At 14:30: The name "China" came from the first dynasty that unified all of China, the Qin Dynasty, whose original powerbase was the western part of central China. If you have ever read the Romance of the Three Kingdoms or played Total War Three Kingdoms, basically the western realm down to Chengdu was the Qin Dynasty's original power base, which is why it was super important for Liu Bei to take those lands (easy to defend and highly productive). The dynasty that everyone sees in Victoria 3 is actually the last imperial dynasty of China, the Qing Dynasty. The Qing Dynasty was actually established by the Manchus whose original power base is the area we call Manchuria all the way in Northeast China.

@pacer2310

I'm still skeptical. I bought it. Cannot recommend. Just play Viccy 2 with some mods. This game is a slick coat of paint on a turd. Primarily complaint is as a capitalist economy you no longer incentivize capitalist pops to build factories for you - even in a free economy, you're an authoritarian state that chooses what to be built, how much, when, etc. It has all the illusions of complexity with multiple menus and what not, but it's not doing anything interesting. Oh, I'm sure it'll be fine after 20+ DLC packs over 10 years or whatever. Once the game costs $400 or subscribing (hah!) to paradox's live service it may be an okay game. It's even a serviceable GSG - but as a successor to Victoria 2, it doesn't even come close.

@@pacer2310 Also it's way too easy. The liberal industrialist route is just the superior strategy, so every nation will feel the same after 10 or so years. Also there are not many different events. I had the same event pop up 5 times in the first 30 years or so.

@@pacer2310 capitalists still build factories you just get to pick what and where, which I think is a good addition, is it entirely realistic, no, but plenty of times in Vic 2 they will build useless factories

I did a Japan play through pretty much right before you uploaded the first episode, but the only main problem I've run into (same with other civs) is problems regarding not having enough employees for industry later on. @@ianh3385 from what I was seeing in game, it looked like there was one group specialized pop that kept going around to different industries in the same state If the wage ever got low so I never had enough to keep all employed. Great series, hope you feel better. FWIW, I would be very interested in a playthrough that is "pacificist" in some way. I know it's odd but that's how I play civ, I avoid conflict unless provoked and just use it like a city builder. This game looks really cool, but I wonder if it's possible to do that with this.

Love where you're talking about moderate is "ok" for the shogunate leader. I'm currently playing Japan and have had nothing but traditionalists. Couldn't pass colonial affairs (before Russia took Ainu), definitely can't abolish serfdom. Every good law makes the shogunate mad. In the 60's now, and they're finally not powerful, because I somehow rammed abolish serfdom through and got trade. Digging out of the economic hellhole they had me in now. Lovin' this series. Helping me out a lot. So glad you branched out from Civ. I hope you keep it up at least part time.

"Couldn't pass colonial affairs (before Russia took Ainu)" Yeah I've restarted as Japan a stupid number of times trying to find a game where Russia doesn't colonize Ainu before I've even unlocked colonization. I couldn't find one. Potato got extremely lucky in getting a jingoist shogunate leader and a peaceful Russia. Very frustrating "tutorial" imo.

I was able to abolish serfdom in the late 30s. Not sure if that's good or bad. Shogun clout is still high (47.3), but no rebellions. Haven't been able to pass any health system or education reforms because my bureaucracy is so low. My gold reserve is 1.3 mil, but I'm at -3.25K balance. If I try to build up bureaucracy I'll go bankrupt. So I have to build other stuff to balance it out... but it takes WAY too long. 😭

Some remarks: 32:35 "Prussia is not a nation with a Army, it is a Army with a Nation!" If you did not play them as conquerors, you did not understand how to play Prussia! - I am guessing this start is particularly hard. Not only do you have limited resources - meaning any new consumers drastically increase the price - you also seem cut off from any international trade, which could probably normally offset those issues. - of course on the other hand, lack of international market can be a asset. People are currently limited to consuming the goods that your economy can produce. If they did have access to the worldwide market, a lot of your economies money would be send overseas for all the stuff you don't produce locally. Which is exactly what happened with the UK, leading up to the Opium wars - the "Distribution of Power" laws are like Stellaris Living Standards. It appears pops are a good mechanic - except for Stellaris

You can get a ton of stuff done as Japan if you are willing to pray to RNGesus and reroll until you get a Shogunate IG leader with Jingoist. That lets you use the clout and legitimacy of the Shogunate against itself for the beginning of the game and then move into a Buddhist Monk government. Get serfdom abolished with a few good rolls and you can do a Komei restoration like 10 years before the historical Meiji restoration.

build one construction sector in each province to start, once you can afford it of course, but it will start to snowball very quickly. Playing US right now and got 1167 construction in 1902. If I'm fighting a war, it can really hurt, but in peace, omg so much economy go brrrrr. Think I started out around 60-75 construction to start after I built up right at the beginning and then it just kinda kept going. Make profit, build more construction, make profit, more construction, repeat. Only thing that really hurts can be war if you have a massive modern army like I do ( both construction and army are about 1 million each, I can afford one, not both at the same time) and embargoes. Don't become a pariah like I did. Pretty sure the US is going to be the target of WWI in this world.

It just seems a little too easy compared to you colonizing the connected land up north vs an island miles away. I also feel like if you write out what you are doing in Japan, you can follow it for every country, even African ones, and be fine. I'm missing some individuality per country, even just the big ones

I'm torn on this game. I really really like the economical aspect, it's well done and deep. But the warfare and politics are just so barebones. The AI is rather stupid overall and the game is far too easy. I became an economic powerhouse and a liberal paradise in Chile in the first 40 years or so, while even Britain with the highest standard of living of the AI world had about 5 points less than me. It's also rather boring that one internal strategy, the industrial liberal one, is clearly superior to any other strategy, like agrarian or becoming a dictator. If you run anything else, you're shooting yourself in the foot. Stellaris for example has several different strategies to progress in the game, at least they got stronger in the last year or so.
