To achieve grade 9 you need to: 1. Have ‘banked’ poems with pre-prepared analysis which will fit the question no matter what 2. Use the FOTTE method to compare the poems and ensure you’re referring back to the poet’s purpose, as well as adding in 1/2 alternative interpretations 3. Write Is there anything else? Also, which other poems would you recommend to learn inside out? Thanks, another great video.

Hiya! I tutor students doing the poems, I always recommend learning Checking Out Me History, London, Ozymandias, Storm On The Island and Exposure. I'd also suggest you improve your general poetry analysis, so that if you get a poem you don't know inside out (like My Last Duchess last year), then you can quickly analyse it without too much stress!

The theme question for an inspector calls was : how Priestley uses the inspector to show that that society needs to change (something like that) and for the unseen poetry it was kamakaze and how conflict effects the lives of people or something which compared well with checking out me history as u said.

Obviously doesn't mean you need to religiously follow and believe his every word and use every single one of his ideas. Use either exposure or storm on the island. Exposure has lots of personification "Dawn massing in the east her melancholy army" ('dawn' is preparing to kill the soldiers with the cold weather) or "less deadly than the air that shudders black with snow" (nature is angry at the soldiers/mankind for destroying the landscape with trenches and black snow symbolises poison and evil, nature will kill the soldiers before the other soldiers). Storm on the island has a simile "spits like a tame cat turned savage" that suggests the weather is being used against the island's inhabitants by nature. SoTI also has "we are bombarded" & "space is a salvo" which are both examples of a military semantic field that suggests that nature is a war general and is on a mission to devastate the islanders and show them its true power. (Sorry this is so long, I thought I'd dump a few ideas down that you could use if this was the question 😅)

But this video proves how it is! Mr Salles is saying if you want you just revise one poem, revise “Checking Out Me History”, because you can find points of comparison with any of the other poems in the anthology.
