Dave, if you want something to eat between 15H00 and 19H00, going to a restaurant is the wrong choice. After all, the employees, also need to rest and have a break between preparing food, tables, cleaning, and serving lunches and dinners. During that period of time, you go to a Café, a Bakery, or a Pastry Shop, and they will always have something for you to eat. Just don´t expect roasted lamb or grilled fish during that period for example. That meal is called "Lanche" in Portugal. It´s not equal to lunch, but more a light meal between Lunch and Dinner, since usually Portuguese have dinner between 20H00 and 21H00. I also disagree with lunch being heavier than dinner. I think both of them are quite equal, but since you are not expected to go to bed immediately after your meal, it´s ok. That´s my experience as a Portuguese, but of course, other people may have different opinions on the subject.

Exactly! I always smirk a bit when I watch that scene from Lord of the Rings when the hobbits are complaining about food "what about second breakfast? or elevenses? afternoon tea?" ... I think those hobbits were portuguese :D We do have about 5 meals, if you count the small snacks in the middle of the morning and lanche in the afternoon :D Lanche, I feel, is a very alien concept for many foreign visiting people :D

That restaurant thing I don’t understand at all and it’s not correct. You have a cafe, bakery in every corner where often you can have soup, small dishes and snacks so saying one has to prepare so you don’t find yourself in a dangerous situation is just not accurate And you are 100% right, the person you have to be most afraid is indeed the granny at the window

In Portugal you can find both guarded and unguarded beaches. On supervised beaches, there are signs indicating the bathing areas, which are usually the safest areas, where most people bathe and where you can find lifeguards watching more closely. On the monitored beaches there are also flags indicating the state of the sea: green flag means that you can swim, yellow flag means that you can bathe but you cannot swim and a red flag that means that you cannot bathe or swim. If there are areas with dangerous currents, they are usually also marked. Visit unsupervised beaches at your own risk. These beaches are not recommended for children or even adults who are not good swimmers.

you will never be too far away from a café or pastelaria to eat something, when restaurants are closed we go to cafés to eat, some will serve soup all day and other stuff like bifanas wich are closer to a meal but what we eat at those time periods in cafés is usually bread, pastries or salty pastries with some coffee and milk or juice. Also fast food and shopping malls are always serving food some 24h, and supermarkets and groceries can also be a good option if your angry and need something quick and cheap, nowadays some have an eating area and fresh hot meals

Correction - Most people have dinner around 20.00. But if / when eating out, it is moved to 21.00. Mostly because we are always "fashionably late". So you book your dinner at 20.30, but most people will only at 20.45, and for sure there will be a few stragglers at 21.00 that will hold the dinner out :D

The greeting between men and women kissing each other on the cheek is indeed a thing here, but only between good friends or family members. In the case of friends of friends, it really depends on how comfortable people are with that sort of greeting. It's much more common the younger you are and tends to phase out the older you get to just general greetings due to... well, obvious reasons when it comes to marriages/relationships, I guess? As for anything else, unless you're good friends or family, general greetings is how you do it. Just had to sort that one up 😄 EDIT: Oh, and a very important information that even most Portuguese don't know about when going to unsupervised beaches (less frequented, less known, more remote ones): If you see areas in the water where waves literally die, as in a path from the beach into the ocean with no wave, DO NOT go into the water, even if you're a skilled swimmer and know what to do. Those are riptides and they are the main cause of death in unsupervised beaches here, as far as I know, even more so than the Portuguese man'o'war. If by the slim chances you ever get caught in one and you're calm enough to remember ever reading this, swimming parallel to the beach for a little bit is the way to go, not swimming against the current in a riptide since you'll lose every single time.

Blaming on tourists the problems caused by tourism is utter nonsense. The government has all the power it needs to take actions that reduce the negative impact of tourism and balance it with the positives. It's the job of the government to figure out how to best do that (with collaboration of the citizens). You can't expect tourists to somehow understand the negative impact of tourism in the region, and somehow figure out what they can do to mitigate that, and above all, act against their own self interest.
@susanatinsley7136
@susanatinsley7136 Жыл бұрын
@@Boak7 Also that happens everywhere more and more often, in the UK and in the US especially, a lot of young people cannot afford to rent their own place or buy a house, it's not just Portugal's government that doesn't care about its people, I'm afraid that happens in a lot of so called civilised countries. And of course you can't blame tourists, why would you, they contribute to the economy, you also can't blame people for moving to Portugal and buying houses/farms or whatever, you should take that as a compliment that they love your country (my country too by the way), so just remember people, it's your government that makes things difficult for you, not tourists/immigrants.

My wife & I love hitting restaurants at 7PM when we travel in Europe. It's a touch late for us to eat, but early for seemingly most Europeans, so there's rarely a crowd. It took a little getting used to, and we usually travel in the larger cities where a few options are available all the time. But I could grow to like it, I think. I certainly like the more relaxed and easy going vibe when you eat. Restaurants aren't so focused on table turnover like they are in the States, so you can take your time and enjoy the meal, especially in Portugal and Spain. And it's crazy how cheap the beer & wine is. Portugal, Italy, Belgium and others have beer that's half the price you'd pay in the US, if not less. Denmark is the only place we've been where I think the prices for beer, wine & cocktails was on par with what I'm used to. It's odd having to pay for water in most places, but you get used to that, too.

