Thanks for this! I’m growing Kennebecs in 35L pots in the Toronto area. Your video just reminded me to wait until the foliage dies back before I harvest, thank you!

You're welcome! I hope you have a great harvest. I've always enjoyed harvesting potatoes.

Jim, thanks to you, 🧄I just might try growing potatoes in grow bags next year even though I don't eat many of them. Yesterday one of my daughters came to visit after she got off work and I was able to send some onions, peppers, and a cucumber home with her (and all the Sun Sugar tomatoes that she could eat). It's such a good feeling to give produce away to family, friends, and neighbors. I hope you and Mrs. Midwest Gardener have a great weekend. ~Margie🤗🥒🧅🍅

Thanks Margie! I totally agree about it feeling good to be able to give some fresh produce away. I remember my dad used to load use up with tomatoes every time we went over there in the summer. So not only are you giving some good things to eat away, but you are making some memories. Have a great weekend!

We are growing potatoes for the first time this year. We have three 25 lb grow bags and most of raised bed planted with Kennebecs. Looking forward to seeing what kind of harvest we get. The weather has been very different this year, but there is always hope.

That’s a good little crop for your bag. Last weekend I pulled the potatoes from one of my big pots in the garden and got a decent little harvest. Today my goal here in Iowa before the next rain is to pull my in ground potatoes. The vines all look done so I am hoping I will find a nice little crop.
@MidwestGardener5 ай бұрын
Thanks! Good to hear that you got a good crop from yours too. I hope the inground ones do well for you too.

Yes thank you. The in ground plot gave me more than I expected considering our crazy weather this summer.

I also dug my potatoes too early…they should have been done but were still forming lots of little potatoes. Every year is different. Great video Jim.

Your harvest was pretty good. It was better than my harvest. It's hard to wait until the foilage dies back all the way. I bought expensive seed potatoes and got skunked. They ended up with potato scab. Very small and not edible. I was disappointed for sure especially because of the cost. I got better results from grocery store potatoes. Those little potatoes are good in a pot of green beans. Take care and have a great weekend.
@MidwestGardener5 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear about the potato scab, Shirley. That is always disappointing. PH too high can cause that to be worse. My son had the same results with his potatoes. The store bought ones did better. We like those little ones in green beans too. Have a great weekend!
@shirleyk6235 ай бұрын
@@MidwestGardener I heard that about the PH. I tested the grow bags. One was neutral and one was alkaline, if those home tests are reliable. Oh well there's always time to plant another crop. I have that soil sun solarizing, maybe it will help.

Lookin good Jim, mine didn't do very well this year. Some kind of bugs ate the foilage so bad they all died at about 50 days, they were about the size of a golf ball
@MidwestGardener5 ай бұрын
Thanks Steve! Sorry to hear about the bugs. Blister beetles ate quite a few of the leaves on ours. They left enough to keep them going though. Maybe next year will be better.

Im leaving my potatoes in the ground just to dig as i need them. I don’t have any cool dark storage.

Good idea. I've never tried that, but it should work.

You'll always have new potatoes coming. When the leaves die it's game over. Did you find for 10 gallon. Those new potatoes make are perfect for stew. If you want more potatoes out of one bag, plant up one of those grow bags in the greenhouse. Put a cheap LED UFO grow light right over the top. Set the timer for 16 hours on in 16 hours off. Start the light how about the first day of August and then grow them as long as you want. Set the timer down to 12 hours on in 12 hours off when you get ready to harvest. Wait till the foliage dies back. Then harvest potatoes. You grow that long enough and that bag will be full of potatoes. Guess what you still have those new potatoes in there. 🤔 keep the temperature around that bag at least 60°. The grow light will put up heat to keep to help you. If you get real cold in the winter, throw a clear piece of 4 Mill plastic over the top like a teepee, the light inside

In 50 gallon bags
@MidwestGardener5 ай бұрын
You should be able to grow a bunch in those. I used to use 25 gallon bags, but they took so much soil to fill. And they were hard for me to move around also. Good luck!

Good Morning Jim - Quite a nice haul you got in that bag. Have not harvested mine yet as they are still green so letting them go a little longer. What is the best method of storing them long term in your experience? Have you ever grown enough to last you until the next harvest? Can't wait for fall to get here for the cold weather crops to start growing. Have a wonderful weekend..
@MidwestGardener5 ай бұрын
Good morning Sue. We never grow very many potatoes, so I've never experimented with storage. My grandparents used to store theirs in a homemade root cellar. I'm ready for fall too. Have a great weekend!

I think it was the last year or year before, you had a relatively better harvest. Is it like this variety doesn’t produce much or something else? Enjoy the hash browns, mate. Stay blessed!

Thanks! Kennebec usually does pretty well for me. Just had some hashbrowns yesterday :) Have a great weekend!

Those are Maine Potatoes? Kennebec is the next county over! I planted some old spuds for giggles pulled one out last week, it was hard and tough, didn't like it. End of september I'll dig it all up and see what I have. Next spring I'll fill the planter with my compost and companion plant onions and garlic with the potatoes. After I divide that rhubarb out I'll throw some garlic and onions in with the rhubarb too. I read the onion and garlic were great companions for rhubarb and potato where I replant to rhubarb is a sunnier location is where strawberries will go and harvest from the old rhubarb
@MidwestGardener5 ай бұрын
When I bought the seed potatoes, they were labeled as Kennebec. I'm far from a potato expert, so that's all I know about them. Sounds like you have some pretty good plans for next year.

How did you fertilize that growbag please? I like smooth skinned potatoes over the rough russet types. Nice harvest!

I remember as a kid in Maine picking potatoes at night in late fall by full moon or tractor lights in a big rush before deep frost. Nothing more sickening than a nasty rotten smelly potato that turned to slime! 🤣🤢🤮 😂 Wipe your hand off in the soil!

Those sound like some pretty special memories. Yep, those rotten potatoes aren't good at all.
