I’m lucky enough to buy these in bakeries in the San Francisco Bay Area where there are many residents of Portuguese descent. Thanks to you, Mr. Paul, I now know how to make them myself 🙏
@MrPaulsPantry2 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, I've simplified it a little because the Portuguese roll their puff pastry like a swiss roll and cut off slices similar to a cinnamon bun then mould it into the tin with their thumbs, but I found quite often I had holes in the pastry case doing it this way, Thank for you comment, always nice to hear from you and also what's happening on the other side of the world too.
@simonwong23462 жыл бұрын
@@MrPaulsPantry, I hadn’t noticed the pastry other than it tasted good. Your expertise renders these recipes achievable for the home-baker. As for matters here, too many mass shootings each week. I don’t know if they’re all reported in the UK but it’s gut-wrenching to hear of unnecessary loss of life, so frequently. Closing the stable door after the horse has bolted might be of some benefit but considerably more is needed. America is a wonderful and interesting place but has its pros and cons just like anywhere else.

Wonderful Mr. Paul. We had these in Portugal and wanted to make our own! I hope I can find the butter pastry here in California. Of course I can try my own but as you said, the ready made isn’t bad. I do my Quiches that way, though the crust for them is short crust.

Thanks MR. PAUL, it's amazing to see you sharing your skills again, looking well too 😀 I've made your traditional English custard tarts many times a classic foolproof recipe, it's bank holiday Monday in the UK tomorrow and with my lot having a lazy day I'm going to make these, thanks as always for sharing your experience about the sugar were not too sweet to taste and now I know will slightly adjust that, quick question we only have semi-skimed milk but always have cream, can I add cream to that milk to save buying specially full milk. Sort of. They are less sweet and not as rich, and use lard not butter for the pastry. But they are related, as Macau is where they come from originally, Portuguese colony, then spread to Hong Kong and Canton areas.

Curious why you moved to Spain? I've been considering moving there 1. Way cheaper to live there than here in USA 2. Seems the weather is awesome. Am I right or wrong? Thanks!

Hi, my late wife and I had a house in Morocco for many years and purchased a small studio flat in Spain so we could break the drive down to Morocco from the UK. We fell in love with Spain so decided to sell up in the UK (house & Business) and move permanently to Spain and open a bakery here. Sadly I lost my dear wife and I'm retired now for 13 years. It is much cheaper to live and the weather is really good. Be warned, there are many pitfalls nowadays moving to Spain, large income requirements and private healthcare.

@@MrPaulsPantry Well, I went for the 300mls and they came out nice but not nice enough eat them all. Maybe if I'd used the 400ml they might have tasted less 'sweet'. I made 6 but only ate 1. Thank you for clarifying, I shall amend my written recipe and maybe try again.

The pastry should not come off from the tin according to the portuguese recipe. It looks like your recipe is an english custard tart version. Also the puff pastry (that you buy in a shop) is different from the original portuguese pastry recipe.
@MrPaulsPantry2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, do they sell them in the tin then? My recipe is nothing like an English custard tart, in fact I've made and sold any thousands of English Custard Tarts in my bakery over the past 60 years. Unfortunately I just checked but failed to see any of your videos, I wonder why'