Dave, you have to go to a café to eat something between 3 pm to 7 pm, you will find a variety of food there, because we, portuguese, do eat in that time, in fact we do not have breakfast-lunch-dinner like american people. We have an eating hour between lunch and dinner that we call "lanche" where we eat a pastry, some bread or even a cake meanwhile drinking some juice or tea. You can mix up whenever you will like and eat it, although do not eat too much otherwise you will not be hungry for dinner time 😂😆 As for greetings, if you mistake the side you might be in an awkward position because you and the other person can encounter each other meanwhile going for a kiss on the cheek. You can start by exchanging an hand shake and as time goes by you will get used to it and start doing it. Older ladies will go for the kiss on the cheek because it is a sign of respect and closeness 😉

I am probably coming to your video (which i enjoyed very much) a bit late but as a Portuguese-born living abroad since 2019 guy I did love your video as I always love POVs on Portugal from people who have moved there from elsewhere in the world. That said I'd only share my experience of Portugal (from 2019 and years before that and from recent trips there to spend time with my family that remained in Portugal: in my home town, restaurants opening hours are still like those described by you only in the top range restaurants and the ones catering to local inhabitants of the town itself. Elsewhere they depend more on tourists than on locals and have quite flexible lunch and dinner hours.. The other point I'll take issue (mildly) with is about drinking in public: yes it is perfectly legal (why wouldn't it be, there must be some crazy weird countries out there sorry to say so but I suspect that there are) but I don't know how it is kept by law to specific times of day or places according to those times of day. My experiences past as residing in Portugal and current ones of visiting it fairly often are that if such a law exists breaking it (in moderation) does not attract any attention from legal authorities, police forces or fellow countryfolk. I'd say attitudes towards drinking are fairly relaxed everywhere in the larger cities because it's in accordance with the zeitgeist, elsewhere because it's in accordance with the zeitgeist present and past going back several centuries.

6:47 Here in Portugal, as glasses of wine are cheap, we are used to buying the bottle. It is much more worthwhile and much cheaper to buy a bottle of wine in a restaurant than ordering glasses, it is often even more expensive than the bottle because we are not aware of how much we are drinking.

Great it is so: 'cheap' but for Portuguese people, the majority, it is not really that cheap . . .

Very rarely people have work break lunch with family or friends who don't work together. And usually people don't have alcoholic drinks at lunch during weekdays. You are not observing correctly. In Portugal people are mainly decent people and certainly more free. Keep up the good work

Correction: you pretend to kiss but only give your cheek to the other person's cheek. It can be innapropriate to actually use your lips as it is usually a flirt to use your lips (unless you're family, then it's ok. Men kiss their father and grandfather, even brother, exceptionally a close friend)

First of all thank you for these videos. On another subject, sorry... But are you planning on a trip to the Azores and doing a video? Ponta Delgada (Azores, Capitol) would be a great place to go on your first Azores trip.

Like some people are saying here,i do'nt kmow what he's talking about in some issues.This is the 2nd vídeo i saw from this guy talking about the beer and water prices and as a portuguese man living here since birth from 48 years,i never ever heard of a place with beer cheaper than water.That's news to me!Also people burning their trash is something i never came across.Some people in rural areas burn dry leafs and dry grass just to prevent fires but never trash.You must have strange neighbours!Anyways,that being said welcome to Portugal Dave.

Silly. There's lots of food available between restaurant opening hours. From food stores to cafes, snack bars to street vendors (usually ice cream or roast chestnuts). Also vending machines in many places.

Do you want to know the reason why in portugal we don't have notices everywhere, like you do in the U.S.? Because in our country we don't sue people for everything, like in your country.

We are visiting from the US for the month of March. Sharing these cultural differences is really helpful for us to understand the way things are done and to be respectful. I have to say, I find it difficult to eat dinner so late. What time do people go to sleep at night?
@Rally1800
@Rally1800 Жыл бұрын
That's a though one. Maybe midnight I guess? Stores (shopping malls specifically) stay open untill 11pm so people tend to stay out. Maybe less so during the winter. Edit: typical working hours here are 9 to 6 (including 1h lunch break). So between getting home and cook something people are used to eat dinner somewhere between 7 30 and 8 30.

I would say, 8:30 PM is the ideal time to dinner in Portugal, not too early, not too late... most people in a working day go to bed around midnight.

Well, all last governments are also transforming our country in... a big brother, with a lot of surveillance cameras everywhere combined with electronic devices (motorway's "Via Verde", Visa and ATM cards, mobile phones, etc etc) . We are now 100 % controlled also in Portugal.... It's a paradise for Police State surveillance...
