One short thing you miss are the different modes you can choose in SCN mode (Special scenes) when tapping on Function Set Bottom: Portrait, Smooth Skin, Smart Shutter, Handheld NightScene, Low Light, Monochrome, Soft Focus, Fish-eye Effect, ... Most interesting. I just bought the SX 620 HS today and I am a bit annoyed it has an automatic mode only (which I was aware of before buying it). Maybe a bit frustrated, I took a look at your video and I was much surprised to see how clearly you went into the details of this 730 HS. I may return my camera within 15 days and choose a 730 HS they told me. Although more expensive I will think about it. And now you have 1 000 thumbs up! Congratulations!

Hey Janet, thanks for your kind feedback. Yes, I would say that the Canon SX730 is a great starter camera. Just keep in mind that it only shoots up to 1080 and not 4K. Alternatively, if you have a fairly modern mobile phone, then that could also be a great camera to use. I've shot multiple videos on both iPhone 6, iPhone 8 and now I'm using the iPhone 12 Mini. Thank you so much for the overview. I just purchased this camera. It was really helpful. Just a note: SCN (Scene mode) has other options besides the Toy option. I use the low light option quite a bit. There's Portrait, Smooth Skin, Smart Shutter to detect faces, Hand held night scene, Low Light, Monochrome, Soft Focus, Fish-eye effect, Miniature effect, Toy Camera, Super vivid, Poster effect and Fireworks.

I like to use the VGA setting when recording videos because they fit on the cd better when down loading. It is going to be a bear to find, I have a new 720XS coming in tomorrow by mail . It is going to take me a few minutes to learn how to set it on VGA recording.

I recommend using a tripod, a self timer and then set it to long exposure (open the shutter for longer to let in more light). Having said that, this camera probably won’t get you the best results shooting in low light conditions, but you can still give it a try.

Here it is again: ===== Hey, I've been using a SanDisk 32GB (40 MB/s) SD card in my Canon Powershot SX730HS, which has worked fine for me. Here is the closest that I could find on Amazon: amzn.to/31l7ftb If you're going to shoot loads and loads of footage, then get a larger SD card (64 GB or 128GB). The writing speed X MB/s is important so that the camera can write the data to the disc without a problem. As I said for me, the 40 MB/s card has worked perfectly, but I don't see an issue if you get a card that supports a faster speed. On the official user manual for this camera (www.canon.co.za/cameras/powershot-sx730-hs/specifications/), they state: Memory Card Type: Type SD, SDHC, SDXC (UHS Speed Class 1 compatible) Here is an interesting article to read: petapixel.com/2014/06/24/back-basics-difference-sd-sdhc-sdxc-best/ Here is an excerpt from that article: ======== "First off you might be asking yourself, ‘What is SD?’ SD stands for Secure Digital. SDHC? Secure Digital High Capacity. And SDXC? Secure Digital eXtended Capacity. Other formats include miniSD and microSD but your DSLR will not accept these. There is no quality/security difference between these three formats. Cards labeled SDHC usually have a capacity of 4GB - 32GB. SDXC formats can be very large and expensive. For the purpose of this guide, I am going to recommend that everyone stick with SDHC format. These cards have more than enough storage, even for the most trigger-happy shutterbug. You will see a Class 2,4,6 or 10 on SD Cards. This is the speed rating which measures maximum transfer speed for reading and writing images to and from a memory card, expressed as megabytes per second. Thanks for your comment. To transfer data from the camera to your laptop, you can either connect the camera via a USB cable, or you can remove the SD card and use an SD card reader. You can also use the Canon app to wirelessly transfer images.

@@Sean_Twomey Yes it seems that the SX740 HS is quite the same with a few upgrades. The settings look differently on the screen but after I watched your video twice I could follow along with what you were saying. The 4K video will be nice. I've practiced filming a video in 4K vs. not and I'm going to watch them on my PC to see what I notice differently. I do love taking pictures of everything honestly. I do ha e a smaller KZbin Channel so it will be for that then pictures. I don't understand the appeature or shutter speed. I get the idea but I will have to keep tweaking those settings and just like with video visually see the results to see the outcome of them all.

Hey, I've been using a SanDisk 32GB (40 MB/s) SD card in my Canon Powershot SX730HS, which has worked fine for me. Here is the closest that I could find on Amazon: amzn.to/31l7ftb If you're going to shoot loads and loads of footage, then get a larger SD card (64 GB or 128GB). The writing speed X MB/s is important so that the camera can write the data to the disc without a problem. As I said for me, the 40 MB/s card has worked perfectly, but I don't see an issue if you get a card that supports a faster speed. On the official user manual for this camera (www.canon.co.za/cameras/powershot-sx730-hs/specifications/), they state: Memory Card Type: Type SD, SDHC, SDXC (UHS Speed Class 1 compatible) Here is an interesting article to read: petapixel.com/2014/06/24/back-basics-difference-sd-sdhc-sdxc-best/ Here is an excerpt from that article: ======== "First off you might be asking yourself, ‘What is SD?’ SD stands for Secure Digital. SDHC? Secure Digital High Capacity. And SDXC? Secure Digital eXtended Capacity. Other formats include miniSD and microSD but your DSLR will not accept these. There is no quality/security difference between these three formats. Cards labeled SDHC usually have a capacity of 4GB - 32GB. SDXC formats can be very large and expensive. For the purpose of this guide, I am going to recommend that everyone stick with SDHC format. These cards have more than enough storage, even for the most trigger-happy shutterbug. You will see a Class 2,4,6 or 10 on SD Cards. This is the speed rating which measures maximum transfer speed for reading and writing images to and from a memory card, expressed as megabytes per second. Hi Sean, Thanks for the great Tutorial, I’ve had my SX730 a few days now & starting to get used to it but I find it odd that there is no Landscape Setting, or not one that I can find anyway.... The camera was bought as we are going to Austria on holiday & so a lot of the photos I will be taking will be of Mountains, Lakes etc, which setting would you recommend for this? Obviously I realise I can put it onto Auto but with other cameras I’ve had I always used the Landscape option for Scenery .... Thank you

Maxine Banner Hi Maxine, I would stick with Auto, as there is no dedicated landscape mode. If you’re unhappy with the results you get on auto, you could switch to either Tv, Av or M, but then you’ll need to manually set aperture and/or shutter speed. Enjoy your trip and happy shooting 😊🏞

We love this camera. Your video is great. We use this camera for lots of flower close ups and having problems keeping it in macro and getting a good focus. Exactly how does the macro work? Can you manually adjust the focus? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dennis Hodgkins - Hey Dennis, yes you can manually set the camera into Macro when you’re in manual mode, but I don’t actually believe you can focus manually. When the camera is on auto, then it automatically switches to macro mode when an object is close enough to the lens. I hope this helps. Happy shooting. Cheers, Sean

Hi Z K, thanks for your comment. I use a MacBook Pro and I've used iMovie, Screenflow and am currently editing in Final Cut Pro. If you're using a PC running windows, then there are various editing software options that you can use. You'd have to do some research. I hope that helps. Regards, Sean

Hey, I just switch the dial to video mode and shoot. You could probably set it to manual, change the settings and then record video using your custom settings, but to do that you would need to experiment. Generally I've been happy with just shooting my travel vlogs in the video setting. I hope that helps. Cheers, Sean
