We'll have to try it, we have something not too dissimilar to this in Denmark, though reading up on the recipe it seems that they have not known quite why the different ingredients are used. They leave out the Port (first sin) then they mix the all the ingredients milk sugar, cinnamon and egg (failing to use the egg to seal the milk in the bread) and they use butter on a pan to fry it rather than bathing it in oil. So the same, but different - your recipe sounds more alluring!
