Great video! I use #9 to clean the bore, followed by a light coating of Rem oil. If The gun is going to be in storage for a longer period, I use Ballistol instead of the Rem oil.

I use CLP for lightly fouled guns. Works good and makes life simpler. I keep a bottle of hoppes 9 on hand for guns that are real dirty.

Good video. Fair test. For many years I have used Hoppe's #9 as the bore solvent, also to clean the actions, triggers, bolts, hammers, trigger areas. brush, then a cloth patch, then a thin coat of oil (Outers, Rem Oil, and recently some "3 in1" oil,,, probably the oldest "C-L-P" on the market. Sadly, my local hardware store owner told me a few months ago that "3-in-" oil is no longer being made. 😪 Put it on exposed metal and the trigger/action, hammer, bolt, breach areas. Not a huge amount, but a thin coat.

Hoppes is a powder solvent. If you use Hoppes to clean your gun, then you need to follow that with a lubricant (like maybe LSA) and also with a rust preventative (like maybe Brownells No. 2). That was the old traditional gun-cleanging regimen with three different fluids, one for each purpose. By comparison, Break Free and Ballistol are both CLP-type products that "clean, lubricate, protect" and replace all three fluids with one bottle. However, they don't perform any of those functions as well as a dedicated product. It's a compromise. Personally, I find that Ballistol is perfectly adequate for routine use, but I do keep more powerful cleaners on hand for those situations where a gun is badly fouled.

Hoppe's No. 9 has been around longer than any of us have been alive. It's what I've used since I was a teen and I see no reason to stop. My biggest question is what gives it that amazing scent............I'm not a smoker but if they come out with a Hoppe's Cigar I might start.
@357magdad3 жыл бұрын
They used to sell Hoppes air fresheners! I think you can still find them on ebay.
@WildWing-wl7nj7 жыл бұрын
Actually it seemed like Hoppes did best. Not surprising, after decades. I would continue using Hoppes for the cleaning, and then if you want to use the others for a bit of lube, that's ok. But I've yet to see a better cleaner than Hoppes.

soapy water with ammonia works better on corrosive...why no test here?
@357magdad3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I think the soapy water + ammonia is used with black powder and surplus corrosive ammo. I don't have anything like that to test, I only use modern smokless powder.
@chadhaire17113 жыл бұрын
@@357magdad Yes but if you burned a small pile of black powder on bare metal and sprayed Ballistol (who claims to dissolve corrosive), BreakFree (which did better on rust in your tests) and soapy water with a bit of ammonia on each metal plate it would make a great corrosive test. You already have all these lubes and other supplies from previous videos....all you would need is get is a small jar of black powder....you could probably borrow some. Even if you had to buy powder you would be out only a few bucks. There are a lot of black powder shooters out there who would watch the video.

a modern one using Ed's red with Kerosene instead of lamp oil. lamp oil may not be reactive enough as it does not flash off as well and takes longer to burn. I would say it works but I would increase the dose 10% or more and expect the formula to work more slowly. camp fuel #3 is better. I also add a few ounces of Amyl acetate (for odor but it is a solvent also) and lanolin in place of whale oil. Also.... the society of machinists did extensive testing on penetrating oils a while back with off the shelf and home brew. Kroil came in first but only by a hair too close to call thing... what almost beat it was simply 50/50 acetone/atf I believe the Ed's penetrates to the pores of the metal and lifts fouling while also protecting. I have all the CLP's in the test and they just sit now some being 5 years old or older. I make the Ed's by the gallon and it does not sit. everyone I know wants a quart or two. Imagine what a quart of inferior hoppes would cost much less a gallon LOL. Also...if you have not tried this with your guns... I cast almost all my bullets then coat with HT but you can buy cast bullets already coated.... you have to try em if you have not already. no smoke from the bullet lube.... slightly less pressure with a tad more velocity.... EASY cleanup. I shoot .357... 44mag...45 acp and 30 carbine handguns. no leading at all and very light fowling... Ed's red and Ht coat... unbeatable. I finally convinced some magazine writers (the young ones) to try coated bullets in testing. In their testing the coated bullets were always a bit more accurate and a bit faster and... they all said how clean the guns stayed.

@@357magdad Looking at your other video kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2SmZqRjidCmsNU In my opinion Ballistol Cleans better but has less lubricant. Break Free has Less Cleaner and more lubricant. Im going with BreakFree ,,,I never leave my guns sit in storage dirty ,I clean them the same day I Shoot them. So i do not need a heavy cleaner . I go to the range less often than I want to , so longer storage (more lubricant) When I go to the range its for a long time and many rounds will be fired (more lubricant) Better lubrication the less likely Gun powder residue will stick to the parts of the gun. So cleaning is easy and shouldn't need a heavy cleaner. If I store the guns dirty or if the environment was rough. I then go with hoppes bore cleaner and use Break Free LP or Break Free CLP Afterwords. Thanks for the upload buddy very helpful !

Hoppes #9 is still hard to beat. Not sure why people use balistol, I have it and it smells worse, cleans worse and leaves a film, does not break down copper either and it might cost more too. Pay more get less. I think maybe Balistol might be better on rubber O rings in pellet guns.

Thank you, this is a well made comparaison. I don't have black powder at home and I don't want to open a bullet, can you make a test for me ? Pour some powder in a recipe Burn the powder Spray Ballistol in the recipe Wait 24h I've heard that the residues becomes a white liquid stuff with Ballistol, and I would like to know if its true or not. Because there is a lot of discussion about overspraying ballistol that can track residues in firing pin and cause malfunction and stuff. And if ballistol dissolves powder to make it a liquid stuff then there is no problem having a few ballistol in the firing pin bloc. Thank you again :)
