I get it. Clowns are scary, invade your dreams, and can scar a person for life. But what if said clown just wants to be a Royal? And their voice resonates like an angels? And he's disarmingly funny? And he's backed by Postmodern Jukebox's supreme sound?
PMJ and Puddles is at it again with a fantastic cover of "Royals" by Lorde. I had no idea how they were going to pull this off, but the dastardly clown found a way!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Postmodern Jukebox featuring Puddles Pity Party performing "Royals”.

I worked at a venue where Puddles did a show a few years ago. The guy who was setting up the video system for the show couldn't get it right, so I was called in to fix it. I met Puddles, we chatted for a few, and then I got the system working right. During the show, he would go out into the audience, grab a person, bring them onstage, and do a song for them. It usually ended up with him singing Hapy Birthday to them, but he would call them Kevin. Anyway, he came out into the audience, grabbed me, took me onstage, and slid a costume on me. He then sang something (I couldn't hear what it was since he used in-ear monitors.) After that, he sang Happy Birthday to me, called me Kevin, then whispered into my ear, "You rock." Big Mike, the guy who plays Puddles, is one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet!

@@BigChuckMeister Puddles wasn't being a sore loser at all. He always runs offstage at the end of that song. You can see it at the end of this video and find him doing the same thing in news appearances well before he was on AGT. It's just part of the bit. He is a clown, after all.The guy is a pro and pure class. @@chriskwakernaat2328 It was. I personally don't think it was the best choice, simply because he'd already done the "unexpected song from young female artist" bit with "Chandelier." His version of "I Want You to Want Me" (perfect for the persona) or his Chris Cornell tribute "When I'm Down" would have worked better IMO.

All this in the package of a crooning juggernaut with a timeless voice. I keep going back to his covers of songs I don't like from bands I avoid: Coldplay's "Fix you", and MCR's "Helena", and Abba's "Dancing Queen" are songs I turn my nose up at, but somehow Puddles makes them amazing. Just discovered your channel today. Thank you for what you do. This song and your reactions brought tears to my eyes. I have very visceral reactions to music (movies as well) and often feel "wrong" about it. Most people I know don't show outwardly how it makes them feel. I love to dance and sing and don't have many outlets for it outside of my shower. It's gratifying to see you express yourself so openly.

You need to finish the PML & Puddles songs with "All the Small Things" by Blink-182. But if you want a surprise, he did a Smoosh-up of "My Heart Will Go On" (Celine Dion) and "One" Metallica. Finally, if you want what Puddles calls a "sad-gasm," he covered "Helena" by My Chemical Romance.

i love his takes on "all the small things" & "helena" in particular as well! the first time i ever truly *heard* the words to "helena" was when i first heard puddles cover the song. watching this just reminded my how much i appreciate the heck outta his enunciation; it adds such a distinctive touch to his vocals, as many contemporary artists seem to be going for the opposite aesthetic. i also am fond of his rendition of "where is my mind" (first time i could hear ALL the lyrics in that song, haha), & his various tom waits' covers hold a special place in my heart. ♥️

Puddles is the best. It's interesting how his clown persona is part of the performance. Would the whole thing work as well if he were just a guy in a suit singing the same song? I don't think so. This is not a knock on his singing, at all. He'd still be amazing. But the clown angle adds something, doesn't it?

@The Charismatic Voice - When you spoke of P3's enunciation and keeping his vowels aligned in the mask, I heard that P3 has that oldschool pre-mic-everything, sing-it-to-the-cheap-seats Broadway voice in his ample toolbox. Those backward covered tones you spoke of get accoustically swallowed by the rows and rows of padded audience bodies. At points in his performances, P3 gives a delightful reminder of Ethel Merman with his bright forward tone, and when he opens up. Give Merman's "There's No Business Like Show Business" a quick listen. Broadway voice developed another technique to mix volume with expression, a sung "stage whisper", allowing "soft" emotional phrases to still be heard and understood in the third balcony. I can't help hearing some of this in P3's flawless enunciation. trivia: Where stage actors and vocalists developed techniques to sound soft while still projecting, oldschool-trained movie/TV actors developed an opposite technique to simulate different levels of shouting, using rasp, gravel and fry, to not distort their lines or blow out the soundman's ears. They actually practiced for hours in front of a mic and gauges. It sounds like the needles should all be pinned to the top but are actually steady in the middle of the normal speech range.

You really owe it to yourself to see the live show if you ever get a chance. He does a lot to build up the music that doesn't get conveyed online. I fully expect intense, emotional musicality to become a faction in clowning and mimery for the history of the arts moving forward. After all, it would be a shame if our grandchildren didn't get to experience what he does.
