Damn thats a lot of work. Not familiar with chrome plating removal but media blasting wont take it off?
@MarkK01 Жыл бұрын
Can't you sandblaster the chrome off? It probably would have been cheaper for the dealership to supply its customer with new wheels. I really hope you charged the dealership for your time and materials instead of cutting them a break.
@nikkothegreat7839 Жыл бұрын
It's tough to blast off plus the chrome holds electricity so the blaster will be getting shocked lol

A local custom chrome plater will likely be able to chemically strip (Nitric acid) the copper/nickel/chrome leaving only the aluminum substrate. If they aren’t equipped, they should have a connection to a biz that is. It’ll be $65-125/wheel. I have a custom chrome plating shop and we do powder coating as well.

So I got a set of wheels in for chrome strip/PVD coat that looked familiar; they are identical to this set! Same nasty corrosion too. Is it possible the same set of wheels ended up at a Chrome Plater in Indiana? They are bare aluminum now and need a lot of metal finishing work to look decent before recoating with anything

Bravo! Thanks for continuing the trade. To those that say they have no platers locally, seriously, try finding a plater in Alaska.

Hey you said it run when people bring theses things to you.iv been powder coating since 1993 and Crome in a no no. How ever I do coat it with the under standing that I will not guarantee it. Great job but folks won’t pay for all the work you have done to get them right. I really enjoy your videos keep them coming and God Bless

What about Harley parts because you know they want their chrome blacked out lol powder coated a lot of Harley engine covers with no warranty
@UltralydvaskingLillehammer Жыл бұрын
wow i am amazed how much time you have put into these rims, lots of dedication . I have a shop in lillehammer Norway where we do a lot of vapour blasting, ultrasonic cleaning and Cerakote on engine parts . we stopped with peeling chrome too , if you try to wet or dry blast it will not give good results, the chrome is much harder than the alu or cast iron underground , this results in that you blast away the (softer) rim material next to the chrome , which results in a moon landscape

I have a GT bicycle that is chrome peeling, im going to try n do the same. Grind it than sand blast it.

ive been considering the dustless blasting system for a while now, this right here only solidifies that decision, watched a guy go through the chrome and nickel layer in seconds in an area the side of you hand

Try a 3m scotch-brite clean&strip xt pro disc on the grinder. works well on the chrome peeling.

I watched both videos. Brutal. I just recently got into powdercoat. I had no idea that powdercoat chrome looked as real as it does for such a good price. It makes life easier. I've done metallurgical samples since 2009. A good reflective metal finish takes a lot of work. Sure, powdercoat isn't EXACTLY like chrome, but sometimes, good enough really is good enough, with way less work and expense.

Almost need to deplate them, chrome is extremely hard, and very hard to grind off.

Acid dip 30% acid to distilled water takes the chrome off. Sand blast and powder coat. Dip a few hours. I do this process on my zinc plating works awesome. I’ve scuffed sanded and sandblasted just like you. Two years it’s coming off. But I guess after it’s sold who cares right???

When you are hot flocking are the parts still hooked up to ground and the powder electrically attracted to the wheels or are you relying solely on the heat?
@RightNowPowderCoating2 жыл бұрын
Always a good idea to have ground connected, it creates a safer powder coating environment. Power would be attracted to the part due to the ground but extra powder sticks from heat. So it builds up faster.

I have been working on a set of steel wheels for a while, between working and doing favors and a few side jobs. With that said; They have the " new" right out of the box, flat powdercoat, cleaned, then superchrome powder, then transparent blue on top. Im starting to develope issues with static adhesion of the powder. Its leaving patterns of my wiping cloth and naptha solvent. Is there something I should be doing to neutralize the wheel. I feel like Im creating static patterns when I wipe the wheel clean. Whats happening? Have you ever had problems with airbrushing or painting then clear powdercoating over top?
@417plasma62 жыл бұрын
should dustless blasting take care of that ? I seen videos on how it tears apart the wheel down to bare metal..as iv'e done wheels and have to sand down areas of course, but with less stress or less cost for you....so what was the total hours and cost for the wheels ?
@70ixlr867 ай бұрын
Sad a chroming shop didn't see the rims before them coming to you. A plating shop would completely strip the failing coating. You should have gotten back raw castings. The epa doesn't like vats of acid in any environment, even trained regulated ones. So they leave mild acids and grinders to spread it all over the place.
@jaybee11582 жыл бұрын
So I’m new to wanting to learn all this to add to my resume if you will.. other then just plain steel rims that have no color to them. Other then cleaning them do I have to prep it as well like if I’m really gonna paint .. or do I do that if there’s already paint on them? Or should I just think of powder coating literally like I’m really painting.. that no matter what I have to prep, sand,paint,sand then paint again.? I just want to be clear bcuz I’ve seen so many videos and there’s not 1 way there doing it .. a couple I’ve seen them stripping paint off of what and/or cleaning the parts then just spraying, oven and then that’s it…
