About the German helmet with the skull. As far as I know, in WW2 Germans didn't paint skulls in front of their helmets. Freikorps did do that in 1919. And most, if not all, of the pics of skulls in WW2 stahlhelms are from Finnish Light Detatchment 4, that was part of the cavalry and skulls were part of cavalry emblem.

Why bother to look for historical accuracy in the current mainstream FPS like Battlefield and Call of Duty? Realism doesn’t sell. Look at the more realistic FPS, they have relatively low player counts, most are struggling to survive. The average player does not want a realistic tactical they want Fortnite in WW2, with fun exotic customizable weapons and character skins. They would consider realism as boring, standard weapons and uniforms as a lack of imagination - been there done that, how many more WW2 games can you make repeating the same events etc. Well the result of that is Vanguard. A true corporate “develop by the tick box” game. There were some good games, even recently some came close to the originals, but still handicapped by the need to be innovative for the sake of innovation, inclusivity and last but not least propaganda.

There is actually a manual of operations with the MG42 and how to hipfire it. You basically need to use a rifle strap on your arm and use the Bipod in the folded position as a pseudo foregrip. It looks uncomfortable as hell and woefully inaccurate but it's better than having nothing.

You know? I think it would have been better if the Mission included Polina being in a Sniper team with Reznov and Dimitri. Polina is taking some notes from both Dimitri and Reznov. Dimitri being the "heros need not question their actions" ending, which would make Polina consider that this war, while personal, she grows less and less assured up until the Nazis grow mere desperate, where they recruit every one they can find. The young, the weak, and the old. while Reznov is his vengeful self, with Polina viewing Reznov as a kind of a mirror to herself.

Fun fact about the trench mag for the Gewehr 98/98K: it is pseudo detachable for cleaning purposes, but due to the layout of the magazine body, follower, and detent from the floorplate that locks it in place you’d have to use the tip of a cartridge any time you wanted to reload without using stripper clips, and as soon as you did the overpowered spring from the follower would ejaculate ammo everywhere the second it was removed from the gun. It does use a small cross key to pin the follower in place but as far as I’m aware isn’t modeled in game.

FYI: I wouldn't think shoulder firing the MG42 would be very difficult, though you'd hold on to the bipod and certainly keep fingers well away from the barrel sheath. I've done it many times with the MG3, which is pretty much the same gun, and it doesn't weigh more than around 12kg with the ammo. It also doesn't take an incredible amount of practice to fire in 3-4 round burst, and with holding the bipod accuracy is decent in the 20-50m range as that's when you rely on 'point-and-shoot' . I would also assume the Germans picked larger guys for the larger guns, and I think pretty much any 180ish/80ish guy won't have any major difficulties in lifting 12kg. At the very end of my conscription we were granted a bit more freedom, and I was allowed to Rambo the close combat fire track with the MG3 and 1 barrels worth/200 rounds (my squad leader/'blood-quart' found the idea funny). The targets did have more holes than running the round with the AG3, though mostly due to twice the ammo...

The overcoat is fine - it's basically the same kind that was used by the Imperial Russian army, and didn't change much since then. The bigger issue would be the odd cape that Polina is wearing - capes _were_ a thing in the Red Army, but what she's wearing is a very stylized version that doesn't do the main job of a cape - protecting from rain and snow. It's Harry Potter stuff, not real world stuff. Red collar tabs - before the shoulder pads were reintroduced in 1943, those were the rank insignia for the Red Army. After that they only remained as a style. However, the man is wearing a vatnik, which didn't have the collar to put those tabs onto. That's why it doesn't look right. "Lady Nightingale" is a fucking stupid name, clearly of Western origin. First of all, "nightingale" is male in Russian. Second, "lady" would not be used by Soviets. And third, while snipers were very much celebrities in the newspapers, they were not leaders, they had a specific job to do and were expected to do it. At most they had a sniper platoon they'd lead - but even then that's a Lieutenant rank at best. She could not be a leader for the common rabble, because she'd be part of the regular army and subject to authority of a company commander, taking orders from her Captain. Also, the Germans printing out posters of one specific sniper while they're encircled and starving is hilarious. Chekhov's "Show don't tell" clearly isn't something the writers of this stuff ever learned. And I must say, carrying a PPSh and a Mosin is impressive. Both are quite heavy weapons. PPSh is 4 kilograms when loaded. Mosin is 4,5 kilograms. Add to that the ammo. She's carrying at least 10 kilos of weaponry and switching between them willy-nilly. Even for a guy, that's quite impressive, for a short woman that's a hell of an achievement. So basically, it's the Hollywood insistence on praising individuals and "strong women" for the work of the collective that created this character, a pathetic parody of the real women of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army.
@rossmum
@rossmum Жыл бұрын
Early model telogreikas did have collars, they're just less commonly seen than the M1943 without. The collar tabs themselves were coloured by branch rather than just being red across the board (similar to Germany's Waffenfarbe system and continued by the Soviet Army after the war, for both collar tabs and shoulder boards). Magenta was the colour for infantry but generally is interpreted as red. I forget who *actually* had red during the war, later it was used for internal affairs troops. e/ Polina looks like she's wearing a shelter half. Both the German zeltbahn and Soviet plash palatka doubled as capes when not being slept under. That's genuinely what they look like when you wear them, bearing in mind you're literally wearing your tent over your shoulders with your head poked through.

About the red collar tabs during the Stalingrad mission, it could be plausible. The 1943 uniform (the introduction of which was decided Jan 15th) hadn't been issued to everyone yet, so collar tabs were still used to show rank and branch (red being the color of infantry). By 1941 "low visibility" tabs were introduced, but never completely replaced the colored ones.

