There are a bunch of muscles in the back of your neck which help lift your head up. There are back muscles, and back muscles that become neck muscles, and neck muscles that are head muscles. I want to tease the big muscles apart a little bit so I can understand what's going on here better and why I might get a pain in the neck from riding my bike for long periods.
I know I can see some of these muscles on anatomical models. How many can I find and describe?

once again, I find this is perfect revision for the exams... the wet lab exams require an astute and very immediate recognition of the muscles, attachments, angiology and innervation and the cervical region would have to be the most complex. Sam provides an easy explanation and elucidates the details of structures using the models - you can stare at the reference texts for hours without gaining the understanding provided here in 24 minutes. Thank you

Flexion use the mandible or should say 'tip if chin' to guide the movements. Extention use the tip of the nose to move the skull and folding or contraction of the nap muscles. When return to original position, breathe out and release, let the muscle tensions release and return to original position freely, then adjust with intentions. Try to use less pulling of the muscles.

As a cyclist and an anatomist how do you keep pressure off your pudendal nerve and artery. I am worried about damaging the pudendal nerve and artery from sitting on the perenium and loosing funtion and sensation in my genitals.

I will start out with I’m correcting my posture. I’ve had years and years of holding not only my own babies but family members babies and I remember my upper back where the cervical means the thoracic would take any time I would feed my brand new babies. Cut the 12 years later here I am with costochondritis. My upper traps feel like they are on fire most days. I’m getting conflicting answers. I’m getting that they are too tense and I need to stretch them or I’m getting answers like they are too weak and I actually need to engage them and strengthen them even though they feel like bricks! My scalene‘s on the right side typically feel irritated especially when I exhale. Yesterday I had a family member who is a massage therapist do some deep stretching on both my traps and my scalenes. Now they do feel better but I know that’s a temporary fix probably. How can I tell whether or not my muscles are sore from weakness or from overuse? I want to make sure I’m not stretching weak muscles. And whether or not I should actually be strengthening but I also don’t want to strengthen and overworked muscle if that makes sense. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you very much! I think there should be one correction though at 9:33: the sternocleidomastoid muscles do not bring the chin to the sternum (flexion) - they bring it away from the sternum (dorsal extension). Right?

Doubt you’ll see this … but if I want to thicken my neck (Pencil neck), which neck muscles would I need to focus on? My rear back muscles seem minimal so always thought i need to focus on the upper traps with shrugs, but maybe it’s not best focus to achieve a wider neck all round, back and sides?
@myralhf

My question is then...how does one build or strengthen these muscles? Anyone...? My sense is to keep the back muscles strong to support the neck.

while we r talking about "pain in the neck", don't forget inlaws as causation. though seeing them twice yearly, I contend that Inlaws actually originate in the neck area but inserted in the glut, hence the pain in the neck can radiate down to the "arse". For the longest time, marketers could not explain the correlations between turkey sales and that of aspirin at X'mases and Thanksgivings, now they can.
