"Oh, I forgot the ear" Draws ear in a simple stroke and look exactly like in the picture. There's no errors in art, only beautiful mistakes

The fact that you make statements like "it looks like i got that right", and that you openly admitted you had forgotten the ear highlight a rather important fact: people make mistakes. I took art classes with people who never openly stated their mistakes, so most of the students built up an image of the teacher as someone who is able to draw perfectly without effort or error, and that is very intimidating for most people. You show people that mistakes are ok, that they can be corrected, and that you can learn from it.

This is better than art school. You can watch and learn any time you want and it does not cost a fortune and the teacher is better. My friend has a masters in art. I told her "come to my house and let's pump out commission portraits and make a small fortune. She said: "I don't know how to draw face's, only figures".

I wanted to draw my grandmother's portrait, and had given it 2 attempts already, looking at various vedios trying to use their techniques, which I obviously couldn't execute, but only u talk about the most important thing : attention to able to see what u want n not getting caught up! Also your style helps me to not take it too seriously, and draw loosely and enjoy the process... which in turn relaxes my mind helping it keep focus... Just fantastic ❤️

I'm confused of what the best way to draw a portrait is now 😕 There's a method that my brother does which turns out really good where he starts with a nose then tried to connect the eyes' distance and everything from there
@YongChen
@YongChen 7 жыл бұрын
Kyla, your brother's way of drawing is fine. There's always a planning process at the beginning. Some people do more planning, some people do less; and some people do it on paper, but some people do it in their mind. As I am teaching, I like to do my planning on paper and make it visible, so others will see how my mind work. Thanks for sharing your feedback.

what is your opinion about drawing using tracing method and grid method. Your art works and teaching videos are wonderful.
@YongChen
@YongChen 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for asking this question. Tracing and grid can be a useful production processes to get something done with much less artistic interpretation and creativity. I sometimes suggest it to some students of watercolor who has yet little drawing experience and ability so that they can practice watercolor techniques while they are learning the basic of drawing. My opinion is, if you want to be a good artist and build up your drawing skills, then don't rely on other short-cuts, focus on drawing with your mind, eyes and hands. I hope that this help you.

@YongChen
@YongChen 8 жыл бұрын
+Krissi Using charcoal sticks need to use larger paper, commonly we use 18x24" drawing or charcoal paper, secondary, practice your charcoal pencil and charcoal sticks with different pressures, sometimes lighter, sometimes pressing more to make darker marks. Also, try the different hard, medium and soft charcoal, you may find some is easier than others. Have fun, and thank you for commenting.

Good tips on getting the proportions right. I draw on and off and sometimes after a hiatus I forget what I'm doing. I tend to draw almost instinctively. These videos are helpful in getting me to a more mechanical approach, to draw accurately when I don't 'feel' the subject. One slight quibble with this particular video though. Personally I wouldn't be happy with this drawing: it doesn't look like the subject.
