I conducted this piece in 1988 in northern California. It was one of my big desires in life to put on a performance of this concerto. Back then my daughter Emily, though only 7, attended the concert with her other sisters. She passed away on Nov. 8, 1996 at age 11. Today it's Nov. 8, 2022. When I hear Poulenc's organ concerto I recall better times, though there is deep sadness. Rest in peace Emily.

I urge those who don't know much of Poulenc to explore his music. I have a special soft thing for French music and I guess I know well all Poulenc's work. He has no enormous, majestic stuff like Mahler or Shostakovitch but all his compositions are like precious little gems that you will learn to cherish. Try the piano concerto, or the two pianos concerto to start. If you get caught there are several more to enjoy. I'm a humble scientist with an enorm frustation that is not beeing able to play an instrument or conduct an orchestra (my dream!). When I see a musician playing his instrument to perfection I rest in awe! But what can I say when I see a lady playing a tirannosaurus of an instrument with three keyboards for the hands and another, enormous, for the feet and, by some sort of miracle, conjures enough muscular control to play all those keys without fail and create fantastic music! God save her.Perhaps next life I will be able to do somethnig like that....

I heard this concerto on a gramophone record for the first time c. 1966 (Bert Zamkochian). Since then I have always considered it to be the most beautiful piece of music ever composed. Up till now there hasn't been a good video on KZbin. It is especially nice to see and hear something bigger than a chamber orchestra in this work. Do yourselves a favour and view ms. Apkalna playing the organ at the Latvian song festival - a stunning, moving event, where they also sing the Lord's Prayer as composed by Luciya Garuta. By the way, listen to the viola solo at 22.27.
@Mezzotenor5 жыл бұрын
Viola solo, actually. (Then next solo, though the camera misses it, is by the cello.) Otherwise I TOTALLY agree - the performance in Riga, Latvia with the Kremerata Baltica is equally special. That's what's so great about this work - it can be adapted to different sizes of instruments and string orchestras.
@gerhardg51862 жыл бұрын
@@Mezzotenor Thank you for the correction.
@rolandmeyer37294 ай бұрын
@@Mezzotenor It is true that F. Poulenc's score notates a viola solo followed by a cello solo, near the end of this masterwork. However, per the conductor's discretion, this viola solo may be substituted with a *UNISON VIOLA DUO* without violence, injury, or disrespect to the piece. I know this is true because I was one of those two violists nearly 50 years ago!

Marie Claire Alain was a very well known organist of international repute. I once attended a service at the church of Seint Germain en Laye, France, where she lived and was playing that day. She treated the congregation to an accoustic display as the choir exited and we all broke out in spontaneous applause at the end! Organists usually have to be rather modest, secreted away in the loft of a church. It was great to see the soloist so prominent here

Steven Conrad I played this (1st violin) about the time you first heard it. Practicing it without the organ was a bit challenging due to the complex rhythms and pauses etc. Then we went into the Memorial Hall at Manchester Grammar School (1200 seat venue with a massive organ) to rehearse it with the soloist. Blew me away and from the stage the organ was soooo loud from those opening passages and it all came together on the night. A full house. It was buzzing. The soloist went onto be an Oxbridge Organ Scholar I believe. Unforgettable part of growing up with a decent orchestra. When can we get to experience this sort of thing again? Couple of years away I expect. Now all I can do is practice in my conservatory. Good job I didn’t turn professional as my brilliant violin teacher wanted me to. He was from the BBC Northern SO I recall. Halcyon days...

A revisit. Powerful, and presented on the single instrument than can blow the whole orchestra off the map. Fortunately, the great composers working with the instrument and their interpreters would not exploit the power of the instrument in such an arrogant way.