So if Polina was so instrumental in "turning the tide of the war" (Which just takes a steaming fat shit all over the sacrifices of literal millions upon millions of Soviet soldiers and civilians who died either defending the city or were murdered by the Wehrmacht) Then surely she would be staying in the USSR for propaganda work. Almost all famous War Heroes, especially winners of the MoH or VC, were typically brought home to do things like warbond appeals or photoshoots or interviews to boost morale for those back home. I find it extremely unlikely a now highly decorated sniper would be allowed to run off to the Western Allies in some secret operation when she would be needed back home on the offensive into Germany.

Well, it's partially possible - Lyudmila Pavlichenko went to the US and Canada on a publicity diplomatic trip during the war. But note that in this very mission, there doesn't seem to be any command structure whatsoever that this woman fits into. She's a lone wolf, without assignment to a platoon like a normal sniper would be. Clearly the writers were too focused on having "the big hero" and entirely ignored the collective effort of thousands of soldiers. Typical Hollywood logic.

(At least I think it was the Gewehr 98, although according to the serial number, it was made in 1949 in Turkey). It is to this day one of my favourite rifles to shoot, even if I rarely get to as the owner lives multiple states away. And in spite of packing a punch, it was also less energy intensive to operate the bolt (due to the help of gravity for cock-on-close) when I tried to fire faster. Plus I did take it apart to clean it, and it makes you appreciate the small things and complexities that make the rifle truly shine. Plus it’s just outright gorgeous. Also, I loved the video! I'm beginning to think people that were charged in creation of this supposedly historical game don't actually give a damn or like history all that much. They were tasked with delivering bare fucking minimum since the last proper WW2 FPS across multiple theaters of operations (WHICH WAS OVER A DECADE PRIOR TO VANGUARD), and they couldn't even deliver on that by making so many mistakes or adding technology way earlier than it's created Don't get me started on CODWWII which focused solely on France/Normandy and is not what I'm looking for in a modern AAA first person shooter title. It's a massive bummer and shame that we lost Medal of Honor and Brothers in Arms. I mean there's Wolfenstein but it's alt history, and neither Postscriptum nor Hell Let Loose provide single player campaigns with high production value

the bit about the Soviet quality control being sub par is real. It's notable enough that people collecting Mosin-Nagant rifles like to get both pre- and during-war models because you can see where corners were cut. The rifles are functional, but there are a lot of rough spots where the machining or woodwork isn't so smooth. It's the difference between a 1932 rifle where the factory had plenty of time to finish each rifle, or 1943 where they were literally trying to get them out the door as fast as possible because they were mobilizing conscripts so fast. The sanding doesn't need to be perfect, the lacquer finish can be too thick or too thin, the bolt and barrel can show the machining marks instead of being polished, etc. It'll still shoot Nazis, so out it goes.

26:49 I wanted to play devil's advocate and say you could think of this as the MP43, not the STG44. What few MP43s there were *were* present on the eastern front. The 93rd Infantry Division was given some of them. The Waffen-SS also received some, but I can't find which units and where they were. But the 93rd Infantry Division, from what I can find, was not present in the Battle of Stalingrad. However, the 60th Infantry Division was. And the 271st Infantry Regiment "Feldherrnhalle" of the 93rd Infantry Division was taken from the 93rd and transferred to the 60th. Technically. See there's a problem. This happened in the Summer of 1943. Long after the Soviets defeated the Germans in Stalingrad. Oh and after the 60th was completely destroyed in said battle. The division was reformed as the Panzergrenadier Division "Feldherrnhalle". So not only was any unit equipped with the weapon not present for this battle, but the division that would later have some MP43s wasn't even the same one that *WAS* present in Stalingrad. The 60th Infanterie-Division and the Panzer-Division Feldherrnhalle were not the same division. Oh, and later the Panzer-Division Feldherrnhalle would itself be destroyed in the Minsk Offensive and then reformed by, I am not making this up, Panzer-Division Feldherrnhalle (1). Real original. 37:23 And I looked this up. They were MKb 42(H)s. I think that's what you meant. There was a total of 50 of them ever made, and 35 of them were dropped into the Kholm pocket. I get the character was intended to be a nurse, but, they didn’t had famous nurses in russia with a badass name? Same as the night witches? Don’t mind me, I just find that odd 😅 can’t wait the collaboration with the PowerPoint man 😂

9:35 that is in fact, an MG-34. Probably even worse when it comes to being " shoulder able" though.

THANK YOU for giving credit to Mark Ivanir! Dude has been in damn near every game with a russian voice and he could carry any game with his experience and talent. Also he's of Ukrainian heritage so no doubt we'll hear him some more in the delayed Ukrainian developed titles coming up. My friends like to point out that his slavic accent sounds fake because they hear him in every game, and when I point out that he's Ukrainian they just shut up.

They have a giant gunfight where they get shot dozens of times to get to an officer's meeting where both officers haven't heard a thing and are standing in the open, then they look at the officers instead of shooting at them because it would be too dangerous, then when the enemy is alerted, the friendo gets taken down by the first shot (instead of surviving it like the other times) and the girl fights her way through all those same enemies with a pistol only. Why didn't they just fire at the officer, seeing as they and their escort were obviously entirely deaf 😂

You really can’t expect any “AAA game” to take things seriously these days.

It's more of "Don't listen to devs who say their game is historically accurate/authentic" because it fucking won't be.

@@MLPIceberg There are many games out there that do try hard to be accurate though. It’s the big “AAA” devs that mostly ignore such stuff.

K98k is a beautiful weapon, felt great when I found one that has everything serial matched but the stock. The cycle catches a bit but thats to be expected on a 80+ year old rifle.
