to split them and you can ask. Yes, again, some places will box it for you. Just for clarification, we didn't eat 2 in a day on this video. There were 4 days in between. - Josh & Kalie

Even if I ate meat , I would not eat that . Too much sauce surely? I was always told that we Portuguese don’t cook with a lot of sauce because it hides the quality of the meat. 🤷‍♀️

Sorry, it was a big assumption on our part that people already knew the most infamous sandwich of Porto/Portugal. The real reason we didn't is because we're not great vloggers. We'll take your feedback on board, because you're 100% right (we should have gone ahead and explained it making no assumptions). Thank you. It's typically layers of white bread, a variety of meat (beef, sausages, ham), cheese, sauce, and hopefully topped with an egg. There is some poetical license from place to place with the ingredients and sauce recipe for sure. Some places fries are included and others it's a side order. There are hundreds of francesinha places in Porto (including Porto, Matosinhos, Gaia, Maia etc.). You can't compare. Braga is tiny, and doesn't have the same variety. You can't try one place in Porto and assume all are the same.

Some francesinha places in Porto (and Braga or Lisbon) should either stop selling them or start making them better. If you've had a bad one and we're sure you have if you've tried enough places, you know what we're talking about. For this content piece, we actually asked our audience and people on the street in both places to tell us their favorite francesinha spot. Yuko was the top answer in Porto. - Josh & Kalie

@@ExpatsEverywhere I agree that there's a lot of sh** for sale. The main issue for me is the deviation from the original sauce towards a "ketchup based" beer sauce. When you see that the sauce is too sweet and has a ketchup flavour, then we're no longer talking about a francesinha...

This was hilarious! The edginess- for real?!. why don’t you just call the Braga version of the Franciszinha the Braga-Zinha? Then we can all sing Que Sera Sera! Ha! If you were living in Portugal and you had another daughter would you name her Franciszinha? What about if you were living in Brazil? Lol because they have some funny names in Brazil. Or maybe BragaZinha in Brazil, and Franciszinha in PT? Francis is the male snd Frances is the female. So depends on spelling, son or daughter. I had an aunt and uncle who are married and both were Francis/Frances! They were well known in Milwaukee lol. Do restaurants spell the dish the same way, or do some spell it in the feminine and others in the masculine, kind of like Obrigada and Obrigado?! since “Zinha” means “a little” as in “Tchauzinho,” is the son or daughter of a Francis or Frances who is also named Francis or Frances called a Franciszinha? These are very importuguese issues!!! That and the fact that Kaylee has to schlep the carriage around to far corners of Porto hahaha! We used to call eating food like that in San Francisco “going on the Colma express”. Since there are no graveyards in San Francisco, Colma, is the graveyard for the city. It’s a stop on BART and a point of quiet reflection lol. If you’re from the Bay Area, you probably know what I’m talking about, but essentially it means that dish clogs your arteries, and you can expect sudden death or other major cardiac event following such a meal, especially if washed down with alcohol. Franciszinhas are the “po’boys” of PT and the meat quality is to say, compassionately, VARIABLE! They’re antithetical to current recommendations for good health. SAUDE!
