Weird request, but could you do a video on Infinite Painter and Sketchbook Pro when you have time? I wanted to create a webtoon but I'm not sure which program would be best since I have Android and a Surface Pro (Microsoft only provides so much in that instance other than like Krita) and I'm not sure which app would be better in regards to open source programing. Procreate gives you to “sharpen”. So I recommend sharpening the final rendered Image and then save it as JPG with 150 or higher dpi. And it also often helped to use the ‘structure’ tool in Instagram itself before posting. :) great video tho. Cool to see the differences.

F I N A L L Y! The correct answer to all my (and I guess to many other) questions. Just set the sharpness to your image in Procreate and export it to jpg. I set mine canvas to 300 dpi and Instagram doesn’t mess the sharpness. Thank you! ❤

Just a quick reminder: If you use Instagram's promoting post feature. Instagram (for some reason) compresses the image after anyway. Even when you do this technique. So keep this in mind if you plan to "promote" your artwork there. I knew this trick before and it's nice to see you showing it to more people, Instagram's compressions suck so bad. Great video, as always!

Also posting multiple pictures in a single post deteriorates the quality even more. So if you want to post the speedpaint or reference picture along with your artwork, try posting it as a separate post. Like, I always post the speedpaint and reference picture in one post and post the finished artwork as another post.

I was making it "instagram size" from the beginning because I was scared people will steal the high resolution illustration to sell without credit. I didn't know people tried to upload FULL HIGH RES SIZE to get sharper images. I was confused receiving DMs asking me how I upload high res images lmao. Please don't do that, especially twitter because people can actually download high resolution images from there

I use a cheap desk lamp and a tv tray (I might need to use 2 to get rid of the shadow of my hand and phone) i remember seeing a video of taking photos of Gundams using 3 $10 Ikea flexible desk lamps.

This still helps for traditional art ! I generally rely a lot of daylight for images of my art with my smartphone, and I sliiightly sharpen them in PicsArt app. Slightly increased contrast. This makes traditional art display much better. Also Josh's tip of posting a close-up shot of art is something I did not think of before today - so that is great for catching people's eye.

I found good results by using the recommended resolution 1080x1080 or 1080x1350(portrait) compressed to a .jpg and aiming for roughly a file size of 250KB. You can probably push that to 350KB. Instagram like many other platforms employ aggressive compression to reduce file size so that images load fast. Doing some of the optimization for them is what I like to think this approach does. A compromise.

When you experiment, you need to change only 1 variable at a time so you can tell what actually makes the difference. Changing to 1080p and JPEG at the same time, or double-size and medium quality, muddies the waters. (Still, the video helps narrow things down for people.)

Hello! Comp Sci major know-it-all here! Just thought I'd let you know that there's actually a difference between SI prefixes and their computer counterparts. Because bits and by extension bytes operate on the power of 2 (Has to do with binary switches), 1 kilobyte isn't just 1000 bytes, it's 2^10 or 1024 bytes. 1 megabyte is 2^10 kilobytes or 1024 kilobytes, and so on. It's one of the reasons that when you look at the actually number of bytes on a disk or in a file, it's not a nice round number. The more you know!

In one of Angry Mikko's videos he says that he screenshots the painting on his phone, then uploads the screenshot with some sharpening to account for the compression that will happen. I haven't tried a side-by-side comparison, but the dummy account is a good tip that I will try out!

This was something that I struggled with understanding for a while until I redid my portfolio website. Often social media would downgrade the quality of my stuff and my website would lag, low and behold it was because my files were so large. I found that resizing my work (the largest side) to 2000px and then letting the software keep it proportional seems to work. I have work of different sizes and I make one full version for print then resize for web. I’ll actually try what you did and try the dummy account, I never thought to do that.

Hi! I’ve been trying to get the right pixels for an art work I did on procreate (the original canvas was 1443 x 1003 and another of 1951 x 1298) Ive tried different sizes and also brought the dpi down to 72 as a jpeg but it still won’t look good on Instagram. I also tried with lower pixels such as 911 x 608 but no results. Any advice from the masters ?

Those JPEG format options explained as it mostly has to do with browser compatibility. Baseline (Standard): Displays the image when it has fully downloaded. This JPEG format is recognizable to most web browsers. Baseline (Optimized): Optimizes color quality of the image and produces smaller file sizes (2 to 8%) but is not supported by all web browsers. Progressive (3 scans-5 scans): Downloads the image first as a low-resolution image, with incremental quality improvements as downloading continues.

I've noticed this as well. I went to my account on a friends phone though and non the thumbnails that were "blurry" on my phone were like that on his. Makes me think it only affects the account the phone is signed in on. (I noticed no other account having blurry thumbnails besides my own) would love to figure this out as well though.

Omg I struggle with this alot, The reg canvas size that I would draw at is 10000 pixels wide and 10000 pixels tall. When Id post my work at this dimension, Id notice that the quality would significantly drop. Something that I regularly do is use the app photoshop express to make the image smaller and then post it on instagram with dimensions of 2000 by 2000 pixels.

1:19 not to be rude or anything, but this image looks so weird. The entire character`s posture gives me a feeling like she`s about to fall down, because her entire torso is tilted towards the other side, she is leaning with her body , but supposed to be standing without support and it gives me weird vibes. Plus, leg anatomy feels off on this piece: her knees are asymmetrical and give an impression as if she`s a doll being composed with different leg parts. I think this could have been fixed with a good silhouette practice and by flipping canvas sides :> Or maybe you can put her left leg a bit closer to the right side, so her face and toe will be approximately on the same level if you would cross a line from her face right to her toes I hope you or the other will find it useful

I agree with you, however, the reason I have posted this critique is because how basic this art mistake is. He as a professional artist and supposed to know all that silhouette, leaning down/falling thing, since it`s his bread and butter, it`s like fixing a mistake of a Math teacher. I am not gonna lie or deny that the rendeing in his portaits is cool and decent, but when it comes to poses even my non-artist friends can tell that the "figure looks off". That`s why I have added "not to be rude" and spent time writing this out, because he teaches other people and wants sthem to improve in the way I want him to do so as well.
